A TV documentary that follows the work of a police force will show how the investigation into the actions of a teenage killer unfolded.

Nicholas Prosper used a shotgun to kill his mother Juliana Falcon, 48, his brother Kyle, 16, and his 13-year-old sister, Giselle, at their home in Luton on 13 September 2024.
The 19-year-old, who was arrested in the hours after the murders, was jailed for 49 years in March. A trial heard he intended to carry out a shooting at his former primary school.

The Channel Four series 24 Hours in Police Custody, which follows the work of investigators at Bedfordshire Police, will feature the case over two nights on 5 and 6 October.

Nicholas Prosper jailed for at least 49 years for Luton triple murders

After killing his family in their tower block in Luton, Nicholas Prosper planned to carry out a mass shooting at his former primary school.

Poor Joshua and Gary just wanted to be a good dad and grandad.

LandofTute · 10/12/2025 09:51

I was surprised that Samantha lost custody at first, but then when you think about her trying to not only cut Joshua out of his life and move abroad but helping to plot to have him killed it makes sense. Plus there might be other stuff we don't know

Paul2023 · 10/12/2025 09:52

I wonder if Joshua’s mum took Sam to court for custody before she went to the US? And that’s the reason she left because she lost ?

Its highly likely Sam knew what her dad was going to do but unfortunately it’s very hard for the CPS to prove it.

Yes she got away with conspiracy to murder.

Sam and Paul were obviously on their way out of the country the day her dad did the shootings, that’s was clearly the plan. Stephen shoots them dead, Adam and Paul fly out the country.

Scary the lengths people will go to.

BlondeFool · 10/12/2025 10:01

How tragic. Joshua and Gary seemed like really decent good men. Sam definitely knew her father’s plans and no proof went in her favour. The fact she left her son despite his devoted dad and grandfather being brutally murdered shows what a shit person she is.

I actually cried when I saw Mandy got custody.

BlondeFool · 10/12/2025 10:02

I too thought her new husband was an older child from a previous relationship!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/12/2025 11:31

With that lot for relatives, it’s a good job paternal grandma has custody. As PP said Josh and his dad seemed to be a good dad and grandad.

Love this series, and this was a good episode. I feel so sorry for the son, what an awful situation.

Sam is guilty as anything. How CPS didn’t put her on trial I do not know. Stephen is a narcissist who just hated losing face (even second hand via his daughter), and felt he was the only one should have power over the situation. Total arrogant idiot with a major God complex. 30 yrs too short - he should never leave prison.

I'm glad you mentioned narcissist, that was my thought when I was watching it but am loathe to use the word nowadays because it often results in criticism or dismissal. The only thing that had me doubting my armchair diagnosis was that I couldn't see any signs of anger in Stephen's expressions. My experience of narcissistic people is that they anger quickly and find that hard to hide, as good as they are at deception.

Perhaps Samantha hasn't fallen far from her father's tree, hence the leaving her first born in another country while she swans off to captain her dinghy. What'll she do when soldier boy grows up and things, somehow, don't work out?

ticktockali · 10/12/2025 12:17

I think her leaving for America was because of guilt. Who on earth would leave their young children after its father had been murdered to start a new life elsewhere.

Someone with her own interests at heart.

Do we know why Sam, husband and family were staying in a hotel ? And Paul didn’t seem very surprised that a bunch of armed police were suddenly outside his room telling him to come out

Because they had sold their house, it was mentioned in the program.

Yes, only in the 2nd episode though I think.

ScarilyClose · 10/12/2025 15:01

The fact she left without the child who had been at the centre of the court battle was very telling, wasn't it?

Like he didn't really matter any more now he wasn't a pawn or a way to get one over on her ex. That poor kid. After losing his dad and grandad to murder, and the circumstances surrounding that murder, he should have been her first priority but nah, off to the US she skipped. So he has basically lost both parents and both grandfathers.

sweatervest · 10/12/2025 15:15

Mandy saying "I've got my ray of sunshine" had me in tears.

It made me think of Natalie hemmings children (who also went to a relative when she said was murdered). Such hideous repercussions for children in those situations.

That was the saddest 24 hours in police custody I can remember.

PuttingOnTheKitsch · 10/12/2025 17:03

Lots of people on here seems very certain about things. We only really have one side of events.

BarmyFotheringay · 09/12/2025 22:37

Maybe grandmother got custody because Josh was awarded custody before he was murdered.

Yes and the fact that Josh was given full custody says a lot too doesn’t it. There must be a reason for that, but unfortunately they didn’t go in to that further. That poor little boy. It was such a hard watch and just heartbreaking all round.

like what @PuttingOnTheKitsch?

There is no doubt a whole host on stuff we didn’t see, but some things are indisputable:

  1. the dad and paternal grandad were killed directly due to the custody battle
  2. The mum lost custody
  3. the mum fucked off to the USA, leaving her child behind.
MinecraftMum40 · 10/12/2025 17:55

Cocolapew · 10/12/2025 00:10

Did they say that Sam and Stephen only really got back in touch in 2019? I wonder why that was.
As an aside the airman looked about 15 .

Yeah it would seem he wasn’t in her life until she was an adult. Her new American husband looked like her teenage child. Bizarre.

MinecraftMum40 · 10/12/2025 18:00

LandofTute · 10/12/2025 09:44

Yes. It's like she was only interested in winning. Then when she lost custody she wasn't bothered about contact.

Yes exactly this. The battle wasn’t to lose her son, it was to “beat” Josh. He was basically used as a pawn. That poor little boy.

youalright · 10/12/2025 18:18

Fawful · 10/12/2025 08:00

She could always take comfort in the fact that she avoided prison in the first place… Such a good liar, telling police “I’ll never forgive him for what he’s done” when he was caught, when she clearly expected it. I wonder generally if people who work in the legal profession or the police feel that the CPS is sometimes a bit problematic in how it decides not to charge, or if it’s just my the public’s perception

I would imagine the police get very frustrated with cps quite often

I got confused - was he given full residency or shared but in the UK? I could work out if he’d successfully got a Prohibited Steps Order or similar.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/12/2025 18:46

@ScarilyCloseand his half sister.

burnoutbabe · 10/12/2025 20:20

Yes the dad didn’t win full custody. Just that the son could not leave uk.
it may also have been that Sam’s husband had to return to the USA, being part of their military. So at that point it’s stay in uk with son or go to USA with daughter. And probably zero support or family in uk anyway. I doubt she could have kept daughter here if they are a USA citizen? So a difficult choice anyway.

JudgeBreads · 10/12/2025 20:39

MinecraftMum40 · 10/12/2025 18:00

Yup, Ex BIL put his former Mrs through hell with a custody battle that he could never have fulfilled. Former MIL enabled the whole shitshow, all because they wanted to “beat” the ex wife/DIL. When it was decided he’d get every second weekend, he fucked off to the other end of the country, having completely lost interest in his dc, and he wonders why they won’t have anything to do with him now.

Paul2023 · 10/12/2025 21:41

I feel so sorry for Josh and Gary, they seemed like decent enough men. Obviously it’s the family who suffer the loss.

Stephen must have known he’d get caught.? People who shoot people generally get caught in the UK. Cctv , ANPR, mobile phone signals.

He wasn’t even trying to be discreet. Did he not consider the fact that he’d go to prison for the rest of his life?

His anger towards poor Joshua wasn’t normal was it ?..

I wonder if he’ll kill himself in jail..
