DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones, Gentleman Jack) and DI Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie, Game of Thrones) are back to investigate a murder in the Arctic.

Just about every major world power has its eye on Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago. Melting ice caps open up the possibility for resource extraction and trade routes, and Russia, China and the UK are all interested.

A diplomatic quagmire is created by the murder of a member of the British special forces, meaning Amy and Kirsten have to tread more carefully than ever before.

Dominic Mafham (The Clinic) will reprise his role as MI5 official Ian Downing.

Joining him this series will be Jeppe Beck Laursen (The Last Kingdom) as Svalbard police chief Henrick Becken and Naomi Yang (Under Salt Marsh) as microbiologist Shen Jia.

Tornike Gogrichiani (Drops of God) will round out the cast as a Russian Colonel and Eric Godon (In Bruges) as Mayor Korotayev.

Vigil returns on Sunday 30 August.

Typical. It clashes with Trigger Point plus I'm on holiday so will have to record them all.

moto748e · 20/08/2026 17:36

I haven't seen this. Is there an ongoing story-arc, or are they self-contained new plots? In other words, is it worth starting on S3? I CBA to watch two old series.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/08/2026 19:00

Course it does @tapdancingmum😂

nothing decent for 2w on itv or bbc at 9

@moto748e - short answer no

tho it explains their relationship so I am nice and read below to understand s3 😘

The two female leads, Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and Detective Inspector Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie), are romantic life partnerswho also share a close professional working relationship. about:blank 1]

Their dynamic evolves significantly throughout the course of the drama:

  • Series 1 (The Complicated History): They begin the show as ex-lovers who recently broke up on uncertain terms. Forced to work together on a tense submarine murder case—Amy trapped underwater and Kirsten on land—their unresolved history and lingering feelings are explored through flashbacks. By the end of the first season, they reconcile and decide to give their romantic relationship another chance.
  • Series 2 (Building a Family): Their bond deepens significantly as they move in together. They are openly in a committed relationship, co-parenting Amy’s stepdaughter Poppy, and navigating the upcoming arrival of a new baby, as Kirsten is pregnant. Professionally, they butt heads as they try to balance career ambitions with protecting one another.

backstory of poppy

Poppy Torrens (played by Orla Russell) is DCI Amy Silva’s stepdaughter, and her backstory is the root cause of Amy’s deep-seated trauma, anxiety, and severe claustrophobia.

Her history unfolds across the seasons through a mix of tragic flashbacks and custody battles:
The Tragic Accident
Years before the events of Series 1, Amy was in a serious long-term relationship with a widowed man named Iain Torrens. Iain’s first wife had died shortly after giving birth to Poppy, and Amy stepped in to help raise her as a surrogate mother.

The family's life was shattered when their car came off the road and careened into a deep loch. As the vehicle quickly submerged under water, Amy managed to escape but was left with an agonizing choice: save her unconscious fiancé, Iain, or save young Poppy. Amy chose to pull Poppy to safety, and Iain tragically drowned.

The Custody Battle
Following Iain's death, Amy was left deeply traumatized, plagued by guilt, and dependent on anti-depressants. Because Amy had no formal parental or legal rights over Poppy, she was entirely powerless to stop Poppy’s paternal grandparents (Morag and Gordon Torrens) from taking the little girl to live with them.

During Series 1, a major subplot reveals that Amy has been secretly fighting for joint custody behind the scenes, a dream she initially kept hidden from her partner Kirsten.

A New Family Dynamic
By the end of the first season, Amy survives her terrifying ordeal aboard the submarine and finally reconciles with Kirsten. Between Series 1 and Series 2, Amy and Kirsten successfully obtain full custody of Poppy.

In Series 2 and 3, Poppy lives permanently with them in their new home.

She is a central part of their blended family, adapting to life with two mums and preparing for the arrival of her new baby half-sibling.

  • Series 3 (Partners on the Move): As they head into the Arctic mystery, they face new high-stakes pressures that put both their professional careers and their central relationship to the test.
