I love this series, one of my all time favourites and a new series starts on Thursday. Lovely feel good tv, and a real sign of Autumn when a new one lands.

Anyone else?

Yes, they do prefer him, because he's Scottish. Also their Dad was very particular about his appearance, and this James is always very neat. Linked to this, the hair people have brylcreemed James' hair back, and I think that makes it look a bit darker.

Ahhh that’s why it’s darker, I thought hair dye lol. I’m glad his children prefer this James. I’ve not really seen the original, just 30 minutes or so here and there on BBC4 and I found it very stilted and slow so I much prefer this one

FleurDeFleur · 24/10/2025 11:37

Yes, @JewelleryCat , I think both "Herriot" children were very helpful with this production not just because of their Dad being Scots, but their Mum being a Yorkshire woman! I think probably the production values as well.
I think the original series was beset by various problems, I know what you mean about it being stilted.

I have just read the book written about Alf Wight by his son. Found it very interesting. He was a complex and interesting man. Not Scots at all but from Sunderland. His parents moved to Glasgow when he was young and he was brought up there.

I loved the parrot too! I love ACGAS anyway and it is a good relationship between Jimmy and Siegfried. I’m wondering if it was the same kind of relationship for the real Jim and Siegfried

They did get on well, but 'James' got on better with his younger brother Brian who is Tristan in the show.

They actually lived at Skeldale House because when "Siegfried" remarried, he moved out.

He then bought some land and had a modern house built, as the original building was very draughty , cold and dark.

Yes, am I right in thinking they prefer this James to the original James? Also, was James’s hair dyed or something because to me, it seemed darker

There does seem to be a hint of the Just For Men about it

I can imagine!

Yes, but had the Scots accent for the rest of his life.
He was quite troubled, wasn't he? I think Helen must have been very patient.

Sorry, I meant Jimmy as in the child with Uncle Siegfried

NotMyRealAccount · 30/10/2025 21:59

Sniffle

SirChenjins · 30/10/2025 22:07

Same @NotMyRealAccount I cried through most of it, such a good episode

Was that the last one of the series?

Yes. 6 of 6.🙁

eggandonion · 30/10/2025 22:15

Is there a Christmas special?

Rhubarb01 · 30/10/2025 22:23

The Radio Times states it was the sixth of seven episodes and the seventh appears to be the Christmas special according to Google.

SirChenjins · 30/10/2025 22:25

Really looking forward to the Christmas special 😊

MyOtherProfile · 30/10/2025 22:28

What a lovely end to the series. 6 episodes is far too few IMHO though.

Crummles1 · 30/10/2025 22:30

Nooo! 6 episodes is/are not enough

SirChenjins · 30/10/2025 22:35

No way are 6 enough! I'm also still holding out for Audrey and Siegfried getting together and I don't care what anyone says. I definitely got a feeling they were getting closer tonight.

JewelleryCat · 30/10/2025 22:47

I’m watching on plus 1 but I just want to hug Tristan

FleurDeFleur · 31/10/2025 08:30

What a beautiful episode. Tears and hope.
I loved little Jimmy in his brown coat! So cute. The Yorkshire countryside is shown to stunning effect.
What a lovely final scene, with all the beacons.

JewelleryCat · 31/10/2025 08:47

I did have tears in my eyes with the brass band and the beacons. I hope there’s a Christmas special

Yes, me too. It was genuinely very touching.

It was probably a real brass band as well. I think Yorkshire has quite a few around in the villages. Not as many as there used to be

FleurDeFleur · 31/10/2025 09:02

Yes, it was a real brass band, such a glorious sound.
