A second thread for Brookie watchers….

I don’t remember the youngest Dixon being so annoying but he is!

No, I don’t remember him being this annoying either!!
I remember Jacqui and Mike more than him.

Loving the Farnhams so far! As a child watching this I thought they seemed so aspirational and they have a nanny too! Did appear a bit out of place for the Close.

Famua · 20/03/2026 02:44

Soap cross-post. Just watxhing coronation street with the story about the pupil teacher
relationship and have been reminded about how the same story line went in Brookside. Poor Tracey Corkhill -‘named in the paper, victim blamed by her parents and still
gets reminded years later! Very difficult, thank goodness, for the lad in Coronation street.

Imagine being a nanny in that little house with two other adults, a toddler and two visiting children. It would be claustrophobic.

Also, I know 'the kiss' was groundbreaking in its day, but the scriptwriters are preparing us for Margaret's lesbianism with a sledgehammer. Likes football, can mend cars and washing machines, not interested in 'lads' - it's of its time, isn't it?

Doesn't she also have a controversial relationship with a Catholic priest?
I agree about the house even with her own room non of them would have much privacy and where do Matthew and Emily sleep when they stay over,

bigTillyMint · 20/03/2026 21:51

Interesting how uninvolved DD and Ron were in their daughter’s swimming skills, with her just doing the race and then explaining to them that she might be able to get into a better club/squad. No helicopter parenting there!

She did, I think the priest was DD’s brother iirc.

I hadn’t really picked up on the ‘lesbian code’ signals. I thought the early 90s were even more unsubtle and lesbians were normally depicted as larger ladies with short hair and big boots!

it is interesting what you notice about what to me seems the near past. Just a little detail like anyone else notice that styles in flowers for gifting have changed? In the 80s and 90s flowers were most often gifted in a big fanned out shape, in cellophane. Somewhere along the years that style disappeared and it became all tied posies and boxes.

Thats a good point ,yes I remember bouquets of flowers fanned out in cellophane, and now as you say they
tend to come in boxes in their own water
Also funeral flowers, I remember when peoole used to send individual wreaths to funerals
I have sadly been to quite a few funerals in the last couple of years including my mum and nowadays it tends to be just one bouquet of flowers on the coffin from the immediate family and people can make donations to charities instead of sending wreaths

Yes, I remember donation in lieu of flowers being relatively novel even in the mid 90s when my grandfather died. Such small but evocative details…

Now you mention it flowers really have changed - is it a sustainable thing? Did someone get flowers in brookside recently?

A wreaths was sent to Billy and Sheila which is what made me think of funerals, and didnt max send Patricia some roses
Another thing thats changed is how young men dress when going out
Owen was wearing a suit to take Sammie out .

ShyMaryEllen · 21/03/2026 17:30

I don't remember the priest - a lot of it I remember as I watch it. I suppose he'd be unlikely to press her for sex, though, so it would fit.

I know what you mean about the changes. It's little things like people buying newspapers, and having conversations on landlines, doing that 'batting away and shushing others' thing that was so annoying. Does anyone smoke?

Good point re: the smoking. It was everywhere in the 80s and 90s and although I can recall someone sometime in Brookie smoking, I can’t think who or when. Smokers really did rule back then and, for
whatever reason, it’s not shown at the prevalence I recall.

Marie Jackson used to smoke like a chimney in Brookie but I read somewhere that Phil Redmond is very anti-smoking so there wasn’t much in it. The actress who played Marie died of lung cancer aged 55.

And Doreen corkhill

NCTDN · 22/03/2026 09:05

(Smoked, not died)

i was googling Vince Earl aka Ron Dixon and saw that him and Bev Dixon were in Paul Heaton and Jacqui about video as older versions of them. I don’t know how I missed that! When he appeared in the close least seem I did think how similar he looked, but I suppose at the time that the housemartins were around, Paul heaton was much younger.
can’t find a full length version of the video which is a shame.

x2boys · 22/03/2026 09:23

The actress that plays Nikki ,Tracy Corkhill,s friend who she's gone on holiday with
Is the real life sister of Paul Byatt who plays Mike Dixon.

I remembered Doreen when I woke in the small hours😀. she tried to stop a couple of times when they were strapped for cash, but always lapsed.

Bloody hell - Doe went out of it a few weeks back. My memory and recall is getting so bad that I’ll be able to watch this series all
over again soon as if for the first time!
