That’s a great idea!

I always remember his previous budget cooking programme that began buy half a lamb.

(sorry if I’ve posted that already. Im clearly not over it)

Nigel Slater did that ‘casual leg of lamb’ thing once. He was making a ‘supper from leftovers’ and he opened his fridge and a nearly whole leg of lamb (cooked) was sitting there wrapped delicately in greaseproof paper and string. Like everybody has one!

I do like him though Smile

Sophie Grigson also did a series called ‘feasts for a fiver’ in the early 2000s. Obviously with inflation those recipes will be more expensive now but they were pretty good and sound better than Jamie’s! You can probably still track down the book that went with the series.

"Who and where sells ‘two cloves of garlic’, ‘for 20p’?!"

But you'd use the rest of the bulb in another meal. He might not be getting everything 100% right here but I do appreciate his attempts to make cheaper meals that are actually tasty and varied.

I agree. I think its aimed at much of the Mumsnet audience type, who will have salt, pepper and kitchen knives, and are reasonable cooks. Id rather take his strict £5 budget with a pinch of salt and make tasty reasonably cheap meals than be washing 10p baked beans and making them into a revolting spag bol with some tinned meat.
Although I did watch ' batch from scratch' with Joe Swash and the Batch Lady and on Thursday made 10 veggie meals all batch cooked. The shopping cost me £80 for the veggie meal version and the portions we've had so far have easily served 4 including a greedy DH and 2 teenage boys. So even that was £8 per 4 people so maybe he needs to up his budget a bit. I had salt and pepper in!

Yes, I agree. Jamie Oliver could do a programme or segment in Ep 1 about ‘How to stock your store cupboard for all the meals in this series for under a tenner!’

That’d be entertaining and useful. He could cover what store cupboard ingredients, fridge stuff and herbs/spices etc you need, shopping for bargains in different types of city/countryside, how to store things for longer at home … I’d genuinely enjoy watching that.

That would be really good. I love JO's cookbooks and only really regularly use them. He has loads of prep/preservation ideas, and herbs or curry pastes etc that you can make into icecubes and use as you need. It would make a great first episode!

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 02/02/2026 23:19

And weird noodle fish cakes

beef patties with a salad with a nice dressing (police oil/ red wine vinegar/ English mustard)- looked tasty tbf.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/02/2026 09:01

£2.40 for 2 people so why didn’t he say £4.80 for 4 with the gnocchi

OP posts:
EnchantingDaytime · 03/02/2026 09:13

I thought the gnochi looked great, loved the way he mashed the potatoes out of their skins and made crisps with the skins. Not so sure about the other dishes, but I was getting interrupted by family by then and not paying as much attention.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/02/2026 10:20

Yes I may make that. Tho not blue cheese but grate some other cheese

Delia was /is a million times the cook that Jamie Oliver will ever be, her cheats cooking recipes piss all over the stupid crap that he's churning out on this faux budget cooking show. She advocated for things like frozen /tinned onion and garlic and ginger that you can use in a small amount, just infinitely more authentic.

caramac04 · 04/02/2026 13:29

I came across a Jamie Oliver book yesterday, Simply Jamie. I opened it at random at the recipe was crispy noodles fishcakes. It might be slightly different but I’ll look through this book again and might not bother with the one to this series.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/02/2026 18:06

8pm tonight

chicken sausage white bean bake

egg noodles with aubergine

treacle tart made with cornflakes

The grandkids just eating the plain noodles there, I spotted.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2026 11:47

I’m like Jamie and like hot pudding with cold custard

OP posts:
EnchantingDaytime · 10/02/2026 11:52

Ah no, I'm not keen on cold custard, too gloopy, I prefer it hot, but I do love the contrast of ice cream with a hot pudding. I liked the look of the toad in the hole too.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2026 11:58

Yes love a sausage 🙀😂

OP posts:
gototogo · 10/02/2026 12:28

For anyone interested in making the recipes, they are on his website. I’ve made 3 so far all delicious though I did add things like fresh herbs and extra garlic to one (you can’t really ever have too much garlic!!).

yes sometimes it misses the mark a bit with things I’m willing to compromise on but it does illustrate how you can even today make home cooked food on a budget that’s reasonably healthy too.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/02/2026 00:05

Every time he tastes it he loves and adores it

wonder if it actually sometimes isn’t that nice but still says wow the flavours an textures and taste just explode on the tongue etc

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 16/02/2026 18:01

I don’t like kidney beans but his chilli looks nice tho cost wise £1.26 for the mince do 250g

im sure 500g of pork mince is more than £2.52

OP posts:
EnglishGirlApproximately · 20/02/2026 23:06

Pork mince is £2.55 for 500g at Tesco so definitely doable at that price I'd say!

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/02/2026 08:28

Wow is it really that cheap v beef mince which is heading up to £5 for 5%

know you can get 20% fat cheaper but that’s so fatty /gristle
