ITV The Lady release date, cast and what to expect from Sarah Ferguson drama

The Lady is a four-part limited series delving into the rise and fall of the former Duchess of York’s royal aide.

On sun and mon for 2weeks at 9pm

Sarah Ferguson (https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/sarah-ferguson)’s former dresser Jane Andrews worked for the royal for nine years.

Three years after she was let go, she murdered her boyfriend Thomas Cressman.

At the heart of ITV’s The Lady is Jane Andrews, the working-class woman from Grimsby who got a chance of a lifetime when she was hired to work as Sarah Ferguson’s royal dresser before her life spiralled out of control.

She is brought to life by actress Mia McKenna-Bruce who has starred in How To Have Sex, The Fence, Get Even and Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials on Netflix.

McKenna-Bruce is joined by actor Ed Speleers - famed for his roles as Stephen Bonnet in Outlander, Jimmy Kent in Downton Abbey and Rhys Montrose in You on Netflix - who plays Jane’s boyfriend and victim Thomas Cressman.

Meanwhile, Sarah Ferguson is portrayed by actress Natalie Dormer, remembered for playing Margaery Tyrell in HBO’s Game of Thrones (https://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/aemon-targaryen-knight-seven-kingdoms-36703680) and Anne Boleyn in The Tudors on Channel 4 (https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/channel-4).

What to expect from The Lady on ITV
Described as a “working-class girl from Grimsby”, Jane Andrews’ life changed forever when she answered an advertisement in the magazine The Lady.

However, no one expected that following her time working for the royals that Jane would go on to murder her boyfriend Thomas Cressman, hitting him with a cricket (https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/cricket/) bat before stabbing him in the chest.

I remember this story and was looking forward to watching it but my heart sank when I realised it's on bloody STV/ITV player. Constantly fucking buffers. It's a joke in our house that you know when England are going to score cos the effing thing always buffers and you miss it.

Genuine question - WHY has stv player been so shite for years now?

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/02/2026 21:22

Where are you @Back2TheDrawingBoard as I watched earlier on ITVX and was fine

Watched all episodes this morning. Found it very easy to watch.
I vaguely remember it happening back in 2000.
Great characterisation and acting, liked the various timeframes.
What timing though in view of recent events surrounding Sarah Ferguson and Andrew MW.

Back2TheDrawingBoard · 22/02/2026 21:40

@Blondeshavemorefun Edinburgh. I've moved house from one bit of the city to another and changed wifi providers over the years and still the same!

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/02/2026 21:40

Oh weird. I thought maybe abroad

daffodilandtulip · 22/02/2026 21:49

That’s funny as I live in the midlands but use a Scotland postcode to access stv because itv breaks every five minutes, and stv works perfectly for me.

daffodilandtulip · 22/02/2026 21:51

Was Sarah Ferguson known for being moody and emotional and well, not very royal family?

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/02/2026 22:19

The press at the time, were pretty unkind to her, bearing in mind this was before all the recent stuff came out.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/02/2026 23:59

Thought more People would have watched this

I watched ep 1 and will watch more. I do vaguely remember the Jane Andrews murder case. Duchess of York Ferguson is shown as an unpleasant woman. Some time last year she was a guest panellist on Loose Women and she was a disaster. I'm not a fan. Did you guess 🙄

JaneJeffer · 23/02/2026 00:32

I watched it 👋

If anyone is moody it’s Jane except for when she’s with Fergie! Seems she has always been like that going by her stabbing her brother with a pencil (although he should have known better than to get in the way of a woman watching a royal wedding 😃)

I feel sorry for her husband who seems like a gentleman. The only reason she married him was because Fergie told her she should but they’re not suited at all.

I enjoyed the clothes shopping and all the bonkers 80’s outfits.

BTW what was wrong with her shoes? Footman is a little bitch.

Not courts /heels

tho walking in heels all day would kill me

I watched the 4 eps and what I would say is the actress who plays Jane looks far too young. The real Jane was 34 when on trial but the actress looks about 21 maximum, could Even pass for younger.

Just looked it up and the actress is 28 now, but she would have been 26 or so when filmed. But she’s one of those people who looks young for their age and I just didn’t find her believable.

berlinbaby2025 · 23/02/2026 07:27

I agree @minimoo7 I just can’t take her seriously as Jane.

Natalie Dormer is a bit more believable but too pretty for Sarah.

Meredusoleil · 23/02/2026 07:29

I've only watched the first episode and can't get over how petite and young she looks, but at the same time, all I can see is the school girl from Get Even! She is such a talented actress though. Saw her in Seven Dials more recently.

OvernightBloats · 23/02/2026 07:39

Yes, I also think the actress looks too young to be playing Jane Andrews. Her acting is fine but she has been miscast.

The first husband that Jane marries in the drama looks significantly older. Old enough to be her father so that is jarring as well.

So was Jane Andrews responsible for some of the outfits Fergie wore? Some of them were really bad!

SomewhereInMyHeart · 23/02/2026 10:56

Agree re the actress. I thought she looked far too young in Seven Dials!

Enjoyed the clips of the Royal Wedding with Just Can’t Get Enough playing, even though that song not released until later in the year!

Housewife2010 · 23/02/2026 12:01

I watched it last night and enjoyed it. It's been heavily advertised for what seems like weeks by ITV. I followed the case at the time & remembered that she bought a pack of M&S thongs whilst on the run!

JaneJeffer · 23/02/2026 12:01

I can’t remember her story and I haven’t looked it up because I want to watch this first but she went to prison in 2001 so the age she is now would be more or less right wouldn’t it?

friendlycat · 23/02/2026 12:59

I thought it was quite watchable even though the timing is amazing.
I remember the situation well.

JaneJeffer · 23/02/2026 13:02

Funnily after I posted about the footman I read an article about Andrew being so annoying that a footman had punched him and given him a black eye. The queen said he wasn’t to be reprimanded as Andrew had probably deserved it!
