Forget about the fireworks, stay in as new series of Shetland starts next week!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002lt9z

I think those of us who have stuck with Shetland through thick and thin, just about filled up the last thread which is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4931718-shetland-season-8?page=40

Given how bad many 9pm slots have been recently this series may even be a pleasant surprise.

BBC One - Shetland, Series 10, Episode 1

The body of an elderly woman is found in the remote village of Lunniswick.

I agree the Dad leaving the child after freaking out she was out of eye line earlier is abit jarring. Is it too obvious to indicate she’s going to now go missing ?
also is it too obvious to think Morag is going to be the next victim and Stevie is involved somehow?
And the storylines usually link but the drugs seems so separate at the moment - unless the 400,000 is drugs money and why she was killed. I agree the video might be relevant there - but that leaves Stevie and the social work theory clear ….
I thought poet guy was dodgy (and I thought whisky would be from him until the saw it in the husbands house) but James saying he’s a good guy has thrown me as I thought James has been set up as a character to be trusted … so maybe a genuine romance ?!?

NorWouldTilly · 13/11/2025 08:14

Intriguing as ever.

I suppose Stevie is Stevie - and not just a random former foster child who has taken over her identity? Either way I don’t fancy Amy’s partner’s chances of making it to the end of the series safe and sound …

The outfits!
Is this the best place to obsess about the scarves, jumpers and coats? If so, where did they get Ruth’s scarf? I’ve done reverse image searches, the lot, but can’t find an identical one. If not, send me to the thread where we can obsess together!

I like Ruth’s coat, scarf and the knitted tank top.

We haven’t seen Tosh in a fair isle yoke sweater yet, I think?

StewkeyBlue · 13/11/2025 15:45

I wonder whether the very clean shaven ‘wee shite’ drug informer will turn out to be a social work case?

The whisky: history neighbour says she didn’t drink. So why have they assumed that it was all ok that she had drunk a huge quantity of Mr Lana’s special edition whisky?

Because it’s not as if some drug dealers might be monitoring your house in case of attempted fleeing, then spot you’d left your child home alone, and see an opportunity for some handy hostage taking.

Isn’t it more that she might fall over the cliff into the sea or bump into the as yet unknown murderer?

Mind you, the poor child is having the holiday from hell, anyway. Her mother is freaking out and perpetually on her burner phone awaiting contact from some drug kingpin, her father is rubbernecking about the various arrests for the murder about fifty feet away from their holiday home, and the only time they leave the house, all she gets to do is walk by herself along a beach.

She might have more fun with the evil drug dealers.

Are the drugs that Holiday Restaurant Mother is carrying the shipment that was supposed to be coming in on the trawler according to Louden?

Stevie looked absolutely unhinged while telling her nephew that she and him and his mummy were family. Definitely would be making sure my doors were locked and that I checked the back seat of my car if I were Nice Sister's partner or Billy's Morag!

IwantToRetire · 13/11/2025 17:32

Must have missed something.

Why does anyone think the couple are part of the drugs shipment.

It seems that she has somehow initiated this "holiday" for some reason (may be drugs). He thinks they are getting away from it all to be a family. And does most of the caring. And she is just remote, unengaged.

And also, what a stereotype. WoC holidays in Scotland and can only be because of drugs?!

I am struggling, which is often the plot line in Shetland, with who is in which family, and the history between the families.

I wonder if the unused money in the bank is related to the son's death, some sort of compensation, or insurance, and she just felt it was contaminated and didn't want to touch it.

Still thinking it might be suicide, and is some sort of atonement for ... ?

I thought the revealing of the violence of the supposedly caring husband of the firesetter, was well done. But sadly almost inevitable in tv Shetland. But then also in real life.

I dont notice the clothes, although Billy's wife looked "smart" compared to others. Although as I rely on hairstyles to recognise charcters as I get faces mixed up, I think Ruth's freeflowing wind blown look confusing!

Just to add, although it would be another cliched, that sister sent to the mainland children's home, is more likely to be the drug connected.

I think someone up thread suggested this.

The holiday woman has a bag full of drugs, and a burner phone, and told her husband that she borrowed money when her restaurant went into debt, and now has to do what someone says -- which is to deliver the drugs to someone on Shetland. As the first episode started with an expected drugs shipment on a trawler on the information of Louden failing to arrive, it doesn't seem a massive stretch to think that using Holiday Woman and her family might be a safer way of getting the drugs onto the island for the same dealer.

Edited

I missed a bag full of drugs, if that is what it was.

And I thought the second phone was maybe about some other relationship.

But if this is the plot line, not up to Shetland standard, as it is such a cliche.

Yes, when her husband found the second phone and assumed she was having an affair because the text message said 'Are you still on for tonight?' or similar, she took him out to the shed and showed him a backpack full of drugs, and said she'd been told to take it to Shetland. That she'd got into financial difficulties with the restaurant, presumably borrowed money and now had to do this 'favour' for someone she is clearly afraid of. Hence the sudden Shetland holiday.

Godness. I must have fallen asleep! Blush

My favourite line was from the holiday husband, “I wanted to go to Mallorca!”

2Rebecca · 13/11/2025 19:21

It’s Gary Tank Commander as Colin. A brilliant series. Does no-one else here watch it? There is even random singing and dancing a la singing detective but funnier

2Rebecca · 13/11/2025 19:23

He was also in the A word with the wonderful Christopher Eccleston

2Rebecca · 13/11/2025 19:28

Where are the overweight Shetland people?

Or wanders out looking for parents and is Kidnapped by Stevie who clearly is looking for a small child to look after?

The detectives don't seem to have considered the possibility that Eadie didn't drink the bottle of whiskey voluntarily. You'd think a woman of that size would be unconscious or dead pretty quickly.

I also wondered if Stevie is in fact Stevie? as they didn't see each other for years. Also I wondered if Stevie is involved in some sort of county-lines and cuckooing in her sister's home - which would tie her in with the drug dealers.

Also wondering whether the 2 lads involved in the boat tragedy might have been up to something illegal.

Pinkbox · 13/11/2025 20:47

I definitely assumed someone force fed her the whiskey, then dragged her outside, losing a slipper en route.

It’s going to be something related to her work and they are throwing in all the troubled foster child tropes 🙄

Billy looked nice in his woolly jumper, he’s going for a Perez bless him.

They are also on the long running Ashley Jensen/Shetland thread in S&B, revealing the source of a number of items including The Scarf:

Thought the same. Surely an option they'd have to consider?

IwantToRetire · 13/11/2025 21:18

If she had been forced to to drink the whiskey wouldn't there be bruising or something.

Or was she drugged first?
