I was totally caught out in the next big storm after 1987 (89?) for actually bunking off to shag my then boyfriend and was totally busted by my Dad who’d left work early arrived at my school to ensure I got home safely in my car…after it was clear my friends were trying to cover up for me, it did not end well 😂

The 1987 storm was epic. first non-snow day school was cancelled. I recall the newscaster (maybe John Humphries?) broadcasting from what looked like a cupboard telling everyone to stay at home. Even my Dad didn’t go into the office and that was unheard of. James Vereker delivering Michael fish’s immortal line was inspired.

Absolutely loved the reference to the new-fangled hobnob biscuits (rip digestives) and bournvita (a dark cocoa malted flavoured hot chocolate). And plonker.

The Marillion soundtrack at the end was spot on.

My granny used to like Bournvita - like mixing Bournville chocolate with Horlicks.... I wasn't a fan.

I could tell something bad was going to happen once Tony rang Maud to give the 10 minute notice warning. Sad it went in this direction though.

MrsJamin · 05/06/2026 14:40

I adore that Lizzie had these mugs - I grew up with this teaset! What a fabulous joyous job it must be gathering such classic 80s items for props.

sorry had an image issue - here it is

@MrsJamin I clocked the mugs too! I had two separate, unrelated aunts that both had that set. Very nostalgic.

GertrudeOHara · 05/06/2026 15:01

Loved that episode. Gutted to have to wait but I DO HOPE they don’t torture us the same way with season 3. I’ll suck it up for this, and watch the next six in October or whatever but JFC don’t mess with it again. The excuse is fucking football! No one is going to forget to watch Rivals for football!

I have a feeling you can still get Bournvita - I’ll Google.

I also thought Cameron was good at the silent acting. Poor Cameron. Trying to hang on to RCB is like trying to hold water in your cupped hands.

VetMedMum · 05/06/2026 15:40

Declan and Maud had my childhood TV! Phillips in a brown case with eight buttons top right.

Stowickthevast · 05/06/2026 16:03

Just caught up - amazing episode, but quite a deviation from the books.

I thought Caitlin and Archie were very sweet. Monica & Lizzie heartbreaking, and loved the storm. I was at boarding school when it happened and remember going out to smoke fags in the holes left by the fallen trees the next day. I still have a contact sheet of the photos I took that day - far less raunchy than Archie's!

Marillon for Freddie & Lizzie was perfect.

Treetreetreetree · 05/06/2026 16:04

I’m really not liking this season!

BestIsWest · 05/06/2026 16:51

I had the bowls to go with those mugs and you can get Bournevita. I have some here.

Miranda65 · 05/06/2026 12:24

Alex Hassell is very good-looking, and he captures RCB perfectly, so I've forgiven him for not being blind!

Absolutely this!
My God poor MonMon I was not expecting that. They will have to go a bit off book now surely.
Loved all of that, superb acting all round.
So well done and so Jilly.

anxietyispartofme · 05/06/2026 17:38

I think every woman could relate to Cameron in this ep - having a gut feeling something is going on but no real proof. And then later being proved right.

BunnyMcDougall · 05/06/2026 18:13

I thought Archie was gay?

TheLemonOtter · 05/06/2026 18:18

TV Archie goes both ways- think he slept woth both Makepiece siblings last series!

TheLemonOtter · 05/06/2026 18:19

Book Archie washes his hair with soap so it won't look shiny, so I was quite glad it wasn't shiny today! But Caitlin is not at all like my mental image of her.

Blossombunnyy · 05/06/2026 18:50

Ran in from work tonight and pressed play before I even had my coat off.

Now trying to process this last episode but won't say anything as people might still have to watch. Except absolutely sublime acting from each and every member of the cast 💐

P.S still fuming 😤 we have to wait until Autumn for the other episodes 😤

Really? I think it’s just fab. It has a Dallas/Dynasty feel to it all.

anxietyispartofme · 05/06/2026 19:37

I feel this season is a little slow but that may be because it’s a weekly slow release. I don’t like that we’ll have to wait months for the next part.

Notonthestairs · 05/06/2026 19:42

Haven’t watched it yet - waiting til after I’ve dropped off teenagers so I can watch without interruption!

Read somewhere (totally unsubstantiated) that the next tranche of episodes will come out late October and run til early December. 😬 But that would mean watching the hunt ball (if they keep in) at the right time of the year which I quite like.

It’s been such a splash of summer on our screens so far.

jay55 · 05/06/2026 20:05

I was not prepared for that.
Glorious performances all round.
They are all absolute masters of the unsaid.

binliner · 05/06/2026 20:46

So Declan didn’t sleep with Cameron.

I knew Monica was going to die when Tony said “it’s too dangerous” & the fact that she was finally breaking free. How sad, a much darker episode but great acting.

anxietyispartofme · 05/06/2026 20:47

Am I the only one who finds Taggie a bit annoying? We get it, she’s perfect with kids, a great cook, loves animals etc. She needs to do something to spice up her character a bit, she seems so weak, dull and boring compared to Cameron and other female characters (Lizzie, Monica, even Caitlin).

And even though they’ve aged her up, she and Rupert seem so wrong that together. The RCB actor is older than Aidan Turner, who plays her dad Declan. I know there’s supposed to be an age gap but I’m not feeling any chemistry between them at all.

Yes, interesting they’ve changed it from the book. Maybe they thought it would be too weird for them to sleep together in the show before she ends up with Patrick in the end.

binliner · 05/06/2026 20:52

I can’t edit my post, didn’t realise spoilers aren’t allowed.

binliner · 05/06/2026 20:54

@anxietyispartofme Ive not read the books but in the programme Declan is so devoted to her so to me it fit that he wouldn’t & that he would feel guilty for even entertaining the idea. Plus it makes the whole Maud & Tony thing even more outrageous.
