last week in 9pm slot bbc had 'criminal justice' - great, thoughtful drama. this week something so woeful i'm offended.
dh reckons it was made with sat tea time slot in mind - ie it's aimed at children. i think he's being kind. and they did just chop someone's head off.
script dire, acting shocking - i keep thinking i'm watching a sketch and waiting for the punchline.
shocking.

Hilarious. I am so upset that French and Saunders are not still going to do one of their piss-takes, this show was made for it. Loved the archaeologists just torching everything, and then just going off to the pub with one of the sword-wielding maniacs still in tow...

Do feel a bit sad for the fabulous Adrian Lester though.

NigellaTheOriginal · 09/07/2008 10:50

and i was so looking forward to it. pile of bollox

Fanella · 09/07/2008 10:55

Awwww no!

I've sky plussed it. Me and DH were really looking forward to it. I'm still going to watch it for the laugh though.

Jodee · 09/07/2008 11:02

oh good! Was annoyed with meself for missing most of it last night, caught last 10 mins of people swinging on ropes setting fire to relics, what a lot of baloney. Where's the likes of Russell T Davies when you need him.

Jux · 09/07/2008 11:06

Yes, it was complete and utter rubbish. The Times described it as "watchable bunk". I started laughing at it within about 5 minutes when the plot became clear. DD was glued to it but didn't take it seriously; she loved the line at the end from Dolly(?) about going to the pub. She and DH think the best line in it was the one they showed from next week's episode, about the "underpant situation".

We might watch it again if there's nothing else to do.

I missed all the trailers, so had no expectations, so rather enjoyed it in a don't-take-it-seriously sort of way. But it's all far too predictable to be for adults, really.

purlease · 09/07/2008 12:33

but you couldn't do a piss take of this - how can it be hammed up any more? loved the 'lets go to the pub' - back to real life

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 09/07/2008 12:48

I was watching after one glass of wine too many. But perhaps that's the best way with this drivvel. I was sooo looking forward to it. I think I'm now going to take up script writing, because even I can write better than that. And someone please decapitate the 'feisty' lead woman. I've never seen her in anything where she was any good, so why does she keep getting the parts?
It's Adrian Lester & the lovely Hugh Bonneville I feel sorry for. What a waste.

Love the thread title too.

UnquietDad · 09/07/2008 13:27

I fancy the curvy arse off "feisty maverick" Julie Graham, so I shall no doubt keep watching for that reason alone!

PuppyMonkey · 09/07/2008 13:33

Oh, I watched this. What joy. "In the name of Jehovah, can I please go to the pub now!"

Or maybe we should call the police and have an accident enuiry, inquests, statements etc first?

Sheer trash

OrmIrian · 09/07/2008 13:39

It was dire.

In fact I was so irritated I could hardly watch it.

As a (lapsed) archeaologist I have never seen such tosh in my life. The only moment it rang true was when the older chap said 'for the love of god let's go to the pub' or some such. And not a roll-up in sight And there were all so clean. And what was with the 'you let a layman help you on a dig?' in outraged tones. It's not a f*ing operating theatre.

UnquietDad · 09/07/2008 16:43

Amusing review/summary thing here

Gizmo · 09/07/2008 16:52

That review was brilliant UD. Quite made up for my disappointment at having missed this last night

JackieNo · 09/07/2008 18:05

Excellent review. We also commented on the way the priceless 13th century manuscripts were just stuck on a bookshelf, not in some darkened, air conditioned room, where you had to wear gloves to touch them.

KayHarker · 09/07/2008 18:19

That review was sheer class. I find myself sufficiently amused to not bother watching the episode myself.

Although, actually, it might be quite amusing.

Tillyboo · 09/07/2008 18:57

I was so looking forward to this and wasn't disappointed ! But not for the right reasons ..

It was hilarious ! The swinging sword fight was just pure class. It's such a shame as it promised so much. I love the concept so I'm hoping it'll improve.

I think perhaps it's meant to be slightly tongue in cheek in places, especially the older bloke professor who wanted to go down the pub. Some of his lines were really funny.

UnquietDad · 09/07/2008 19:02

kayH - you simply must. iPlayer it tonight. And then sit there thinking "for the love of God, please do not let these people anywhere near Doctor Who!"

JackieNo · 09/07/2008 19:31

UnquietDad - did you see Julie Whatserface, or 'Feisty Archaeologist' as I'm now thinking of her, reading the bedtime story on CBeebies? I thought of you (must get out more ).

JackieNo · 09/07/2008 19:32

AND - I really must stop misreading the title as 'Boneknickers' .

UnquietDad · 09/07/2008 20:25

jackie - ooh, I didn't!
My youngest has just got to the cusp of being too old for CBeebies. Now I know what I'm missing out on!

Yep, that's an hour of my life I will never get back............

TwoFir · 11/07/2008 11:39

Lapsed archaeologist here too Best line was Adrian Lester saying 'I'll just go and do some dendrochronology...' ha! I got stuck into the wine and waffled on about real archaeology for most of it. DH says I am not allowed to watch it any more!

JackieNo · 11/07/2008 12:17

So how do you say 'let's do dendrochronology on this', then? I wondered about it at the time. DH and I even discussed it, but couldn't come up with what you'd actually say. Although it certainly wasn't just 'do dendrochronology'.

PortBlacksandResident · 11/07/2008 12:19

That's very funny UQD. Supposed shockingness of beheading moment ruined for me by DH explaining to me how it wouldn't happen like that.

OrmIrian · 11/07/2008 12:22

twofir - yep, my DH got fed up with me too!

All I can think is that what with Lara Croft, Indie and this heap of sh*te I must have gone to the wrong university. It was never that exciting or dangerous when I was doing it.
