I agree, how did it get greenlighted for him to go to his mum's when Cleo was obviously so hostile to the idea that she didn't keep him for more than two days!

As South says, Avani was under age when Joel took that video.

I can see why they want Joel back, but a lot of 'plot reasons' are going on!

Southeastdweller · 18/07/2026 11:12

Just caught up on the last two episodes.

Denise was annoying me in the Thursday episode but at least the writers have shown consistency with her character because she’s always had a grating, pain in the arse side to her, and she did apologise in the following episode.

I agree with an earlier comment that Cleo is too glam to convince as an ex-partner of Ross’s.

I wish Wadey would bin off Mo because she’s not in the slightest bit funny and adds nothing to the show.

I get Vicky’s anger but threatening a child with violence if he steps out of line again? Seems out of character.

I don’t mind Mo really. She blends in and good for a laugh occasionally. She’s stuck it out for years.
She might be cringy with Zac though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/07/2026 11:43

Cleo might;ve had a complete make-over after she split with Ross .
Spending money and time on her hair and make-up coupled with a "Yeah look what you're missing Ross"
Or she might always have been groomed and glam? Some of the residents of the Square are always very well dressed ( cannot think of any at the moment as most of them are overdone ) In the past maybe Chantelle ? Or Angie ?
She's going to feature in the next few weeks (while we have Joel)
Zack will lend a muscly shoulder for Vicki to cry on.
Ross will be betrayed and glide back to his ex wife (because this is Eastenders )
Joel will think "Mum and Dad back together . This is what I wanted , I am a misunderstood young lad" and behave like an angel .
Until the next time .

BitLippie · 18/07/2026 12:10

I’ve just caught up, too.

I was Team Denise when she was giving Sheila a good dressing down. We just don’t need Gray back. Let’s move on.

I really cannot stand Vicki & Ross. Especially drippy Ross.

I don’t want a return of the Joel storyline. I know the popular opinion is that the boy who plays Joel is a great actor (and I don’t want to be mean to a kid) but I don’t actually find him all that great.

And if they ‘rehabilitate’ Joel all nice and neatly I’ll be really pissed off. He didn’t just make a bit of a teenage gaff - he groomed and filmed an underage girl and battered his stepmother unconscious! He has a long way to go to prove he has changed and he needs to be far away from the Square and in local authority care if his parents can’t have him, not roaming around the woman and girl he abused.

I sound really grumpy, sorry! 😆

I quite like the Mark/Lauren/Max/Ravi/Priya and Penny/Vinnie/Gina/Harry storylines rumbling along.

They need to find Zac a new love interest pronto. Nobody is buying this mooning around after Vicky.

Shellingbynight · 18/07/2026 12:23

I know what you mean about Joel, @BitLippie

They brought back Bobby after his crimes, but it was years later so him being a reformed character worked fine. Although I don't think Joel is reformed, other than on the surface.

Bringing him back so fast seems a bit 'let's get on with the storyline while you all still remember him'. As 70s says, Vicki will no doubt be tempted by Zack again, and Joel will find out their history and it will re-confirm all his manosphere views - women are slappers and men like his dad are weak. I think that is probably where it's going.

(I've never found Mo funny, I don't know why she was brought back.)

Southeastdweller · 18/07/2026 12:28

Joel also sexually assaulted a woman, which Ross and Vicky knew about. Not an expert on these things, but i think it’s unlikely someone who has done that and all the other crimes he’s committed can be rehabilitated in less than six months. Not that fantasyland is beyond the scope of EE writers but it just wouldn’t make good drama.

Why was Ross and Joel living in Australia? Was that ever discussed? Did he go there for work ?
Ross is such a vanilla type of man I’m surprised he can find anyone to stay with him. He isn’t bad looking I guess , but hardly any personality and didn’t handle Joel that well at first.
Vicky paid that girl off from the train .. she seems to have forgotten that. She needs a better paid job too. As an accountant she should be able to find work.
She said they are skint.

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2026 13:47

Joel will definitely find out about Vicky and Zac! Or someone will tell him.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/07/2026 14:07

Tommy and Joel both had the floppy curtain hair when they were friends.
Then Tommy had his cut , looked 100% better , his temper improved once he was away from Joel.

Joel comes back with a severre crew cut , is it the symbolism of Sampson loses his strength without his hair or a bad prison haircut (or bad case of headlice )..

Australia fitted in with Spencer being resurrected when Alfie had to vanish for a few weeks . Vikki and Spencer were together till she went off with his best mate .
And history repeats itself .

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2026 14:11

Ross was Spencer’s friend , I had forgotten that bit.
Alfie came back from seeing Spencer and didn’t really mention him at all did he! ( it was so Shaun Ritchie could go on tour really !)

Eastie77Returns · 18/07/2026 14:17

Ross paid off the victim in Australia and Vicky paid off the woman he assaulted on the tube. so neither has covered themselves in glory. Cleo is obviously a hands off mum. None of this is to excuse Joel’s horrific behaviour but the adults in his life are seriously lacking. I don’t understand why Cleo even took him back. She could have just refused and told the youth offenders team that with her small stepchild in her house, Joel presents a safeguarding risk. If Ross then also refused Social Services would have been obligated to find him somewhere to stay. But now for plot reasons he will be bouncing around Peacock Palace (I’m surprised Linda is permitting this).

I didn’t mind Vicky threatening him. She was warning Joel for his own good as Mark will make mincemeat out of him if he lays a finger on her again.

Eastie77Returns · 18/07/2026 14:23

@the80sweregreat I do think Ross is good looking but agree he is extremely dull. He’s been on the square for a while now and there still doesn’t seem to be anything about him, the character has no depth and not evolved into someone viewers feel invested in. It’s hard to believe he would have the gumption to go and live in Australia.

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2026 14:23

I suppose that E laine sees it as extra revenue and with Ross around that nobody will be under threat.
Most people would say no , but being EE there isn’t many places he could go unless they get the authorities involved to have him removed.
His mum should have said no at first I agree.
Safeguarding is a big enough reason there from the off.

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2026 14:24

Ross hasn’t much going for him. Spencer must have been bad for Vicky to stray!
I don’t remember him that much , but he seemed ok I think? Maybe she just got bored!

From what I recall, Spencer was completely gormless. She upgraded with Ross, which says it all!

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2026 14:30

Yeah, Spencer was a bit gormless wasn’t he. I liked Nanna moon though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/07/2026 14:54

Alex Walkinshaw was ex The Bill (as are many of Eastenders) as Sgt Smith "Smithy" and Holby (I don;t watch it but he was a Staff Nurse)
So a Soap "Big Name"
Maybe after Patsy Kensit's ill fated appearances as Emma they didn't want a big name to be too big ?
Ok it worked with Barbara Windsor but she was an exception. Maybe Colin Salmon too.

They take a chance bringing a name in in case it doesn't work , so maybe Ross was destined to be "A Local Builder" with his own van? And if his character evolves then great , If not he can go into the background and not be missed .
Or killed .

murasaki · 18/07/2026 15:13

Hang on , did someone say Ross was good looking? I think he looks like a confused hamster most of the time.

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2026 15:20

I don’t think that Ross is too bad tbh! I’ve definitely seen worse looking men walking around town.
He isn’t very dynamic, but maybe Vicky was taken in by his line dancing abilities!

Alucard55 · 18/07/2026 16:19

The Joel actor plays it so well even I was feeling sympathy for him. Neither his mum or dad wants him. I don't mind Vicki threatening him though he may be a child but he left her for dead and filmed it. I remember being quite shocked at how graphic that scene was.

Shellingbynight · 18/07/2026 16:49

Ross is so dull and ill defined I feel like he already IS a background character, despite being at the forefront of several storylines. He stands there doing not much while Vicki shrieks and Joel runs rings round him.

He does look like a confused hamster😂Vicki obviously likes 'em gormless!

I agree. Ross stands there like a lemon, letting his ex wife zip off without Joel, being completely ineffectual with Joel, no wonder Joel behaves the way he does.

the80sweregreat · 20/07/2026 15:53

Lots of outside activity today on strangely empty roads , all filmed on a Sunday?..
I did laugh at the stand in pole dancer. Bit of humour never goes amiss.
Lauren, where does she find the energy? Two young children, working , running a home and now a steamy affair with muscles. 🙄

I can’t believe that people would bother , but there you go.

Leftrightleft · 20/07/2026 18:27

What is Ross thinking? Is this the day after the last episode? If so he spent the night at the b&b and then the next morning he went straight to the school to get Joel in to 6th form? Absolutely ridiculous, there's no way anyone would think that's the best thing to do
