Old Thread for the people what likes it all neat 'n' stuff.

JackieNo · 30/06/2008 16:04

Bill Bailey?

JackieNo · 30/06/2008 16:04

Actually whatsisname who was in Black Books with Bill Bailey?

gizmo · 30/06/2008 16:05

Hmmm.

Colin Salmon?
Gabriel Byrne (cos, like, he's so going to give up a Hollywood career for a British TV series)
Liam Neeson?

I confess I am now getting desperate. I don't think I am cut out for a career as a casting director.

Aitch · 30/06/2008 16:05

bill beaumont?

JackieNo · 30/06/2008 16:05

Dylan Moran? Maybe not.

Aitch · 30/06/2008 16:05

oh yes dylan moran, yes please. although he does hae a Regional Accent.

UnquietDad · 30/06/2008 16:06

The new Doctor will be David Tennant.

He's playing the 11th as well as the 10th.

(I'm being serious this time.)

redrobin · 30/06/2008 16:06

bill beaumont...snortle! too funny

Aitch · 30/06/2008 16:07

quiet, UD, we are looking for a new guy now. [fickle]

i thought that laurence miles thing funny but he's a bit of a hater, eh?

gizmo · 30/06/2008 16:07

Which is my belief, UD, but brings us one step closer to the burning question:

What are they going to do when the Doctor runs out of regenerations?

surprise · 30/06/2008 16:09

UnquietDad - do you know that for certain? I'm very sad that DT might be going, so it would make my day to know he's not...

UnquietDad · 30/06/2008 16:09

Lawrence Miles is a fan, believe it or not. He (co)-wrote the definitive 6-volume guide to the programme's first 26 years.

He liked most of the first two post-05 series. He seems to think things have gone downhill this year. Last time this happened to Who, in the late 80s, the ratings were testament to it. Unfortunately for him, this time most of the rest of fandom, the critics and above all the ratings and Audience Appreciation Index (91 this week!!) all point in the other direction.

UnquietDad · 30/06/2008 16:11

surprise - I am as certain as I can be... taps nose...

When the Doctor runs out of regenerations they are hardly going to let it bother them. They'll find a way!

gizmo · 30/06/2008 16:11

Ach, he doesn't seem to be able to combine funny & positive, but if you're going to bitch, you might as well be entertaining.

Plus, even though I don't agree with it, I think some of his points are well argued.

Aitch · 30/06/2008 16:13

i know, i googled him. someone said his books are great but he's a nob, whcih i thought was a bit harsh.
see, the thing is... a lot of his points made great sense but as a viewer i just don't analyse to that degree. as a tv critic i can, but i try not to, because it actually comes across as a bit churlish and, well, mean.

UnquietDad · 30/06/2008 16:13

Miles more Miles

TinkerbellesMum · 30/06/2008 16:13

JackieNo, even if Luke did stay at home, he still has Mr Smith so he could still do a lot from home.

I can't think of any replacement suitable, maybe they'll go with a complete unknown.

Is it true what I've heard they're not making a series next year?

UnquietDad · 30/06/2008 16:14

TM, they are making four feature-length specials - spread out through the year. There will be a full 13-part series in 2010.

KayHarker · 30/06/2008 16:14

UQD, yes, but I thought we'd get a little mileage out of discussing what happens after he does go... you big spoilsport.

OP posts:
RustyBear · 30/06/2008 16:15

But they could easily get out of the limitation on regenerations by saying it was imposed by the Time Lord High Council & that now the High council doesn't exist it won't apply.

UnquietDad · 30/06/2008 16:16

Well, in that case I'm surprised none of you have said Richard Armitage - but he's tied up with Spooks, isn't he?

gizmo · 30/06/2008 16:16

Yes, that's it, Aitch.

Intellectually, what he says is interesting, but emotionally? He's away off the mark.

And since I don't watch Doctor Who for hard science, I'll stick with gut instinct on this one.

Must be a hard life as a critic though - do you really have to separate head and heart that much?

TinkerbellesMum · 30/06/2008 16:17

That makes sense now, why can't they just do them as a series though? How will people cope with such a big gap between episodes?

Good thinking on the limit, what was it supposed to be? Wasn't the Master supposed to have run out of lives? I think in the film, if that counts
