KEEP DANCING

Glad to see some fellow OGers. Twenty (one) years later, still love it and yes Dalgleish for Strictly!

I believe it was a teenage voting. Claire Sweeney, Martin Offiah and Lesley Garrett were miles better but were robbed.

In the final, Chris had 63 out of 120. Natasha had 102.

Usually the point difference between the couples in the final is around 5 between top and bottom!

Oh the writing was so on the wall that first series!

If he had won it would've been up there with Darren Gough for biggest shock winner (even though I voted for DG because I loved his journey and attitude but didn't really think he had a chance).

Ann Widdecombe! Good grief. I can’t even imagine her attempting to dance. The mind boggles.

Even if you google some of her dances you’ll still be trying to imagine her trying to dance. I’m not sure she put her whole self into the enterprise.

Ouch, can't pretend I'm still 19 now 🤦.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 05/10/2025 21:11

Same! I voted for DG and Lilia though a lot of people still feel Colin Jackson was robbed

They do yes, but god knows why after that dancing dolls show dance shambles.

Arlene was fuming over it.

I saw bits and bobs of the first series, Mum was watching it when Dad and I got back from football if the journey length matched getting to theirs but as a sports fan it was definitely Darren Gough that got me completely hooked. I just couldn't equate his falling in love with dance with the rough tough manly Yorkshire man I'd seen at Lords.

Week 2 has got to be a record for a mention of Dummy-Gate 😜

Mokel · 05/10/2025 21:14

I do wish the BBC would stop playing this idea that the results show is live.

Next week, it’s Movie Week. Many pros and celebrities spend ages having make up, hairpieces fitted and the odd prosthetic nose etc. They are not going to spend that time again having these things done on Sunday.

Sunday is the day where the couples have a day off. The results from the spoiler pages comes up about 11pm. By the time they get changed back into their normal clothes, go home, hotel, Airbnb etc it’s like 1am.

I remember Len being less than impressed, but he really favoured Darren, I think saw something of himself there.

Len always loved a trier. Much like Anton now.

Even though I love all the judges, I do miss Len and his pickled walnuts.

Colin was objectively a better dancer (and another of my many sporting idols but my god the puppets were hmmmm) but Darren Gough has the patent on the journey narrative. It was a thing of joy to watch him fall in love with dance. It's why ringers will never cut it for me, they know the joy of dancing, it's watching someone discover that joy that gets me ever time.

Mokel · 05/10/2025 21:22

Brucie loved saying “you are my favourite” to the ones that were trying their best

The only time I’ve ever been cross over a journey contestant winning is Chris Hollins. He didn’t deserve it and his Charleston was shit.

Happy with the results I thought Ross might be in the bottom two but otherwise fairly predictable.
Amy’s farewell speech was a bit much, it’s only week 2!

I can't remember who I voted for that year - it sure as shit wasn't Chris. I think I must have wiped it from my mind!

derxa · 05/10/2025 21:31

I’m sure that it was fair enough for Tom to go. He couldn’t dance. On the other hand I have absolutely no interest in Amber.

That was the barometer for who was the most rubbish.

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit Will I be asked to leave the thread if I admit that I quite liked CH's charleston? Sorry not sorry.

Chris Parker must win the award for unbelievably shit dancer who went a very long way. I seem to recall Craig being increasingly infuriated.

JudybMurray was pretty dreadful and she hung around for ages. She was a lovely lovely woman but Anton may as well have been dancing with a plank of wood.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 05/10/2025 21:55

Ooo that’s a tricky one @AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta I’ll let you off if you didn’t vote for him.

My other Winner BugBear is that Ringiest Of Ringers Tom Chambers mainly because he had such a Smug Face

Phew, I definitely didn't do that. His charleston is his only dance I remember. Which possibly speaks volumes.

I disliked Tom Chambers intently because of the smugness that radiated off him. I think that's the only final I've never watched in protest because #AustinWasRobbed.

Yep - I assume Judy's problem was nerves - I think she just went stiff with fear on the night.

I know someone who knew an early boot, they said their problem was they were a perfectionist who would spend hours on the very basic technique trying to get it right rather than learning the whole routine at a fairly crappy level they trying to finesse it as much as they could so come the live show they had barely touched the second half of the dance and didn't know it at all. Which meant a) they forgot the steps b) the worry about no knowing the routine meant nerves made the technique they had obsessed about in training went out the window anyway.
