Can someone please explain River Song? What is it or he/she? I'm not getting it.

JackieNo · 19/07/2008 22:38

Here she is - from the episode in the library.

RustyBear · 19/07/2008 22:44

Of course if it was 10.2 she met,it would explain why she sacrificed herself, because she thought 10.1 was human & wouldn't be able to regenerate.
Don't really think it's likely though.

RustyBear · 19/07/2008 22:50

Who was it that was saying on the old thread that we won't have much to talk about if we start a new one? - 750 posts already....

Capital · 19/07/2008 22:58

Thank you. Bear with me, I'm watching the series as repeats bbc3, so am clearly missing important information.

KayHarker · 19/07/2008 23:19

yes, River does say 'and don't think you'll regenerate' in Forest of the Dead. An interesting idea.

(Don't think it's actually what happened, but it's an interesting story idea.)

Cappuccino · 20/07/2008 16:13

I wondered why she said that

why did she say that?

KayHarker · 20/07/2008 16:42

I think it was in the script primarily as another little layer to show that River did indeed know the Doctor in the future, because she knew about regeneration.

In terms of character motivation, I think she said it because she knew how reckless he could be, with the safety net of regeneration in the back of his mind. But that kind of leads onto exactly how regeneration works, which is a ticklish business when you include all the fairly convoluted canon about it.

TinkerBellesMum · 20/07/2008 17:59

The UNIT man said that The Doctor had been killed too fast to regenerate, so probably she knew if he was killed doing that he wouldn't have the time to regenerate.

Cappuccino · 20/07/2008 20:21

yes Kay I have read Dr Who geeks who reckon that the metacrisis is officially another regeneration down

Just found this seems The Doctor has found himself a practice between seasons!

KayHarker · 22/07/2008 13:42

Even if he is a regeneration down, it won't make the slightest bit of difference. If the show is still going strong when they reach the arbitrary regeneration limit, a magic button will be pressed and the fictional limit will disappear in a puff of smoke!

I think the 'too fast to regenerate' thing was a clever bit of writing on RTD's part. Firstly, it's speculation by a minor character, so there's nothing at all definite about it anyway. Secondly, we don't see the Doctor's face, so it's still possible he had actually just used up his regenerations.

My favourite explanation for his death in Turn Left is the suicidal thing - that just like the Master in LotTL chose not to regenerate, he chose not to regenerate.

TinkerBellesMum · 22/07/2008 14:26

I've read it speculated that as it was only used in one episode and it appeared to be Gallifrey council that decided it, that he may be able to keep regenerating because the council doesn't exist anymore.

Why would The "turn left" Doctor choose not to regenerate?

mankyscotslass · 22/07/2008 14:45

He had recently lost Rose...maybe life was not worth living? Plus the whole commiting genicide thing by killing all the baby spiders?

KayHarker · 22/07/2008 15:06

Yup - he was a really dangerous character in the Runaway Bride. It starts the instant he is cut off from Rose, and he bowls along in a melancholy fashion, having the odd romantic flashback, until he commits focused genocide on the (admittedly voraciously murderous) Racnoss babies, and would quite clearly have stayed in the underground lair to watch them all drown if Donna hadn't stopped him and got him out.

The last shot of the him in episode has him choked up at the mention of Rose's name. He was a big soppy emo throughout the episode, and the only thing missing was the black eyeliner. Even his hair was lacking the usual cheerful lift. So, I think it's completely reasonable to posit that, in a different time line, without a bolshy Donna to pull him away from the edge, he could have taken a darker turn.

God, I hate that story. Like Doctor Who does a depressing Christmas Eastenders special with extra-un-scary waggly legged spider. I felt suicidal afterwards, never mind the Doctor.

TinkerBellesMum · 22/07/2008 15:20

I'm sure I have that episode on my pc, I must get around to watching it!

Cappuccino · 22/07/2008 18:52

yes he did commit genocide there didn't he with the Racnoss

he didn't send himself off to a parallel universe because he was not safe to be left alone, did he?

oh no

KayHarker · 22/07/2008 21:19

The Doctor? Double standards? Nevar!

Cappuccino · 23/07/2008 12:12

oooh

our first Eccleston series is on its way from Lovefilm

I am dd1 will be delighted

KayHarker · 23/07/2008 13:25

Jolly good - we're doing a rewatch of the first series ourselves on Saturday nights.

mankyscotslass · 23/07/2008 13:37

We have them all on DVD, and are slowly watching them all again
DS(6) is a bit of a scaredey cat but is starting to have a bit of interest now, although refuses to watch any scarey ones, so we are having to trawl through them all to find suitable ones for him. He really does scare easily, so we are being careful.
Gives me a a good excuse to ogle though.

Cappuccino · 23/07/2008 14:26

I shall be transferring all affections to CE forthwith

ooh
