New six part drama on BBC One with episodes one and two on Monday and Tuesday and following weeks3&4 and 5&6

Starring Siobhán Cullen and Paapa Essiedu, Babies is a gripping, tender and urgent love story that explores the resilience of a couple navigating the heartbreak of pregnancy loss.

Starring Siobhán Cullen (Bodkin) and Paapa Essiedu (Black Mirror), Babies is a gripping, tender and urgent love story that explores the resilience of a couple navigating the heartbreak of pregnancy loss.

The series follows Lisa (Cullen) and Stephen (Essiedu), a couple in their 30s whose hope is tested as they endure multiple miscarriages.

While confronting unimaginable grief, their bond shines through with humour, warmth and unwavering love.

The series also stars Charlotte Riley and Jack Bannon as Amanda and Dave, a new couple navigating their own challenges and testing their compatibility.

Their complex relationship, set against Lisa and Stephen’s ongoing pregnancy journey, begins to expose cracks in Stephen and Dave’s long-standing friendship.

Golaszewski says: “Paapa, Siobhán, Jack and Charlotte are all incredible actors.

Their warmth, detail and deep humanity are essential to telling this crucial story that’s never told.”
Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, says: “Babies has everything we love about Golaszewski’s work – a tender, authentic, emotional and human look at couples navigating a time in their lives that is rarely covered on television.

It’s no surprise that this very special series has attracted such an outstanding cast, and it’s been an honour to see them bring Stefan’s scripts to life.”

He also wrote him and her (watching that now) mum (loved it) and marriage (sure I’ve seen but downloaded it)

That Golaszewski is the fella behind the fantastic Mum series! Hope this is equally as good.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/03/2026 08:16

Yes he did - I said that in op

mum- him and her (watching that now) and marriage

Not my usual genre but I think I’ll give it a go!

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/03/2026 16:12

I’m watching for Paapa

Just seen a clip of it and felt nose tingle

think will be an Emotional watch

I’m not sure about this. The writers last project - Marriage - was so so and the male lead actor in this does nothing for me. All episodes are on iPlayer but I was going to wait to read opinions on here before possibly watching.

E1 is tonight

Giving it go

I've gone through recurrent pregnancy loss so interested to see what they do with it as it's not something that really features in dramas,

not keen on the male leads so far

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/03/2026 21:01

Sorry for your losses @Scorpion84 💐

Oh. This is sad. Bless her

I watched earlier. A difficult thing to watch. Seemed very natural to me. Usually I watch early and then binge but I can’t handle another episode straight away

purpleme12 · 30/03/2026 22:02

Thought it was ridiculous

Everything about the restaurant scenes were just so ridiculous

The relationship between Dave and his girlfriend is just ridiculous. Dave and his girlfriend are ridiculous individually

And while I don't dislike the two main characters, I'm not invested in the story

daffodilandtulip · 30/03/2026 22:05

I like how much in love they were throughout it. It forces some couples apart.
Very emotional - also have experience.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/03/2026 22:15

The Dave and gf just showed her as rich bitch who doesn’t seem to care or wan to be with dave

and Dave pretending he loves the life sh leads

wonder if she will get preg before lisa

OP posts:
KylieKangaroo · 30/03/2026 23:16

I think the GF will get pregnant before the couple do. It's so sad though. I did love Mum so will be hoping for a happy ending with this one.

HazelBite · 31/03/2026 05:51

I found it quite moving from the first couple and thought the acting really the losses was very convincing.
As for the other couple, the male was very odd, and so was she to some extent.
Be interested to see how it progresses

lazymum99 · 31/03/2026 08:22

I got the feeling that Dave’s girlfriend (Amanda?) was using him just to get pregnant at first. But then why try and socialise with his friends and stuff.
No doubt she will get pregnant before Lisa. But maybe I got the wrong end of the stick and she will have an abortion

I thought the same because as soon as they had sex she'd no interest in talking with him. Anyone know what the mass was? It looked like an anniversary mass but for who? Unclear atm what the point of them is

Main couple I thought were really good and portray it so well. It is such a private intimate grief, no one around them knows what they're going through which I think was captured very well.

This is the same writer who also wrote ‘ him and her ‘ and ‘mum’ ( which was sublime ) and Marriage which wasn’t as good but I still watched it all!
The actual characters are just similar ones with different storylines, the writer definitely sticks to similar themes.
The two main leads are very good though , it’s what isn’t said that’s more important than what is said.
Amanda is another Pauline ( from ‘ Mum’ ) and Dave is another Kelly.

I totally agree with the characters being very similar to those in Mum. Dave has the same mannerisms and style of speech as Kelly and Amanda is the same cold and judgemental character as Pauline. It just shows how much imput the director has.
I think the relationship between the main couple is portrayed beautifully but fear it might all be a bit too slow to keep my interest.

the80sweregreat · 31/03/2026 20:07

It is slow, but it has a lot to say I think. Some of the characters I want to shake :(

KylieKangaroo · 31/03/2026 20:51

Agree there are similarities between the characters, I can forgive the writer as I think he writes "real life" so perfectly, like the bit where the guy was saying do I need a jacket?😅

JasmineTea11 · 31/03/2026 21:40

Impressed by this. Very thoughtful and realistic portrayal of pregnancy loss.
Dave is weird and so is his girlfriend!

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/03/2026 21:55

Dave’s son is a rude spoilt kid

equally too soon to induce him to new gf
