https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-15628823/Nadiya-Hussain-attack-BBC-cancelled-difficult-conversations.html

I think this woman needs her to realise her star has fallen like a lot of minor celebs. She has had a good run and everything has did was tired. New cookery blood should be allowed a chance.

I thinks it's undignified to start accusing her erstwhile employers of racism.

Nadiya Hussain launches another blistering attack on the BBC

Nadiya Hussain has launched another blistering attack on the BBC after previously claiming she'd been axed due to racism in the 'broken' TV industry.

If that’s Rick steins dog I’m sure I remember it killing a rabbit on an episode.

He had a good go at the cameraman when they were in a boat too iirc Nothing was safe around him apart from Rick Stein and even he got fair few nips too.

powershowerforanhour · 10/03/2026 12:36

She was naive if she thought it would be all about the recipes- image and brand is everything. I'm sure the same happens to every telly cook "More orgasmic please, Nigella" "Do that again Jamie but say bish bash bosh as you're doing it." She's not wrong to get frustrated or voice that frustration if the direction is racist and sexist though. "Ok we need you to look Muslim but not too Muslim. Wear bright colours, not black, we don't want to scare people. We're going for pretty Muslim, not sexy but cute girl next door pretty. Sweet. Unthreatening. Smile, there's a love".

She probably knows that speaking up- being a "difficult woman"- isn't going to help her career but probably thought fuck it, they're binning me off anyway so I'll just say it instead of smiling and fawning for scraps.

I’ve really enjoyed her programmes, and I’ve made several of her dishes, but TV is dependent on the next set of fresh presenters arriving on a regular basis. Yes, there are some chefs like Marcus Wareing who have longevity, and probably some of that comes from being a white bloke, but he has had Michelin stars, so he has earned his hat.

With the proliferation of internet chefs, I tend to look to other sources for inspiration now. Last week’s cooking was dominated by the fabulous Sobia Bashir, who I found on Threads. (If you are looking for tasty food with easily-sourced ingredients, I really recommend her). I suspect that is the future of cookery programming, rather than the next new BBC series.

I hope Nadiya embraces the change. I don’t really trust the DM to report any of this with impartiality, though. They must have been FROTHING at the opportunity to bash the BBC and chuck some implied criticism at a brown-skinned woman in the same article. If they could have mentioned her house price and how it was all Keir Starmer’s fault, they would have won the middle class right wing bingo prize.

She didn't take their money, she earned a salary.

Is it only BAME people who you think 'take money' or white people too?

More nonsense. I take money from the public purse. Its who pays my salary, so I term it as taking the tax payers money. My colleagues all term it the same, when we happen to be talking about it. Love hate relationship with the employer and the GBP at large

Isometimeswonder · 10/03/2026 08:11

I agree. And why the comparisons with middle age white men?
I like Nadiya, I found her a breath of fresh air.

Quite.

Also, as pp have touched on, both side of the argument can be simultaneously true: Nadiya can arguably have 'had a good run' AND can also have experienced the negative impacts of sexism and racism on her career.

She has been very successful, but yes, stars do wane. That, however, does NOT mean that she hasn't been on the receiving end of sexist and racist behaviour at the BBC.

Why are you pretending that is the same thing? On a thread where people are saying Nadiya Hussain was only given a job because she is brown and Muslim and should be grateful for what she gets and keep her mouth shut and not complain?

It's not just the Mail. The Independent. The Star. The Mirror. Evening Standard. Metro.

She's even got an interview in the Radio Times in which she bashes the BBC again like she did last year (I suspect this is where the others have picked it up from).

It's a pure coincidence that all this coverage has happened just a week or so after the launch of her latest cookbook....

She should be bloody grateful she was given what she was for the decade she had it!

We all know why the BBC gave it to her,

I mean people keep mentioning Marcus as having been around for ages and possibly past his sell by date but he's white so he has stuck around

Monica is way way past her sell by date, but she is not a white male. I find her incredibly boring, the two of them together quite frankly is a sedative. And now with that awful Matt whoever as well, he is dull as dishwater.

But the point is, people trying to make out someone like him is just around because he's a white male, there are lots of people who are stil hanging around when their USP is run out and she is another one. She came to prominence because of her work with Michel Roux (who is much better than Marcus) and her expertise is without doubt but she's a bit of a one trick pony too.

I think it’s possibly a bit of everything.

I like Nadia and follow her on insta but I think she’s probably naturally come to the end of her TV career and ten years is a huge achievement tha she should be proud of. But she’s not “owed” a tv show, there comes across a little smidgeon of entitlement of “how dare you?”

but I also do believe that there’s probably huge truth in what she’s saying. She probably was dropped because of focusing on Muslim cooking, but that could also be because she’s focusing on a smaller audience. I honestly don’t know.

I have bought a couple of her books but to be honest never made any of the recipes. But I do like her.

Same. I like her but also assumed she must be pretty minted by now anyway. She’s done well for winning a baking show.

I think I might write a book of Christian Cooking…..it’ll be pretty much the same as Muslim Cooking but won’t scare the flag shaggers.

That term is so insulting and peurile.

Theres nothing wrong in saying someone should be grateful, she got lucky, good luck to her, she has done well and she deserved the luck but yes, grateful I would say. I say that about myself and other people who have done well, what sthe issue

And why did she get the job - she had a USP, everyone on the telly does, otherwise they're not picked. Her history, heritage, her presentation, her identity will have been part of that. You must be really naive if you dont understand that. People on the telly are products for the audience's consumption, its not a benign instrument.

What part of her personality makes you think she's subjugated?

Because she doesn't do what white people expect her to do?

So you've gone from saying I made up those things to saying you agree with those things?

Why aren't you telling white celebrity chefs that they should be grateful, that they got lucky etc?

Ondira · 10/03/2026 12:57

Playing the race card when she’s been given far, far more opportunities than she actually deserves or merits is just appalling. If anything, she’s a diversity hire

Good grief. Aside from the appalling 'diversity hire' comment, the moment someone types, or says, 'playing the race card,' it speaks volumes.

'Playing the race card' is one of those phrases that is an immediate red flag for me.

Yes, because the posters saying 'we all know why she got the job' and 'she should take off her head scarf' and 'that she should be grateful for what she got' are not Islamophobic at all, eh?

No need. It only took a short review of the page on which my post appeared to support my hypothesis.

"Jamie Oliver is a home cook..."

Jamie Oliver worked as a sous chef at the River Cafe, an Italian restaurant in London. When Jamie was working there it was awarded a Michelin star (which it still has to this day).

So, I think it's likely that he learnt how to be a bit more than a "home cook".

In contrast to that though, he did say that one of his inspirations was somebody without any formal training at all - Keith Floyd.

You may remember him from his various cooking shows in the 1980s and 1990s.

Some of his shows are still on BBC iplayer, such as his 1987 series 'Floyd on France'

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03j5hgr/floyd-on-france-1-provence

Yes I’ve addressed my mistake there. I maintain that his cooking style is certainly that of the home cook, and his skill level is well below that of the top tier chefs that I’ve mentioned. None of the restaurants that he has opened himself have been of any quality, but then he hasn’t given them any personal attention so what can you expect. I think he is good at what he does - presenting, and producing reliable, family-friendly recipes.

I think that’s the problem with Naydia - good presenter but the recipes really let her down.
