ITV (https://www.hellomagazine.com/tags/itv/) has unveiled a first look at its gripping new serial killer drama, The Dark – and it looks seriously good.
Adapted from G.R. Halliday's debut novel, From the Shadows, the six-part series follows a high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase between Detective Inspector Monica Kennedy and a twisted killer in the Scottish Highlands.

If, like me, you're a fan of atmospheric, edge-of-your-seat thrillers like The Pembrokeshire Murders and The Fall, this one needs to be on your radar.

Billed as a "chilling serial killer drama," the series follows DI Monica Kennedy as she investigates the discovery of a body found on the coast of the Scottish Highlands.

The synopsis reads: "When the body of a young man is found eerily staged in the idyllic Scottish wilderness, detective Monica Kennedy fears this is just the beginning of a terrifying campaign that will strike the heart of a rural community. As paranoia rises, suspicions and secrets are forced into the light, and the locals start to realise that there is a serial killer hidden amongst them.

With her experience of dealing with the darkest of humanity Monica Kennedy quickly becomes entangled in a heightened game of cat and mouse with a cunning killer.

Only she can stop this monster before he claims any more victims.

But when her own history creeps up on her, she begins to lose trust in her own judgement.

Will it be her own actions that are the biggest risk to herself and her family?"

The first look photos also show distraught mother Bethany Morgan (Helen Baxendale) holding a gun, as Monica appears on her doorstep once again with a case linked to her missing son. Viewers also get a disturbing glimpse of the masked killer.

Who stars in The Dark?
Laura Donnelly (Outlander) leads the cast as Monica Kennedy, alongside Mark Rowley (The Last Kingdom) as DC Connor Crawford and Helen Baxendale (Cold Feet) as Bethany Morgan.

6 parts and other books hopefully will be made into series’s

Maybe not his dad then I thought he was. But dunno now. I think the social worker is suss.

Their profile I think describe the perp as being insignificant and almost weedy. But would it not take super human strength to haul your self in through windows and then cart life less males across moorland.

But poisoning is a woman's crime I think? So is it Philly?

And why after murdering two lads they've suddenly become crap at murder? You'd think they'd get more expert but the last two (3?) they've tried have been massive failures

Plus the missing brother now returned saying oh, I didn't mean to worry you all. I didn't realise you'd think I was dead in a ditch/at the bottom of a loch. What a dense thing to say. Plus what the heck is he hiding? He knows something

TheBewleySisters · 22/07/2026 12:46

@NewAgeNewMe me too! I miss Taggart.

NewAgeNewMe · 22/07/2026 12:49

I know!!!! Loved Taggart!

Manifesto · 22/07/2026 21:42

I loathe this rogue cop shtick. She’s now the car on her own with the possible perpetrator. Ridiculous

TheFifthTellytubby · 23/07/2026 10:09

Anyone else having to press pause and walk over to the screen to read all the text messages and labels etc.? I don't mind them as a plot device but I do wish they would zoom in on them a bit more!🤓

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/07/2026 11:22

Yes so annoying when they want you to read a text - make it bigger ffs

i am suspecting headmaster man and before that -other social worker who is not Michael.

but it’s very unclear what’s going on and I can’t actually understand some of what is said! Hopefully only 2 more to go.

E5 tonight

Gave it a go for a couple of episodes. Didn't like it. As I say, I bailed after 2 episodes. Couldn't be arsed to waste any more time on something I was not enjoying.... A combination of bad/wooden acting, too hard to fathom what's going on/too much going on, and it's a bit boring.

I also struggled with Crow Girl and have bailed after 2 episodes there too.... Similar reasons, except the acting is a bit better.

Praying The Rapture is better. That starts tonight I think...

.

So are we thinking that the murders are personal? Or just a coincidence a body has turned up out side the cops window?

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/07/2026 22:38

Honestly I haven’t a clue

There is a lot going on in this series which they don’t really seem to explain like the cult. I feel sorry for Lucy her mother just seems to forget we exists most of the time.
