Use this thread when the other is full, thanks!

@ilovesooty I believe George could well win. People said it of Joe Sugg and he didn’t but he belongs now to a much earlier era of social media. Almost retro by comparison. There was a little squad of them who all knew each other IIRC and there was a massive MN thread about an event they ran which was shite. They are nearly all parents now, the young fans have moved on.

Edited

I agree re Joe Sugg plus he was at his peak around 2014/15 and when he went on strictly in 2019 he wasn’t quite as popular as he had been.
George is at his peak now.

Margaritadarling · 08/12/2025 14:43

I still miss the old format, half doing same Latin and other half doing ballroom.
I miss ballroom, which was why Balinder’s(SP) ballroom was so beautiful .
I split my votes between her and Lewis last week.
But don’t really care who wins now!

Someone who pretends to be an amateur but has professional training.

Neither Amber nor Lewis have pretended that they haven't had some training in the past.

I like Karen and sometimes voted for her in favour of Lewis, but if there is anyone's dance background is being covered up, then it's hers! She hasn't denied it herself, but Carlos and Shirley are pushing the narrative that she's never danced before, which is simply not true.

I never said they "pretended" anything. I think you have the wrong poster.
I was clarifying a term for someone who asked.

I'm just going by your definition, and both Lewis and Amber have been given the ringer label, but neither of them pretended to be amateurs.

Lewis is an actor by profession.

Amber is a musical theatre performer, so dance will feature in varying degrees.

Someone asked what a "ringer" was.
I explained the term.
I never referred to either Lewis or Amber.

It takes two will certainly be interesting tonight. Katya's face never lies!

Poor Katya, she did look very upset last night ☹️

Never ever, even with that Wynn nonsense you could see it her mouth said one thing but her face told the truth.

She meant he was supportive and "her fan" are you being deliberately obtuse or did you genuinely not understand her tone.

no need to be rude. people are allowed to have differing opnions.

Freysimo · 08/12/2025 16:10

KimberleyClark · 08/12/2025 12:04

I think it needs stripping back right down to the basics. I do think they are trying too hard for a younger audience, both with the music choices and the lack of boring old waltzes and foxtrots.

Talking of which, Karen has done hardly any ballroom so I'm guessing she's quite weak in this.

I wasn't being rude, opinion is fine but you misinterpreted Amber's intention.which isn't opinion imo.

Holluschickie · 08/12/2025 06:42

Doesn't leave a sour taste for me as I love ringers. Though I have not voted for Amber as I preferred Lewis. I realise I am alone in this.

No non-ringer would have joined that late anyway.

You aren't alone. I have voted for Lewis pretty consistently. The boy can dance, perform, seems teachable, has a good, steady personality and seems generally grounded.

Piggywaspushed · 08/12/2025 17:01

Technically in sport a ringer is someone an opposition team brings in to win and pretends they aren't any good or have no prior form. So for Lewis and Amber to be technical ringers, their past would have to be concealed (and in Amber's case her present!). I think Shirley came close to that this week with her West End comment. We would also have to believe there was nefarious over promotion of Amber for her to be a proper ringer.

Kreepture · 08/12/2025 17:15

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 08/12/2025 09:39

Neither can I. It shouldn't have surprised me but it did.

So first some people don't want any disabled contestants because they "ruin the vibe". And now it's annoying that non deaf people are making a small gesture to include the deaf community for some reason. Except for when the actual deaf person did it. That was acceptable because she was one of them.

I can't eye roll hard enough 🙄🙄🙄.

Typical Mumsnet ablism really. they'd rather we weren't cluttering up their viewing screens with our disabilities.

The term ringer has pretty much evolved to be anyone who is "too good" for Strictly that they must be a professional dancer or had extensive training. Anyway, I think the person asking probably has their answer.

@Holluschickie You're definitely not alone in voting for Lewis. I think there are more of us, but just not so vocal on these threads as a few of us!

Piggywaspushed · 08/12/2025 17:25

Yeah, I do agree. I just think the use of the word can (not always - sometimes said in good humour!) have nasty overtones and imply cheating or special favours. That has particularly come across this year in online commentary on Amber but, in the past, Alexandra and Layton stick out.

Who does everyone think will win?

I think Karen will win, but I'm shit at predictions
Thanks Eine 😊

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/12/2025 17:30

im starting to think that George will do a Hollinsesque type victory. Not the best dancer but is at least a beginner and has a big following

Strictly is learning from America and attracting the younger people via clips on insta and TikTok and with contestants like George. It’s simple and effective.

PeonyPatch · 08/12/2025 17:35

I would like Karen or Amber to win based on their dance ability, but I’ve got a feeling George will which I don’t think is deserved 🫣

CaveMum · 08/12/2025 17:42

Lost you for a while there!

Re the comments about SCD being shelved, this absolutely won’t happen. Apart from Traitors it’s the most watched show on TV, why on earth would you bench it?!

Yes, it's not going to happen.

Same with Bake Off. Lots of young uns on it this year and they are all over social media with their whimsy.

Funnily enough I really resented Chris Hollins his win but I can live with George I think. Possibly because the person I wanted to win (Alex) is out
