But surely other shows have had a largely replaced cast and carried on. Taggart continued long after Jim Taggart died. We will just have to wait and see. If they do a big enough gap then Angela and or May could have qualified as nurses and happen to be characters in the reboot series.....

StillSpartacus · 07/03/2026 18:18

You could have a hospital and community (district nurses) series moving on from 1971, but even that would need a new cast. I must admit I’m personally quite keen on the idea a prequel.

WildCritic · 07/03/2026 19:50

Another idea would be to go for a kind of spin off, The Royal came as a spin off to Heartbeat and in the first few series had a number of Heartbeat characters turning up in the hospital. May be a young Dr Tim Turner gets a job at a District hospital? We know Joyce Highland likes working in a hospital setting. Even the religious sisters could be part of the hospital chapaincy team. I am not saying many of the current cast would be in it but there is some way for a few to transfer.

StillSpartacus · 07/03/2026 19:58

That could work Wild. With one caveat that it doesn’t turn into what the Turners did next.

I actually think that the 'end' has come at just the right time for the child actors. The girls must be heading to secondary school and even Teddy is about 9. They can now retire, as many child actors do without having to be written out or horror of horrors go off for a bit and return with a new face!!!

Zippidydoodah · 07/03/2026 20:23

I love this on a Sunday night, so comforting. As a child it was Heartbeat. I hope they don’t axe it 😭

That could work as long as it doesn't revolve around doctor turner and his simpering wife.

I think it just needs to stop now. No prequel and definitely no film.

I will enjoy the prequel I think, but agree the film is unnecessary and will probably be utter shite.

BridgertonToBe · 08/03/2026 13:27

I also don’t have high hopes for the film. The Christmas specials are usually rubbish. They’re deluded if they think lots of people will go to the cinema to see it.

I think that the prequal could be interesting as long as they don't drag it out.

The Radio Times article this week says Blitz period prequel is only 3 episodes long. I think it might be broadcast over the Christmas period at the end of this year but not actually on Christmas or Boxing day.

WeepingAngelInTheTardis · 08/03/2026 14:58

I’m so sad it’s the last episode, i have watched it religiously over the past 15 years! I think the film will be good, doubt it will be in cinema though.

The argument that Stephtn McGann gave for the film when interviewed on the One Show is that big name stars won't sign up for a cameo role in an ordinary episode and rarely for a Christmas special but a film might persuade someone to get on board the project.Who knows. It might be a film that goes straight to TV.

He has a point they want some of the old characters to come back like chummy & Jenny.

StillSpartacus · 08/03/2026 15:32

But why does it need big name characters? It’s an established series that is at its best when it focuses on the stories of the women of the east end and the characters of the midwives caring for them. Having big names makes a film less, not more, appealing to me.

StillSpartacus · 08/03/2026 15:36

I hope they aren’t thinking of Emerald Fennel as the big name draw. Patsy was an enjoyable character, but not particularly authentic.

But they would need to be recast and I’m not sure how that would go down with the audience. The older nuns possibly as they are further removed from their younger selves.

Heidi Thomas said ‘it will look amazing on the big sceeen’ or words to that effect, which implies it will be in cinemas.

I think you may be mixing up the prequel set during the blitz and the film set in 1972. For the prequel they will have the characters of Sisters Monica Joan, Julienne and Evangelina but played by younger actors . I did wonder if Jenny Agatter might play older Sister J looking back reminiscing. But otherwise yes new cast. It is for the film set in 1972 there has been some talk of attracting big names in cameo roles.

LIZS · 08/03/2026 17:29

Ah, see what you mean now! Wonder if any old faces may return tonight?

VivaDixie · 08/03/2026 18:34

I'm obviously in the minority but I love it and will be so sad when they stop making series/specials.

I was born in 1973 in a small village so was looking forward to it coming into my era and reminiscing about old health centres, community nursing and community life etc. It doesn't have to centre around midwives, it could easily move with the times and show a shift in healthcare through the 70s and 80s, particularly with AIDS.

For the poster who is starting at the beginning - again i am in the minority but I have loved all of the series'. It's a personal choice - you might like it - you might not.

I'm also a bit 'meh' about the WWII series, I enjoy seeing how all the characters evolve. We have always said over the years that Trixie would never have stayed in Poplar that long - well now she is moving to the Lady Emily which seems like a natural progression for her.

Looking forward to the film though.
