Who's excited?

I can't wait the trailer looks so good.

Sorry, meant to say where Cameron’s story ends.

I think all the female characters have been rounded out really well - Monica and Maud obviously but right down to the B characters like Caitlin, Deirdre & Shelley. Loved Mrs Makepiece as Brown Owl! And I’m really hoping Daysee gets her moment of reckoning with Penney.

GertrudeOHara · 30/05/2026 12:15

at the end of Rivals in the book, when Patrick is moving himself in to Cameron’s, she admits she slept with Declan “it’s practically incest” and guilt over it is the reason that Declan doesn’t make it to Maud’s first night of the Merry Widow.

However. I think Jilly forgot as she said in some interview that Declan would never cheat on Maud.

Notonthestairs · 30/05/2026 12:24

I’ve just gone back to check and you are right! Flipping heck, I might need to reread because I’ve clearly rewritten parts in my head!

DiamondRBD · 30/05/2026 12:53

I wasn't going to watch this as I LOVE Polo, and so was just a bit annoyed they'd chosen to continue this story rather than do another Jilly (although I do get that RFL/his storyline is awful and they can't really film anything with that many horses as people don't care and it's too expensive). Do you think I should watch or will it just annoy me? I was a horsy teenager and I love Luke Alderton so much!

DiamondRBD · 30/05/2026 12:54

Also, both Maud and Cameron are really annoying so didn't love the idea of continuing with the rivals "world".

TheChicDreamer · 30/05/2026 13:11

Does anyone else find Maud unbearable? She was pretty insufferable last season but my god, she’s horrendous now. I can barely watch her!

Notonthestairs · 30/05/2026 13:12

Polo is my favourite of the Rutshire series & Luke Alderton beats all other Cooper men hands down. I think you’ll enjoy it.

As has been previously said and I agree with, the script writers have improved characterisations of some characters (Maud’s behaviour is given context, Monica has been given more screen time etc) so you might find them less annoying then their book versions.

Polo hasn’t been brought in as yet, just hints of it. The last 6 episodes might feature more of the UK Polo storyline but it seems we are months away from being to watch them.

It is a lot of fun.

Blossombunnyy · 30/05/2026 13:45

@TheChicDreamer I find her the same as you totally unwatchable. Cameron I like when she's calm not so much when she's doing the whole ballsy woman thing.

Fred Fred and Shelly are my favourite characters.

TheChicDreamer · 30/05/2026 13:55

@Blossombunnyy yes FredFred and Shelly are my favourites too! And even though Mousey is awful, I find her entertaining. I loved the actress as ‘Mad Kay’ in King Gary!

Blossombunnyy · 30/05/2026 14:36

@TheChicDreamer she made me laugh with the cricket dress and all the bling jewellery Grin I wonder if we will ever get to see inside her boutique.

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 30/05/2026 14:41

And the pink Range Rover.

Agree re Maud. She has a husband with the patience of a saint (albeit he's not perfect), and does nothing but whine to and about him. And she's a terrible mother - treats Taggie like a slave.
As a character, she's fabulously beautiful and selfish but, in real life, you'd run a mile from her!

Blossombunnyy · 30/05/2026 15:15

@Notonthestairs oh yes the pink Range Rover 🤣 bless her she really does think she's the bomb 🤣

@Miranda65 she really is a terrible mother poor Taggie. I was outraged she was too busy shagging evil Tony to remember her daughters 21st. How cute was the dog Rupert gave Taggie.

She was great as Kelly in Mum too.

Thanks - will check that one out

GertrudeOHara · 30/05/2026 16:22

One of the best things about Jilly’s characters is that even if they’re atrocious they have something likeable in them and if they’re “goodies” they’re flawed in some other way. I think Maud is all the awful things Jilly wouldn’t allow herself be - lazy down to not even sewing on name tapes, cheating, easily bored, self obsessed, spendthrift with money she didn’t earn and not feeling guilty about it either. Janey is clearly Jilly in Riders, then she’s Lizzie in this (and Janey gets turned into a comedy avaricious widowed grabby cow in the very last books!), she’s Daisy in Polo and Georgie in TMWMHJ.

what I reeaaaallly want is Rannaldini and Hermione on screen.

TheChicDreamer · 30/05/2026 16:23

I also love ‘Mon Mon’ 🤣 but I wish she’d really give Tony both barrels and boot him out of her ancestral home onto the streets where the weasel belongs. I think Dame Enid is fucking awesome and I really hope she and Monica get together.

ChessieFL · 30/05/2026 16:28

@GertrudeOHara have you seen the 1997 adaptation of TMWMHJ? That’s got Rannaldini and Hermione in. I would love to see a version of TMWMHJ done by the team doing Rivals though. That would be brilliant.

GertrudeOHara · 30/05/2026 16:49

I HAVE! I thought it was not bad frankly - bit serious but actually not a terrible cast. I just need it over 18 episodes, done by Dominic Treadwell Collins! Hugh Bonneville as Ferdie was inspired!

ChessieFL · 30/05/2026 17:29

I liked it as well, in a cheesy sort of way!

ohyesido · 30/05/2026 17:34

binliner · 30/05/2026 10:57

I took it as deliberately ambiguous & assumed the awkwardness the morning after was because of the conversation/attraction

Spoiler, they did do it in the end and it caused Declan to miss Maud’s opening night in the book. She admits it to Patrick later on

Ohh who could play Hermione? Surely only Meryl Streep

CrushingOnRubies · 30/05/2026 21:09

Declan and Rupert in the Robin Hood outfits doing the archery especially the hats 😂

finally been introduced properly to Perdita.

Taggie’s birthday puppy is gorgeous… is it called Patience in the end or is that another animal

BestIsWest · 30/05/2026 21:20

The puppy is Claudius. He’s a baby schnauzer (I have two, they are very cute).

mum2jakie · 30/05/2026 21:24

Think it was based on Claudius and Gertrude from Hamlet?
