Hooray!

This is back for another series, starting Thursday.

I just googled very quickly and they set off from Sicily and end the race in northern Mongolia - sounds interesting.

I don't know anything else about it at this point, but thought that we should have a thread ready and waiting.

the cousins are very pretty, surprised no one else has commented this.

Adore them 😍. So sweet. Love all of the contestants, but I watch for the scenery and Scilly was lovely.

Just caught up..how did the broother/sister duo work out £ per day at the start, when they dont know how long it will take them ??

So the first team to arrive in Kefalonia is Harrison and Katie - brother and sister with 84% of their money left.

All the others are at best 8 hours behind with minutes between them.

Margo and Mark have 80% - in laws
Andrew and Molly 83% - father and daughter
Kosh and Jo 85% - school friends
Puja and Roshni 83% - cousins

Edited

The 8 hours head start they have may not be of much use.
They arrived during the night so should leave during the night when there is possibly not much transport operating. That happened in a previous series - the lead was wasted as they couldn’t move forward.

“You speak very good English”
”I’m Australian”
😂

Maraudingmarauders · 03/04/2026 22:51

I don’t understand why they got themselves stuck in super expensive Alberobello. For €120 they could have got a late taxi to the coast and cheaper accommodation in one of the cities, or small towns on the way!

BoxingHare · 03/04/2026 22:56

This seems a lot of budget to have spent so early on!

DrAmanitaPhalloides · 03/04/2026 23:05

Never seen Tyler on any thing before but he was fab on the podcast, and am glad Scott Mill wasn't doing it as he can be a bit much. But Tyler was fab.

itsalltoplayfor · 03/04/2026 23:11

They're getting through the budget pretty fast but maybe it gets cheaper the further east they go. It's a good idea to work early on in the trip.
The cousins don't seem to be commanding so much attention but seem nice.
Not sure I'm totally charmed by the Scouse lads but they will learn a lot and might tone down a bit.
I predict at least one of those stupid maps will get lost.
'Mount Edna' LOL - I think Katie might have some good comedy lines.

WonderfulSmith · 03/04/2026 23:17

I do think though that the budget looks bad so far because this is a more expensive leg of the journey. Everything will be tourist prices but there will be less of that as they go on.

bendmeoverbackwards · 04/04/2026 00:12

Really enjoyed the first episode and the route looks fantastic.

Sorry but I do find Margo annoying and nothing to do with her age or sex (or her confidence). Just her general manner is a bit grating.

Dh and dd2 nearly applied last year but TBH they haven’t got an interesting back story.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/04/2026 06:29

saw The Detour
quite funny
they pointed out how bizarre that they start the race running off in different directions before they sit down and look at a map which did seem a bit OTT
Alfie was very quiet on the show, so far not managed to get a word in, even though is he meant to cohost?

Isn't it just! How dare an older woman be confident and assertive! 💪

Yes, if she was meek and mild she would get criticised for that too. Older women can't win.

It’s nothing to do with her age or sex. I’d find her equally annoying if she was a young man.

I probably like the two cousins most at the moment, but that will no doubt change as the series goes on.

I'm an older woman and my own family find me annoying.😅 We've only seen one episode so hopefully she'll grow on you.

When we watched RATW last year where they started in China I was so knocked out by the scenery that, well, DH and I are off to China ourselves in a little over a week! We will be there nearly three weeks. Which reminds me I must remember to set a series link to record the rest of the series....

I'm just back from a work trip to China- it's so much easier to travel round than when I used to live there, they have really embraced digital technology - paying on alipay/WeChat pay, trains so much faster, stations seamless, creepy delivery robots in the hotels. Hope you have an amazing trip.

Oh I like them all so far! I actually really like Margo and the chap-I think it’s a lovely tribute to her sister from both of them.

Margo is my favourite too. She’s been through hell and her and the guy are helping each other through their pain. Hope they win they deserve it

IglesiasPiggl · 05/04/2026 00:16

I like Margo and Mark too. The "modesty cocoon" was my favourite moment of episode 1 😁

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/04/2026 08:16

I just Googled 'modesty cocoon' to see if this was an actual thing but the only hits were references to RATW. How bizarre. He must have had it specially made - was it Margo or himself he didn't trust i wonder?

I have one of those, it's a sheet lining for a sleeping bag.

BoxingHare · 05/04/2026 08:18

I thought it was just a sleeping bag liner, but admit didn't view that closely!!!

Fair enough. It looked sort of transparent and gauzy to me. Maybe he was joking and just liked to have his own sheet with him.

Yes, it's a bit thinner than a normal sleeping bag liner, maybe he made it himself!
It must be awkward travelling and sleeping next to someone who isn't your spouse/sibling whatever.

Recklessismymiddlename · 05/04/2026 08:51

When I was backpacking (30+) years ago I had a double sheet, that I had sewn up as a liner thing, in case places I stayed in, weren’t particularly clean. I used it a few times. Useful for not knowing where you were going to end up staying.

I have done a fair bit of travelling sleeping next to strangers so it wouldn't bother me particularly. I used to have a sleeping bag liner but I made it myself so I don't know what a standard one is like.
