I feel that a lot of partners struggle with a change of looks , especially with hair. He wasn’t prepared for it and you can’t fake a supportive face when you’re shocked whoever you are!

BitLippie · 16/07/2026 13:22

I think Diane P is a great actress, but I agree that this storyline isn’t particularly well written.

I also feel like we’ve seen Denise so many times in so many dire situations - kidnapped by Chelsea’s evil pastor dad, terrorised by her other violent ex…when she had no money and was eating out of bins…when she was drinking too much…when she murdered Ken…when she was sectioned.

Sometimes you need to give a character a bit of a rest from these big, dark storylines or it loses impact.

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2026 14:19

They all go through it though don’t they !
Mark was appalling today , fancy dragging Lauren away from her own children ( not that I saw Jimmy , but wasn’t really concentrating )
The Beale kitchen certainly looked a bit different today !

Shellingbynight · 16/07/2026 14:29

@Alucard55 I’m just really surprised you don’t think Di Parish is a good actress as she’s usually thought as one of the best in EastEnders. But I doubt anyone will give it to you in the neck for that!

I agree Denise has been through the mill many times. Personally I didn't like some of her earlier storylines particularly the one with Kevin, I hated that whole time for Denise.

That’s funny because I think Kevin is the only one of her many partners she had real chemistry with. They’ve paired her with some very unlikely men. Lucas was the best looking but obviously unsuitable! Her relationship with Jack is the least convincing of all. He is dreadful.

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2026 15:28

May be a bit triggering ( sorry )
I’ve no idea at all, but does the chemo medication that they give to people change their personality? It is very strong medication, factor in worry and stress and isolation , it would be enough to make anyone grouchy and act out of character. I know that Dee has always been feisty and outspoken though at times.
I can imagine it has a lot of side effects and she may also be going through the menopause too ?
At 57 ( like a lot of women do ) I struggled. Let alone having cancer and a huge family with their ongoing problems as well!
I saw a photo online of the Vic with flowers outside for Zoe. It’s sad they didn’t just send her to Lynne permanently, but too late now!

Might be an AI generated pic by a bored fan @the80sweregreat ?

The plural of anecdote is not data, but a good work friend of mine became much more outspoken post chemo for breast and lymph node treatment. But I do think that was mostly down to a serious brush with death, and having no shits to give afterwards, she was in her 40s at the time, and has ploughed her own furrow since with much success.

murasaki · 16/07/2026 15:36

But i do remember her mum coming over from abroad when chemo started, and taking control of her kitchen, akd cooking her childhood foods, and her hating it, and me having to convince her that it was her mum's way of showing love, to feed her, that was all she could do and to just try a bite. It seemed to help. So I get Denise not liking her house the way she liked it.

I did say she could bring it to me though as I adore Persian food...

Shellingbynight · 16/07/2026 15:37

Easties I just couldn't stand Phil Daniels in the Kevin role (usually I like him but not in that). Lucas was a great actor although a terrible person😆I agree Jack&Jack has no chemistry with Denise.

80s my friend who had similar treatment to Denise didn't change personality. Denise seems pretty much the same as usual to me - straight talking, plus pissed off and distressed at what she's having to go through.

Alucard55 · 16/07/2026 15:54

@Eastie77Returns agree Yolanda. The cat bum mouth does it for me.

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2026 15:59

I’ve always liked Denise. Lucas was so good looking , but a horrible character. She has been through it over the years! Worst cancer story was Ian pretending that Lucy had it in order to marry Mel. They wouidnt get away with that now.

BitLippie · 16/07/2026 16:03

See, I love Yolande!

When you see the actress who plays her talking, she is SO different from the character and you realise what a great actress she is. She’s portraying a certain type of older, God-fearing, ‘proper’ Caribbean lady so well!

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2026 16:07

I think it’s fair to say we all have characters we either love or hate! Mark is currently annoying me a bit.
He is probably the sort that once she does sleep with him , he’ll move on !

Alucard55 · 16/07/2026 16:09

@Shellingbynight @BitLippie I agree the character has been through a lot and has some really heavy storylines. I feel she goes between wandering about staring into space going "oh I need to get Raymond to school" and being quite dismissive and scornful to those around here. I also think she's quite hypocritical. Has she forgotten the whole Keanu/Nish thing.

I

Alucard55 · 16/07/2026 16:12

I wonder if the storylines are so emotionally heavy and traumatic now that they just don't hit the same way. When people are getting murdered every other week it all sorts of blends in.

Alucard55 · 16/07/2026 16:14

@the80sweregreat agree Mark. He's got 1 more facial expression than Jasmine.

Shellingbynight · 16/07/2026 16:15

I love Yolande too!

80s I agree I find Mark very annoying. I agree he doesn't really care about her, and they don't have any chemistry. Still, she has no chemistry with Peter either!

@Alucard55 Everyone has forgotten Keanu, even Shaz😆

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2026 16:16

The writers have researched Dee’s story a bit I think.
Of course they can’t do it completely realistically, but I think that they have looked up a few things and tried to show how much it affects your life and family.

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2026 16:17

Lauren had more chemistry with Zack.
No, Sharon has forgotten Ken , they all have.

murasaki · 16/07/2026 16:19

Jack's face at her hair was the most expressive piece of acting I've seen him do. I almost cried for her.

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2026 16:24

Yeah, Jack and Jack did do well there. No warning and he couldn’t hide how he felt.
I can imagine it’s awful.
The teens are going to gang up on Joel. I do feel sorry for Avani as she had an abortion because of him
Wouldn’t his probation officer suggest something else for him ? Not sure what , but must be somewhere he could go instead ?

murasaki · 16/07/2026 16:30

Shoot me now, but I did think Denise without the hair wrap looked like a character Eddie Murphy played in Coming to America's barber shop scenes.

But I squashed it, and her distress was convincing and moving.

Yes, there's a distinct absence of a probation officer here re Joel.

Southeastdweller · 16/07/2026 16:31

Denise has always been a misery guts type character, pompous and dull on the whole. She / Diane is beautiful looking, but in real life Denise wouldn’t attract as many men as she has done (but I know it’s a soap convention that most characters have to have a lot of romantic relationships).

the80sweregreat · 16/07/2026 16:37

However they did her hair scene, it did look real!
I’ve known a few women with alopecia and they can buy some really good wigs that you don’t even notice isn’t their real hair. ( I’m not good at spotting things like that though, I didn’t have any idea with one lady that it wasn’t her real hair)
