ITV The Lady release date, cast and what to expect from Sarah Ferguson drama

The Lady is a four-part limited series delving into the rise and fall of the former Duchess of York’s royal aide.

On sun and mon for 2weeks at 9pm

Sarah Ferguson (https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/sarah-ferguson)’s former dresser Jane Andrews worked for the royal for nine years.

Three years after she was let go, she murdered her boyfriend Thomas Cressman.

At the heart of ITV’s The Lady is Jane Andrews, the working-class woman from Grimsby who got a chance of a lifetime when she was hired to work as Sarah Ferguson’s royal dresser before her life spiralled out of control.

She is brought to life by actress Mia McKenna-Bruce who has starred in How To Have Sex, The Fence, Get Even and Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials on Netflix.

McKenna-Bruce is joined by actor Ed Speleers - famed for his roles as Stephen Bonnet in Outlander, Jimmy Kent in Downton Abbey and Rhys Montrose in You on Netflix - who plays Jane’s boyfriend and victim Thomas Cressman.

Meanwhile, Sarah Ferguson is portrayed by actress Natalie Dormer, remembered for playing Margaery Tyrell in HBO’s Game of Thrones (https://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/aemon-targaryen-knight-seven-kingdoms-36703680) and Anne Boleyn in The Tudors on Channel 4 (https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/channel-4).

What to expect from The Lady on ITV
Described as a “working-class girl from Grimsby”, Jane Andrews’ life changed forever when she answered an advertisement in the magazine The Lady.

However, no one expected that following her time working for the royals that Jane would go on to murder her boyfriend Thomas Cressman, hitting him with a cricket (https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/cricket/) bat before stabbing him in the chest.

It was in 2000. I remember it but think the media were a bit vague about it . Perhaps we'll hear more about it in this true life drama .

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/02/2026 18:02

Oh wow over 25yrs ago

FYI

In anticipation of ITV’s new drama series ‘The Lady’ said to portray the ‘true crime story’ of a ‘rags to riches’ Royal aide of Sarah Ferguson, former Duchess of York, Harriet Wistrich, CEO of Centre for Women’s Justice, who represented Jane Andrews at her appeal in 2003, makes the following comment:

“Jane Andrews was convicted of the murder of Tom Cressman over 25 years ago. She long ago served her prison sentence and has attempted to move on, but due to her past employment with the now discredited section of the Royal family, she continues to be the subject of media interest, intensified each time when yet another one-sided TV programme is made about her case. Jane has not contributed to ‘The Lady’ despite it purportedly being about her life, nor has she contributed to any of the previous multiple TV documentaries made about her. The public are thus presented with a one-sided view that fails to explore why a vulnerable woman in her circumstances may have been driven to kill.

“Like many other women I have represented and we have campaigned for, the prosecution case and media coverage can distort the underlying story, relying on sexist tropes such as “fatal attraction killer” and “gold hunter”. Yet we know in many such cases there is an underlying and sometimes hidden history of abuse and control, as there was in the case of Sally Challen. In fact, the precedent created in the case of Sally Challen and our greater understanding of coercive control and its impact on those with underlying mental health vulnerabilities could well assist Jane Andrews in a fresh appeal, should she wish now to explore one.”

Thanks @IwantToRetire. Interesting that she hasn’t contributed as often real life doco dramas do collaborate with the real life characters

like Mr Bates and dirty business and I fought the law

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/02/2026 20:37

IwantToRetire · 21/02/2026 21:49

I only came across this press release by chance.

And dont know enough or remember enough about the court case, but do know that the Centre for Women's Justice has had some major wins for women in various court cases.

But on the other hand I dont think ITV will pay much notice to their statement, but maybe the former Prince arrest will.

Its so sad.

I am sure there have been occassion where those caught up in criminal events want and are part of tv series etc..

But if they are not, how to the programme makers feel it is okay to go ahead.

IwantToRetire · 21/02/2026 21:52

Now I have seen that the victim's family also didn't want it to go ahead.

And the lead actress not wanting to promote it.

The Lady is described as a "partly fictionalised" drama charting the downfall of the former royal dresser, which has garnered controversy, including the refusal of lead actress Natalie Dormer to promote the show.

Confused
Blondeshavemorefun · 21/02/2026 22:03

So Natalie who ‘played’ sarah didn’t promote the show

why on earth did she accept the job /role then ?

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/02/2026 22:03

So Natalie who ‘played’ sarah didn’t promote the show

why on earth did she accept the job /role then ?

Because she didn’t know about Fergie’s links to Epstein until a few months ago.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/02/2026 22:51

berlinbaby2025 · 21/02/2026 22:07

Because she didn’t know about Fergie’s links to Epstein until a few months ago.

Oh so you mean it’s a recent refusal from her

tho unless sarah knew and some are still vague on the details - do she cover it up her husbands actions

OP posts:
berlinbaby2025 · 22/02/2026 07:38

All four episodes are now on ITVX.

berlinbaby2025 · 21/02/2026 22:07

Because she didn’t know about Fergie’s links to Epstein until a few months ago.

She could have read Entitled

its silly to try and eradicate Fergie from all trace

this is the story of Jane Andrews. Fergie is a
character but this story doesn’t paint her in a particular ly flattering light. She comes across as a dickhead

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/02/2026 14:44

I may watch this at 8 as clashes with Lord of the flies and rich house poor house

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/02/2026 14:44

So yes starts tonight at 9pm
