I had an ex exactly like him.
The problem is they don’t really get how annoying they are but also it’s the inauthenticity. It’s impossible to actually get any sense of what matters to them truly.
You do just end up shutting them down because normal conversations end with excuses and cliched platitudes.
She’s being really rude but still none of it actually hurts him. He’s just a bit confused.
He’s not a bad bloke - just not really understanding about how other people work.

My exh was a bit like that. Thought he was funny but didn’t realise that his humour and jokes rarely landed. It was hard to watch. You could tell him till you were blue in the face but he never ‘got it’

S1 in the UK was sn entirely different sort of series. It aired as a documentary and the couples didn't meet each other.

I’m going to try and go back and watch - did you see up to S5! they were legally married? That’s just batshit

I think Joel is a bad bloke, horrible

Do you? I think he is socially awkward but not nasty. Why do you think he is bad?

RobynRB · 07/04/2026 22:03

Yeah but see... then they realised that putting them altogether in flats and meeting for dinner was a positive because they could help each other negotiate married life.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The way he went really hard when she questioned the creepy mother speech

When I compare him to the likes of Harrison or Jack from previous series, or even Tyson from this year, Joel doesn’t even come close to being a bad bloke.

Ophir · 07/04/2026 22:09

He is though. Hiding behind the FUN

Yeah I’m with you.

He’s a bit socially unaware and weird and his mother is also a weirdo, but I’m not seeing anything inherently ‘bad’ about him.

He doesn’t seem the abusive type, nor aggressive. He’s just a bit weird and a bit much.

This reminds me of another issue that kept being dragged up over and over on another series, but I can't remember what it was now...

Me too! What was it?

RobynRB · 07/04/2026 22:14

The drumming video is a bit childish but hardly anything to get offended by.

Juliette is giving vibes that she’s going to be far worse than Joel

And she right it’s just all performance. Playing drums either dildos could be for a couple of reasons ( thinking it’s silly, or edgy or bizarrely) but none of them fit well with a guy who sleeps with his teddy.
And neither of those things fit with someone who wants the all conventions of being married surely?

I don’t know about Joel (obviously) but it wasn’t a performance or an act with my exh. He just genuinely behaved like that and also wanted the convention of being married. He just didn’t behave how the majority of people did but there was nothing malicious there. It was very tiring though and I hated being in public with him

Me too! What was it?

It was the Ashley & Grace issues that were repeated soooo many times, with both having different takes on:

(1) him asking her to wear a dress when they were going to the theatre (she didn’t know where they were going) and

(2) he “offered” to pay for her nails to be done.

Both stories… on repeat!

Eggybreadwithnuts · 07/04/2026 23:11

❓️QUESTION❓️
DANNY ... Do you think he lied and DID say that to Gia????

I'm a YES

Oh god yes, the nails.

Juliette doesn’t like him because she knows that people including her friends think he’s a twat

Empress13 · 07/04/2026 23:19

Dan was hoping her father wouldn’t like him so he’d have an excuse to run from batshit Bec

I thought Steph and Tyson were cute in that episode. I'm rooting for them.

Yes this! The minute her mates told her what a knob they thought he was she turned into a megabitch & clearly cares more about what they think of him than she does. Before that she was being all kooky & “crazy” & willing to see the good in him. Yes he’s weird, awkward & prob is a walking “ick” but he doesn’t seem to have a bad bone in his body & didn’t deserve the wrath she gave him. She’s just acting out how embarrassed & affronted she is that she gave him a chance & was even liking him - to almost prove now to her friends that she’s completely off him. Sad! And unfair on him actually.

Italiangreyhound · 08/04/2026 00:17

I think Danny has handled the whole Gia comment badly. Instead of insisting he didn't say it, I think he should have said he doesn't remember anything, he was pissed, BUT No Gia is 100 percent not his type.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 08/04/2026 00:39

Gia thinks every man wants her though, so she is bound to say it.
