ITV The Lady release date, cast and what to expect from Sarah Ferguson drama

The Lady is a four-part limited series delving into the rise and fall of the former Duchess of York’s royal aide.

On sun and mon for 2weeks at 9pm

Sarah Ferguson (https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/sarah-ferguson)’s former dresser Jane Andrews worked for the royal for nine years.

Three years after she was let go, she murdered her boyfriend Thomas Cressman.

At the heart of ITV’s The Lady is Jane Andrews, the working-class woman from Grimsby who got a chance of a lifetime when she was hired to work as Sarah Ferguson’s royal dresser before her life spiralled out of control.

She is brought to life by actress Mia McKenna-Bruce who has starred in How To Have Sex, The Fence, Get Even and Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials on Netflix.

McKenna-Bruce is joined by actor Ed Speleers - famed for his roles as Stephen Bonnet in Outlander, Jimmy Kent in Downton Abbey and Rhys Montrose in You on Netflix - who plays Jane’s boyfriend and victim Thomas Cressman.

Meanwhile, Sarah Ferguson is portrayed by actress Natalie Dormer, remembered for playing Margaery Tyrell in HBO’s Game of Thrones (https://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/aemon-targaryen-knight-seven-kingdoms-36703680) and Anne Boleyn in The Tudors on Channel 4 (https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/channel-4).

What to expect from The Lady on ITV
Described as a “working-class girl from Grimsby”, Jane Andrews’ life changed forever when she answered an advertisement in the magazine The Lady.

However, no one expected that following her time working for the royals that Jane would go on to murder her boyfriend Thomas Cressman, hitting him with a cricket (https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/cricket/) bat before stabbing him in the chest.

You mean terminated employment for Jane?

For Jane! Yes.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/02/2026 08:03

Watched the first two episodes last night.

It’s the only time I have seen a drama that shows the disclaimer not just at the start of every episode but before every commercial break. They must be properly worried about being sued.

I vividly remember a documentary in 2006 which included strangely mesmerising interviews with her socialite friend Basia, who stood by her after her arrest. The blonde friend is clearly based on her but doesn’t capture her at all.

Thanks for linking the Bindel article. It’s good to have that perspective. Makes one wonder all kinds of things about Jane Andrews’ life history, but yes, she is entitled to her privacy. I enjoyed this while feeling a bit grubby for watching.

purpleme12 · 24/02/2026 08:06

It just showed the disclaimer at the start for me

This was ITVX.
(and I should have said after every commercial break of course)

Oh, her first husband was 20 years older?! That makes sense that he looks old enough to be her father! That was a huge age gap.

The drama is really depicting Sarah as quite volatile and unstable - I wonder how much of this reflects the truth?

Fergie's character is almost like a pantomime villain - a bit overplayed. It was horrible the way she terminated employment for Sarah though - that would have devastated anyone.

The sudden sacking would be upsetting but you can understand why they did it- as with companies where employees have access to sensitive information and could potentially do damage if they gave them a notice period, in that scenario trust would be everything and the last thing you want is a potentially upset employee having access to your home. And that’s even without taking into account that she was a particularly volatile sort of person.

lazymum99 · 24/02/2026 08:49

I would imagine she was paid for her notice period rather than working it. Don’t want a disgruntled employee hanging around the ‘royals’!

A disgruntled employee is a risk. Brutal way to terminate employment though. I felt sorry for the way this happened to her.

I'm reminded of what Paul Burrell did when he finished employment working for Lady Diana. He took lots of Diana's items for 'safe keeping'. Terrible.

I do wonder at the notice. Or lack of it

plus not a day off in 2years - no statuary 28 days off ?

It may have been more that Jane just didn’t take any. She was portrayed as quite obsessed with her work and seemed to view herself as Sarah’s friend rather than employee so I can imagine her not taking much time off through choice. She didn’t seem to have much else going on in her life. Having said that if she hadn’t actually got a leave allocation I don’t think she would have said so casually she was taking off a couple of days next week so she did have a leave allocation but may not have taken it?

I wonder if the fact she trashed her boyfriend’s house was a factor. They would have got to hear about that. Firstly it indicates how unstable she was and secondly he was a wealthy well connected man and an employee from the wrong side of the tracks pissing off one of their own wouldn’t have gone down well.

I would guess Sarah is volatile and unstable.

Wonder if Fergie is watching this and read somewhere about lawyers standing in place in case needed

She’ll be keeping her head down I imagine but suing ITV might be a tempting prospect for the ever broke Sarah.

Newgirls · 24/02/2026 17:06

It’s very well done with the great cast and period styling. I sympathise with Jane and dislike her at the same time. Living in that world would mess with you

tho make you wonder if the sudden holiday happens and that’s when sarah seemed to go off her and find a new bestie

I think the actress playing Jane is very good, but don't think I'd want to meet Jane in real life , her sharp, snappy way of talking would put me off, it sounds very dismissive .

Yes, I agree Fergie may sue , she's always running out of money!.

Regardless of what's true and what isn't, it's very watchable .

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/02/2026 20:44

Yes I’m enjoying an didn’t think I would

but regulars of blondes broadcasts know I like most things

it has to be really really crap for me to hate 😂😂

Love the throwback to the 80s with the brilliant music but atrocious hair dos and clothes.

Surprised they gave an interview, then a job to a northerner so clearly inexperienced despite being able to distinguish a sailor collar from a victorian one.

Feel sorry for the victim's family having this thrust into the spotlight again but as far as dramas go it seems well made and sensitively done. So far.

Wow I very vaguely remember this case but it slipped from my memory long ago, until I saw this series was coming on.

Just seen episode one on catch up. Very gritty opening screens with Jane and her boyfriend in the car, and also the fish factory. Artistic licence I guess.

About to start episode two.

The early scene in the car was absolutely unnecessary and jarred a bit, I'm no prude but whoever thought to include a BJ complete with mouth wiping in this Confused. Kind of mixed messages for the actual serious content of the drama.

Newgirls · 25/02/2026 08:20

I didn’t like the car scene but it made total sense. She thought he was her ticket out of there and we could all see she was being used and had low self esteem. It helped make us feel sorry for her. She then continues to choose men for what they can do for her, rather than love

Gonefishingithink · 25/02/2026 08:30

The boyfriend was supposed to be abusive sexually and controlling but this isn’t depicted at all.

Clawdy · 25/02/2026 08:49

No, he just seemed upset and troubled. Wonder if they're afraid of him suing them if they portrayed him as he was?

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/02/2026 08:58

Yes the wipe of mouth was a bit ott

thi equally as @Newgirls said it made sense. She hoped his band would go somewhere and she was totally used

bj and then fuck off I’m seeing my friends

That was just a defence she came up with to excuse her murdering him. Evidence from previous girlfriends were that he was gentle and kind. He just didn’t want to marry her and had enough of her but she wouldn’t let go.

Julie Bindel believes her and says there is evidence she was telling the truth.
