I bought that piece of root ginger in Sainsbury's

mum2jakie · 13/01/2026 11:22

I thought there was a lot of faff for not a lot of food! All that pissing about with a blender, frying etc and he basically ended up with a cheesy crumpet and some mushy veg!

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/01/2026 11:35

his recipes definitely need a dish dishwasher

jamie cooks some food

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/01/2026 09:55

Just watching now

i love pesto and sweet pot fries

the chicken burger looks lovely and less than £5

tho not sure how much basil leaves are

an obv the jar of nuts

I get it’s a fraction of the stuff but obv still have to pay out for the stuff orginally

but obv you buy 6 buns so 1.50 not 51p

the gran padano is £3 not 23p for 10g

the chicken is usually £3 fo 6 not £1.09

but I get the gist

And ‘two cloves of garlic, 20p’.

Who and where sells ‘two cloves of garlic’, ‘for 20p’?!

Some of his ‘under a fiver’ meals are for 2, some for 4, some for 6. Some are very modest portions indeed. Some are starters, some are mains, some are snacks, some are puddings. Some contain UPFs, some don’t. Some are cooked from scratch, many aren’t.

I’m not really sure of Jamie’s premise, focus and audience here.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/01/2026 20:36

Yes great is £5 feeds 4

but the burgers were 2. So be £10

But you'd use the rest of the bulb in another meal. He might not be getting everything 100% right here but I do appreciate his attempts to make cheaper meals that are actually tasty and varied.

The ingedients included in each dish might well be a few pennies worth but you still have to buy for example,a whole jar of fennel to get a teaspoon of fennel. Also,Jamie has assumed you already have salt and pepper and olive oil.why not assume you already have bacon or chicken as well?
The brunch recipe had a pack of crumpets,8 rashers of smoky bacon,cheese,peas,1/2 lemon, eggs.i don't know anywhere i could get that for a fiver.
But credit where credit is due,you can't knock his enthusiasm and the food looks really nice so I'll be trying a lot of them but I won't expect it to be as cheap as he says.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2026 14:59

Excatly what I said that need the stuff to begin with

Yes, I agree. Jamie Oliver could do a programme or segment in Ep 1 about ‘How to stock your store cupboard for all the meals in this series for under a tenner!’

That’d be entertaining and useful. He could cover what store cupboard ingredients, fridge stuff and herbs/spices etc you need, shopping for bargains in different types of city/countryside, how to store things for longer at home … I’d genuinely enjoy watching that.

That’s a great idea!

I always remember his previous budget cooking programme that began buy half a lamb.

(sorry if I’ve posted that already. Im clearly not over it)

MotherTuckinGenius · 29/01/2026 15:52

You really can’t make any od JO’s meals for “just a fiver” but DH and I love him and his cooking shows nevertheless. BUT where is Conker??

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2026 19:12

Conker??

Caught half of the show this week, there are very few cookery shows on TV now so I do make the effort to watch if I find one (so long as it's not James Martin). Those bagels looked amazing. Chocolate mousse pretty good too.

SingleUseTeaTowel · 31/01/2026 05:13

@EnchantingDaytime if you have discovery + there’s a whole dedicated food section on there, hundreds of cookery shows (including James Martin on a motorbike around America - haha) but lots of the Hairy Bikers too

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 31/01/2026 05:16

I would watch but I can’t stand the man. Pity as I like the ideas!
