Racially cheap easy quick meals

I like to watch his cooking shows

TheAutumnCrow · 09/01/2026 17:49

So do I, @Blondeshavemorefun, but he does use a lot of ingredients that he just happens to have in already!

And then says something like, ‘a single piece of stem ginger works out at only 49 pence …’ without acknowledging the full cost of the initial outlay. Or what to do with the rest.

Fun telly to shout at though Grin

RaininSummer · 09/01/2026 17:51

Haven't seen this but stem ginger does keep ages so long as it has the syrup covering it. I used it in ginger cake. If you meant root ginger, I keep that in the freezer and grate as needed.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/01/2026 17:57

I don’t have half the stuff he does 😂

I was just giving a random made-up example, @RaininSummer!

But JO does the same with all sorts of ingredients and I’m a bit cynical in my old age.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/01/2026 20:17

Tho he is a chef so …….

I don’t think his sums add up unless he’s suddenly shopping in Farmfoods

Ha ha apologies for all the ginger advice then ;)

caramac04 · 12/01/2026 20:44

I don’t fancy that pasta. Bit like mashed potato sandwiches.

Actually it was quite helpful Smile

TheAutumnCrow · 12/01/2026 20:48

These portion sizes are a bit small. And I eat like a toddler.

OH would eat a lot more than that after a day’s work.

Screamingabdabz · 12/01/2026 20:50

”Fun telly to shout at though”

Are you looking through my window? 😆 I haven’t stopped since he started with his cheap shit tomatoes and pataks sauce.

I live on pasta but they looked rank. A faff too. Nice bloke though!

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/01/2026 21:47

Will finish watching after red eye

Why is everything served on a chopping board!?!?!?!

The frozen fish was from a bag saying Stamford Street which is Sainsbury's Basic range. The tin of coconut milk also looks like the one I buy in Sainsbury's

I remember his cooking meals for a £1
episode 1 “but half a lamb”

He had no understanding of the privilege of being able to afford half a lamb, having the it here skills and knives and the storage.

But I still watch cos I like him
he’s trying to get it. I did notice he was using Stamford Street

I am very fond of Jamie, but his chopping board freaks me out. Likewise James Martin's. They'll cut raw meat or fish on it, give it a cursory wipe with a tea towel then cut something else straight on it 😳

Yeah, that's the fish we buy for our cat. Spoilt cat is eating Jamie-standard food.

Im not sold on his hand washing technique, either. Five seconds in a bowl!

However, I do like JO. His recipes are good.

Root ginger is £1 at most and can be used in a ton of recipes, or frozen. It lasts ages. If it were stem ginger, it wouldn’t last in my house. I would fish a lump out of the jar with a fork most days .Delicious.

Thanks, I’ll have a look.

Sadly our local Sainsburys and Iceland closed. We have a new Aldi however. And we have of course the strange aircraft hangar of doom eating that is Farmfoods.

5foot5 · 13/01/2026 10:27

*cur6ton8git in my post above with the picture should of course read curry tonight.
