ahhh yes, Numberwang

PortAndStilton · 19/12/2008 17:31

Tangentially related to thread...

Compare and contrast DW Johns Simm and Barrowman reading Winnie the Witch for Cbeebies...

midlandsmumof4 · 20/12/2008 00:41

Ooohh, the guy from Survivors-he's gorgeous. I also think David Morrissey would be good. John Simm would be even better but as he played the Master I think he's out of the frame. Who would make a good female Doctor if it was ever allowed to happen?

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 20/12/2008 17:14

Someone mentioned Meera Syal somewhere, which I love as an idea. But I hate the idea of a female Doctor, so that short-circuits that.

MegBusset · 20/12/2008 17:37

Mmm, John Simm can read me a bedtime story any time!

Kay, written any fic recently?

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 20/12/2008 18:06

sadly not. Probably will again when I get some confidence back, but I've actually been writing real stuff instead of piggy-backing on other people's characters which can't be bad.

SciFiFan · 24/12/2008 13:06

So where is the countdown to tomorrows Christmas special???

Well I suppose I'll have to start it.....29 hours to go sssssqqqqqqquuuuuuuueeeeeeeee

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 24/12/2008 13:44

I just managed to sleep through High School Musical, and was woken up at the end by the sound of the TARDIS. For a moment I thought the film was much better than I had anticipated, but no, 'twas the trailer for tomorrow.

Is it too exciting? Maybe..

SciFiFan · 24/12/2008 16:52

Just over 25 hours!!!!!

RustyBear · 24/12/2008 17:41

I'm preparing for it with a DW classics-fest - DD just came back from her holiday job at Woolworths (closing on Saturday) and they had a load of DVDs & games without boxes going free - DD's got The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Visitation and The Talons of Weng-Chiang.

RustyBear · 24/12/2008 18:23

Watching The Talons of Weng-Chiang now - I'd forgotten Magnus Greel was being chased by the Time Agency - and he was from the 51st century! Wonder if it was Captain Jack....

I love it when little references like that turn up.

SciFiFan · 24/12/2008 19:04

23 hours.....I watched Journey's End last night and have to admit to a small sob when Wilf said he'd look at the stars each night and think of the Dr.

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 25/12/2008 20:58

Hmm, enjoyed it, but I was a bit 'ho hum' that David Morrisey's identity mystery was resolved so quickly. It was by far the more interesting storyline, even though Dervla Kirwan did a nice line in risque comments.

Is it just me that thinks the Cybermen are quite, I don't know... meh.. in the new series? Did they just chill me before because I was younger?

KatyMac · 25/12/2008 21:04

They were certainly different & not in a good way

Dervla was FAB & that dress!!!

Thought they could have strung the other DR along a bit longer

I worried about all the children.....seeing the Cybermen must have been traumatising & victorian London was not the place for counselling

RustyBear · 25/12/2008 21:07

I think the cybermen, like the Daleks were much more frightening in black and white...

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 25/12/2008 21:14

It's the flares. That and the collossal ineptitude of them. Having emotions removed should make them chilling and almost eerie, but all it does is make them a bit like stompy metal versions of John Major.

DaisyMooSteiner · 25/12/2008 21:28

DH and I were most disappointed that Dervla didn't say something along the lines of:

"These aren't just Cybermen. These are silver-plated, Christmas-special, Victorian Cybermen."

sockmonkey · 26/12/2008 07:31

Christmas isn't christmas without a Doctor Who special. I was hoping we'd get a sneek peek at the next special though.
Loved Dervla's dress. The Cyber-King was funky. Looked like proper victorian craftmanship.

Normally the cybermen have me at least a bit nervous, but that's usually because the music around them is incredibly dark and sinister- I found it to be a bit insipid really.

ellceeell · 26/12/2008 11:42

I enjoyed it, but found it very sad. I don't know if it is because Tennant is leaving so I'm almost counting down the episodes? Or if I hated a mother being killed? And I liked David Morrisey when he was all gung ho and confident but - it was almost as if he is too good an actor? When he was sad, he was so sad........

Aitch · 26/12/2008 11:50

'kin hell, did anyone watch dr who confidential? the cybermen were TERRIFYING in their first incarnation. like leigh bowery but without the humour.

i thought the dr who ep was okay... although did the equity card for jackson lake's son not come through in time or wot?

Aitch · 26/12/2008 11:51

agree about morrissey being sad, btw. he was absolutely desolate, that upset my dd more than anything else tbh.

midlandsmumof4 · 27/12/2008 01:28

Cybermen have never been one of my favourites. Always found them a bit naff, very obviously men dressed as robots. However, in this episode they were 'menacing' men dressed as robots-the stomping sound that heralded their approach was pretty good this time & the Cyber King transformer thingy looming over Victorian England was quite impressive. Not the best Christmas episode to date but not bad

UnquietDad · 27/12/2008 11:27

I got the impression that the Doctor had the whole Jackson Lake thing worked out in five minutes - it was pretty obvious, after all. Once he'd listened to the (single) heart and seen the fob-watch, that was pretty much it, and it was then an exercise in how long the revelation could be delayed for the audience!
