ITV (https://www.hellomagazine.com/tags/itv/) has unveiled a first look at its gripping new serial killer drama, The Dark – and it looks seriously good.
Adapted from G.R. Halliday's debut novel, From the Shadows, the six-part series follows a high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase between Detective Inspector Monica Kennedy and a twisted killer in the Scottish Highlands.

If, like me, you're a fan of atmospheric, edge-of-your-seat thrillers like The Pembrokeshire Murders and The Fall, this one needs to be on your radar.

Billed as a "chilling serial killer drama," the series follows DI Monica Kennedy as she investigates the discovery of a body found on the coast of the Scottish Highlands.

The synopsis reads: "When the body of a young man is found eerily staged in the idyllic Scottish wilderness, detective Monica Kennedy fears this is just the beginning of a terrifying campaign that will strike the heart of a rural community. As paranoia rises, suspicions and secrets are forced into the light, and the locals start to realise that there is a serial killer hidden amongst them.

With her experience of dealing with the darkest of humanity Monica Kennedy quickly becomes entangled in a heightened game of cat and mouse with a cunning killer.

Only she can stop this monster before he claims any more victims.

But when her own history creeps up on her, she begins to lose trust in her own judgement.

Will it be her own actions that are the biggest risk to herself and her family?"

The first look photos also show distraught mother Bethany Morgan (Helen Baxendale) holding a gun, as Monica appears on her doorstep once again with a case linked to her missing son. Viewers also get a disturbing glimpse of the masked killer.

Who stars in The Dark?
Laura Donnelly (Outlander) leads the cast as Monica Kennedy, alongside Mark Rowley (The Last Kingdom) as DC Connor Crawford and Helen Baxendale (Cold Feet) as Bethany Morgan.

6 parts and other books hopefully will be made into series’s

I had a look on Kindle at the novel it is based on, but could not get into it (G R Halliday,From The Shadows).

Hopefully the 6 part series which starts tonight will be better at capturing my interest!

Do sleep well friends 😧

Ooh ! I don't think I like this! Mind you I'm not keen on the drugged, naked body trope, be it male or female. I am a self confessed bungee, but I think I'll hang fire with this one.

Maybe I should have watched I jack wright instead

NewAgeNewMe · 12/07/2026 22:19

Started watching this. Had to abandon near the end but will finish it tomorrow. It’s not on next Sunday and then away for 10 days so I may download to watch while away. Depends how I feel after tomorrow’s episode.
Bit creepy.

There was a similar, naked male body murder, left in praying position, in Taggart, donkeys years ago and this instantly took me back. I bloody loved Taggart!

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/07/2026 22:38

I’m not too sure on this. And that’s unlike me

I will watch tomorrow but hasn’t gripped me

IAmKerplunk · 12/07/2026 22:52

I gave up on it - may try it again one day.

Now on ep1 of I, Jack and enjoying it already

Yes Jack was good. I did a thread on it last year

I watched and was confused.
the family of dead boy said they had no dog so I assumed boy was maybe kept in the cages by his parents and made to eat dog food?
but I also assumed chap at the end was sane boy (in flashback) as similar stark religious room (though I now realise bed/door in different position) and wondered why he had a dog plus how the killer got him out that window!

I obviously didn’t pay enough attention! Hopefully it’s twice a week not just Sundays as it’s not gripping enough for that.
