I’m sorry if there’s already a thread. I couldn’t see one.
just started this today. Am hooked already.
perfect cold night in thriller.
Without giving too much away, Toni Collete is fucking terrifying in this (to me).

slightly off topic: does she ever put a foot wrong? Since the days of Muriel (‘Mariel’) , she seems to have been unfailingly brilliant.
not sure I’ve seen everything she’s done so open to recommendations.

there was a thread recently about ubiquitous faces and it can be so urgh when you see the same names over and over, particularly British ex soap stars turned household names in every drama series going, or typecast movie stars who play the same character in every production but TC does seem to have a genuine and broad spectrum talent.

Mae Martin isn't trans. The role is trans.

The world is hardly full of over privileged trans actors, elbowing everyone out of the way.

Edited

Of course she's trans, she just had top surgery.

@Charredtea Apparently one of Toni Collette’s best performances is in Hereditary. She was very good in Unbelievable on Netflix too.

Edited

On the back of this thread we've just rented Hereditary - SAVE YOUR MONEY, it's absolutely shite, laughably so !

Mae is non binary and use the pronoun they.

All you have to do is Google.

Good Lord 🙄

Good Lord all you like.

It'd be nice to discuss the actual programme.

My apologies I haven’t even seen it just heard it and her performance in it raved about, sorry it sucked

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 28/09/2025 22:06

Tried watching it earlier and the acting of the trans actress put me off. She’s awful, like a cardboard cut out, no talent.

It’s a pity, the idea of the show seemed good and the rest of the cast was decent.

I guess you can act however you like when it’s your show.
Slightly OT but relevant:
has anyone here seen The Room or The Disaster Artist?

She’s playing a trans man, has had top surgery, used to identify as lesbian and now identifies as bi and is non binary.

with all the above no wonder anyone is confused ^^

Piggywaspushed · 28/09/2025 22:19

Or we could just concentrate on the character...

bluevalley · 29/09/2025 02:48

I enoyed it, and also had no problems with Mae's acting which fit the role. On IMDb there are loads of posters crossly asking how did Laura get pregnant then?!

Tontostitis · 29/09/2025 06:20

Alex is a trans man but still has all the female insides. I assumed/head cannoned that they used an egg from Alex, sperm from a donor and Laura carries the baby. That's what I'd do as then it's both parents child. I also think 'the leap' maybe sterilises the kids that way Evelyn ensures her no kids policy. Can't wait for a second series fingers crossed 🤞. My husband and I keep saying 'and another thing'.

Mae has spoken about having top surgery and also taking low dose testosterone. That seems more like trans man territory than NB

opencecilgee · 29/09/2025 11:40

Somebody said pregnant people in a scene

was the world really this trans friendly back in 2003? especially the police

gender issues aside, this is not Toni C’s best work. i mean, she’s great but this is kind of bullshit

opencecilgee · 29/09/2025 11:43

LoafofSellotape · 28/09/2025 21:05

My mistake. She got the role because she wrote this rubbish

AllyxCat · 29/09/2025 12:17

I thought the casting of Mae Martin as Alex was just terrible when I first saw the episode I thought she was playing the part of a young boy she looked like she was the son and dressed as a deputy omg !!! Dreadful

I think the point tis the world wasn't like that in 2003 - so it's the first sign that there is something a bit 'off' about the town. It seems 'too' accepting. I noticed that from the off.

Whether the world is like this now is up for debate...

ComfortablySeated · 29/09/2025 14:23

Are we ok to discuss spoilers at this stage?

Because I want to discuss Evelyn’s fall-out with her parents.

She said it was because she was pregnant and they wouldn’t let her keep the baby, but she didn’t say what happened. Did anyone else expect a reveal of Laura as Evelyn’s daughter? I thought that would make sense and account for why Evelyn was so focused on Laura. Assuming the baby was biologically Laura’s, it’d be the grandchild of the founding members of the cult so a good “first” baby to have in the community.

Now, that doesn’t account for the fact that the baby seemed to be about four months old when it was born. Biggest and most alert newborn ever.

smalldogdancing · 29/09/2025 19:31

Enjoyed it a lot but also found Mae Martin difficult to make sense of in the role. I thought in the first episode it was a mum and son moving and then they kissed.

Oh god same. It’s probably not helped by the actress playing his wife looks (to me) much older than she is. And Mae looks about 14. Never heard of Mae before but clocked quickly that wasn’t a male actor. If the actual acting had been better i wouldn’t Really care but not the best actor for sure.

smalldogdancing · 29/09/2025 20:35

Yeah not fussed about the trans thing, they just didn’t look like they were in a relationship

FanofLeaves · 29/09/2025 20:52

I didn’t find MM that bad in the role at all! To be honest most of how they played it was totally believable for the character - overwhelmed, confused and trying to make sense of the situation. I actually thought their comedic skills came across in certain scenes where they played things completely deadpan in the face of a ludicrous situation. I don’t give a fuck how they identify because i was immersed in the show, which was very good.

Really liked the girl who played Lilah. Very reminiscent of a young Evan Rachel Wood in the film 13 if anyone’s ever seen that.

purpleme12 · 29/09/2025 21:03

That film is brilliant
