As @EineReiseDurchDieZeit is unable to start this week's thread I volunteered to do it, so here we are.

I hope this is OK!

Please do not post videos on this thread to avoid making it slow to load - videos go on the dedicated thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/5400581-strictly-2025-video-thread-come-share-your-favourites?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=app_share

Who is in charge of pairing the music with the dances?
They need to go.
It can (and has!) absolutely ruin the dance with the wrong song.

I’ve just seen this post and it’s a hard agree from me. Particularly the Tango. Rarely does it have correct music.

CaveMum · 13/10/2025 08:55

I listened to Chris M on the Parenting Hell podcast last week, he talked a bit about Strictly.

He said the celebs are asked to provide a list of songs they like and the producers try to use them if they can make them fit - he did admit to putting some stupid ones on his list!

He also talked quite frankly about being asked to do the show several times and that he finally agreed to do it on the basis that he was going to put everything he could into it. He said he didn’t want to fail through lack of trying.

He also said his daughter didn’t want him to do it initially. When he did the first show apparently she was pacing the room (she was about 10/11 at the time) with nerves and when he started his dance within seconds she burst into tears and sobbed the whole way through the routine. Bless her 😢

'I am heartily bored of Shirley dribbling over the men and carping at the older women - or at least older women without the status and popularity to push back'

Same. She was so hard on Balvinder on Saturday - went on and on saying one harsh thing after the next. And the dribbling does get out of hand too - she's practically bellowing 'phwoar!' and rubbing her things like Vic Reeves 🤦🏻‍♂️ tone it down Shirley!

I think contestants like Hamza, Bill Bailey and Chris become popular with the public because they are so screamingly obviously what the show is really meant to be about - somebody who genuinely doesn’t have a dance background, working their butt off to become good at dancing. I wish we had more of them.

I understand sticking a couple of ringers in to be “good” in the early rounds but pacemakers in most sports drop off before the end, they don’t pretend to be in the race.

I would like to see a return to just two or three dances in the early weeks to avoid a total non dancer having to manage eg a Samba or Foxtrot in the first couple of weeks. That just magnifies the ringer effect.

I am heartily bored of Shirley dribbling over the men and carping at the older women - or at least older women without the status and popularity to push back.

💯 this.
I was thinking the same on Saturday about the old days when half the cast would do a tango and the other half the cha cha and there was no couples choice bollocks or something like that. Even though the total dud non dancers didn't dance any better, it did feel like a fairer playing field somehow. And less of a sensory overload on us viewers.

Finally! I am glad someone else has noticed this. Shirley has form. She gave Fleur East and other women such a hard time, badgering them for misplaced hands or toes in Week 2!

Meanwhile endless fawning over the shuffling, plank like men. They already had way more men than women two years in a row. Why do they want more women out?

I would like to see an elegant routine from Harry that is not about his muscles.

I loved how he said his daughter didn't want him to do it because she was scared he was going to get hurt and break a leg or something. Most kids would be more concerned about their parents embarrassing them. Burst out laughing when Josh said about his wife obviously not being that bothered 😅.

The stuff about the shows he'd been turning down was really interesting but also incredibly cringe. The industry has got a long way to go in terms of actual disability equality and it sounds like the BBC does actually operate like an episode of W1A!

I think its become a lot worse under Shirley’s tenure. When Bruno was in charge of the “phwoars” he did it with more humour, a lot more sparingly and for dances (rather than dancers) which were genuinely sensuous (I'm thinking Rachel and Vincenzi’s Rumba). He had a phwoar at Kelvin doing a salsa or rumba but not when he was doing a waltz for instance.

Shirley has turned it from self deprecating faux hot flushes a la Bruno into full on tasteless leering which is simply embarrassing to watch and I imagine not pleasant to receive.

Her negativity to older women is just worse with each series. She always over criticises older women who don’t come in with a great aptitude whilst young men who are far worse are excused because they are new to it. I really notice it when she has a “national treasure” woman in the same line up as a less known older woman or one who is simply too good to rubbish - then she pulls her punches a bit.

Its just so bloody predictable and tedious that I now reserve some votes for older women Shirley makes into targets.

Holluschickie · 13/10/2025 09:33

I am only going to vote for the women now. I think they are better anyway, except for Lewis and maybe George.

Holluschickie · 13/10/2025 09:38

I hope seeing the elegant and graceful Balvinder face off against shuffling Ross makes voters realise what they have done next week.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 13/10/2025 09:45

Agree with the comments about Shirley, was Joe Sugg her first desperate crush?

Indigovelvet · 13/10/2025 09:53

Thing is when Shirley gets called out on this odd behaviour she plays the bullied card - as if the victim.

Garamousalata · 13/10/2025 10:02

I completely agree about the music not being matched with the dances. And yes, Shirley is an embarrassment.

SweetBaklava · 13/10/2025 10:21

Garamousalata · 12/10/2025 20:26

Lang Lang wasn’t overly challenged with that piece. They should have got him to play the second movement from Shostakovich Piano Concerto Number two.

Ohhhhhh that Shostakovich piece is probably my favourite piece of piano music ever, utterly gorgeous!

SweetBaklava · 13/10/2025 10:26

WTAF was that Minecraft dance? The costumes looked like they were borrowed from a Year 6 production and not a TV show being broadcast to millions. Enough of is this shite for the love of god… the target audience is not 10 year old Minecraft fans!!!!

Edited to add… the staff at my kids primary school would have done a better job

NeedWineNow · 13/10/2025 10:46

We've just caught up with Saturday and last night.

Really liked Amber and Nikita. Thought it was lovely. Also enjoyed La Voix, simple and moving. The over and under marking is a bit obvious even at this early stage. I think week 3 is a bit early to bring out the 10 score, however good you think the dance was. Lewis and Ellie definitely over marked.

We were really surprised that Bal was in the dance off. Was it due to Shirley's scathing remarks I wonder? DH said he thought it was a cert that Ross would be out after the Saturday show.

Loved the Mulan routine from Kai and Nancy. Lovely music and beautifully danced with no whooping or screaming from the audience. Joyous and more like that please.

cordelia16 · 13/10/2025 11:45

It almost feels like there should be two shows:

  1. Strictly Come Dancing - concentrating on ballroom and Latin, like in the past. Less faffing about, more traditional music, no couples choice, just ballroom and Latin dances.

  2. Strictly Dance Fever - but not like the previous Graham Norton iteration where both parts of the couple were amateur, trained dancers

but where you have a professional contemporary dancer pairing up with a (perhaps younger) celebrity - Maisie, HRVY, Mollie, George, etc. The dances could be more modern and current. My fave contestants have been Mollie, Saffron, HRVY, Karim, and Maisie, and I love George this season, so I would love to watch a show like this (and I'm 60yo for full disclosure).

When I see on this forum that some people loved the Minecraft number while lots hated or didn't understand it, some loved George's couple's choice while others hated it, etc, it makes me think :)

REP22 · 13/10/2025 14:58

I caught up with this last night. It was right that Ross went.

I feel guilty about Chris - I thought he was actually good in his Thor dance (that hair is a good look for him), but I laughed aloud (woke up the dog) when I first saw him and his little prop because all I could think about every time he appeared was "Mallett's Mallet". Sorry Chris...

awaynboilyurheid · 13/10/2025 15:37

Actually the Minecraft dance ( def not the target audience) was not Jason Gilchrists, his choreography in group dances in always stunning
No idea who did this mess but I’m sure it wasn’t him.

Sevenfold · 13/10/2025 17:02

It was a shame balvinder was in the dance off, I wonder if it is because she is quiet compared to others and the dance was a quiet one.
I don’t really have a favourite this year , so have picked Vicky and Harry for some reason.
I wonder what will happen when Ellie is in the dance off.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 13/10/2025 19:00

Just had my rejection email from BBC audience again. It’s such a bucket list item for me and I feel I’ll never get picked 😩

tennissquare · 13/10/2025 19:02

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit, my rejection email also received and deleted!

Octoberaddsagale · 13/10/2025 19:24

My rejection email has arrived, also.

WarrenTofficier · 13/10/2025 19:29

No sign of my rejection email - I'd like to think it's a good sign but my email address is near the end of the alphabet so I assume I'm just further down the 'nope' list than the rest of you.

StrictlySequinsandStiIettos · 13/10/2025 22:20

Boo. No Blackpool Ballroom for me.

Ahh was it Blackpool rejections that have just come out? I didn't apply for Blackpool so that would explain my lack email.
