I’m sorry if there’s already a thread. I couldn’t see one.
just started this today. Am hooked already.
perfect cold night in thriller.
Without giving too much away, Toni Collete is fucking terrifying in this (to me).

slightly off topic: does she ever put a foot wrong? Since the days of Muriel (‘Mariel’) , she seems to have been unfailingly brilliant.
not sure I’ve seen everything she’s done so open to recommendations.

there was a thread recently about ubiquitous faces and it can be so urgh when you see the same names over and over, particularly British ex soap stars turned household names in every drama series going, or typecast movie stars who play the same character in every production but TC does seem to have a genuine and broad spectrum talent.

He’s been in loads @treesandsun. Personally I’ve noticed he’d been in the US version of The Killing which I watched years ago but I guess it depends on what you’ve watched.

it's a specific programme that I'm thinking of but I can't think what it is. I watch a lot of crime fiction I googled him and loads of things came up and I've seen them but none of them are the thing that I was thinking of.

Mae martins pronouns are They/Them. Stop referring to them as she. Their character uses he/him pronouns so there's no excuse. Use he/him or they/them or be quiet

Mae Martin is female. When I talk about a female I use the pronoun SHE. I don’t care what Mae refers to herself as. I don’t police her language and I don’t expect her - or you - to police mine.

I will refer to her in any way I please.
HTH.

It's not just the characters living in the town's reaction to calling Alex. When Leila ran into Alex in town Leila called Alex queer. Later, when Leila and Abbie saw Alex on the CCTV Leila referred to Alex as he. No teens were talking like that in 2003! The whole script just feels off because we're meant to believe it was set in 2003 (why?) but everyone talks like the best kind of woke people in 2025.

In the sex scene I also wondered how the audience were meant to interpret what Laura was doing to Alex while 'he' laid on his front. Alex is a 'man' so where was Laura's hand going?

I assumed it was some sort of bum play burqas hard to ascertain due to their angles. Again, if you watched The Room or The Disaster Artist, you would see improbable sex scenes where the positioning just doesn’t make any sense

Mae is non binary and use the pronoun they.

All you have to do is Google.

Non binary is a type of trans.

I am enjoying it but Mae Martin's writing around the trans issue is anachronistic. In 2003 nobody in small town America would refer to two females as husband and wife. Even if they were asked to - it just wasn't part of the cultural lexicon. Even two women without a trans identity wouldn't have been referred to as married because gay marriage wasn't legal. Then we have the teenage runaway who 'knows' to use male pronouns for Alex although Alex never said she identifies as a man. Finally the gay friend they meet at the market refers to Laura as a pregnant person, not woman. Again, 2003. It might only have been 22 years ago but people seem to forget that trans issues were simply not discussed outside of very small trans circles and nobody would have used a phrase like pregnant person!!

Mae sort of made it look like it was meant to be comedic at times, very stunted range, mainly wide eyed surprise but for some reason I still enjoyed their part in it.
looked like possibly Botox was impacting facial expressions, every emotion seemed eye based .
Toni Collette was a different class altogether.
and Stacey. Whoah, reminded me of sissy spacek. Horrendous

Stacey was incredible. The acting was another level, made me feel deeply uncomfortable. I hope she’s got a long career ahead of her!

Of course she's trans, she just had top surgery.

Mae Martin is non-binary. Goes by the pronouns of they/them.

On the back of this thread we've just rented Hereditary - SAVE YOUR MONEY, it's absolutely shite, laughably so !

You have to admit that scene in the middle on the road with the head out the window (trying not to give spoilers) was good though, right?

Are we ok to discuss spoilers at this stage?

Because I want to discuss Evelyn’s fall-out with her parents.

She said it was because she was pregnant and they wouldn’t let her keep the baby, but she didn’t say what happened. Did anyone else expect a reveal of Laura as Evelyn’s daughter? I thought that would make sense and account for why Evelyn was so focused on Laura. Assuming the baby was biologically Laura’s, it’d be the grandchild of the founding members of the cult so a good “first” baby to have in the community.

Now, that doesn’t account for the fact that the baby seemed to be about four months old when it was born. Biggest and most alert newborn ever.

Oooooh this is interesting. It would have raised the story to the next level if they’d done this. I wish they had.

I did think at some point there was going to be a twist that Alex was a former student and a leap had completely erased his memory. I thought that might be interesting, as I was pondering why the town would have let an outsider in with no connections.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I do think there was potential there to go deeper (like with your suggestion) emotionally, and there were a lot of unanswered questions at the end. Maybe there will be a second series.

I’ve seen a lot of comments here and on other forums about Mae’s acting, but I thought it fit the character well.

Woompund · 02/10/2025 09:02

Erm...no?

compellled speech is always fun. Not.
Despite the mental gymnastics around using the word queer at a time when it wasn’t and referring to obvious females as he/him at a time when that wasn’t a thing, I found Mae Martins character very likeable. But then Mae Martin wrote it, so it makes sense to write the character that way.

Tontostitis · 02/10/2025 09:28

I really like mae's acting I felt for Alex he seemed more real than anyone else in the town and that became clearer with each episode. I came on here expecting everyone to be blown away by how good this series was we binged it in 2 days.

Absentosaur · 02/10/2025 09:43

LoafofSellotape · 27/09/2025 11:06

Oh she's awful and a very odd scene later on in the series which seemed totally unnecessary and just an opportunity to show off her new surgery. Shame as the rest of it was great. I binged the lot in a couple of days!

Yes absolutely. I fast forwarded that truly dreadful awkward scene. Added nothing to the story and was blatant self promotion for her and the fact she has had her tits lopped off (fuck the ridiculous gender woo word manipulation of ‘top surgery’), to look more like a man.

Was an interesting show with some good acting and storylines. But it lost its way due to self/indulgence of the writer / main actor.

I agree it was clear from the beginning this was a trans man with a pregnant wife. Never mentioned who the biological father was afair.

Started off 9/10. Ended up 2/10 I’m afraid.

rriffraff · 02/10/2025 10:31

(spoiler alert if you haven't watched)

It started off well and was quite cohesive for the first couple of episodes but more and more dead bodies piled in until it became a bit cartoonish by the end of the series.
The narrative got more and more action led and oh now everyone is not only a murderer but a mass murderer with no consequence and hardly any point to it.

It seems particularly difficult to be a male in the village, as you might get murdered by the school mistress, impaled by a girl in your class or killed by the 30 year old aggressive transman half your size.
Maybe it's revenge for all the year's that we have had to watch women hunted down and killed by men in movies or Mae Martin's view on men is a bit cliche'd - that to be male you have to be violent and punch someone in the face until they are dead.

Lottapianos · 02/10/2025 16:54

I agree that it started well, but I got fed up after 6 episodes and bailed out.

The sex scene was awful - odf and unnecessary

PuppyMonkey · 02/10/2025 17:09

I agree it completely lost the plot towards the end. The last episode was very disappointing - looks like it was just setting up the possibility of a second season.

Hadn’t heard of Mae Martin but the character was totally unconvincing and pretty much a waste of time. Loved Toni and the actress playing Lyla though.

Bobbieiris · 02/10/2025 20:43

I’m on episode 2 and not sure….its very young adult/teen show at the moment (and not in a good way like stranger things). I’m hoping it gets better!

Wow. You can’t just police people’s language and insist they stfu! Female pronouns are the obvious choice there whether you like it or not.

I loved this series. I even enjoyed the trans dynamic albeit agree the sex was cringe and the couple were miscast and inauthentic - the pregnant wife looked far older than the police ‘person’ (happy now?) and there was no chemistry.

The younger actors were fantastic and I thought the plot and back stories were good. My only question was about the ‘mother back against the door’ imagery and ‘door in her mouth’ - was that due to the psychedelics? It made no sense.

Italiangreyhound · 02/10/2025 22:00

I love it.

It's brilliant.

It's giving me 'Stranger things' vibes.

Mae Martin is brilliant.

This is loosely based on real events.

How far in are you?

Well there are documentaries about the hideous schools used to take crazy teens in the US. Paris Hilton was put in one apparently. There not the same as this story though. A bit like camps they have in America to make people not be gay. Much more interesting (though thoroughly depressing) watch than this good at the beginning atrocious towards the end made up bonkers series.

treesandsun I also think the fellow cop looks familiar.v

Episode 3 with the group session where they all start making dog noises is very scary.

It reminds me of the Cultural Revolution where they had publicly denounced neighbours or friends. Or in 1984 where Winston Smith breaks down and says he loves Bog Brother. Scary stuff.
