In a long awaited return to British television, ITV (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/a64348705/gemma-arterton-secret-service-itv-drama/) have scored award-winning actor Andrew Lincoln to lead in upcoming thriller, Coldwater.

Alongside Ewen Bremner, Indira Varma (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/a64475507/the-night-manager-season-2-release-date-cast-plot/)and Eve Myles, the six-part series is written by celebrated playwright David Ireland and, if recently-released first look images are anything to go by, is guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat.

The series (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/g31986791/best-tv-shows/) centres around John (Lincoln) and the unfolding of an unlikely relationship when he moves up to the fictional village of Coldwater in rural Scotland.

Exploring themes of masculinity and religion, the thriller blends dark humour with compelling characters.

What is the plot of Coldwater?

After witnessing a fiery confrontation in a local playground, stay-at-home dad John relocates from London as far away as possible up to Coldwater in Scotland.

Amidst his mid-life identity crisis, John befriends his mysterious next door neighbour, Tommy (Ewen Bremner). A friendly face and valued resident in Coldwater.

Tommy is a relic of the community; he is the leader of the all-male book group and married to Rebecca, the local vicar (Eve Myles).

Whilst John is totally enthralled by Tommy, his wife Fiona (Indira Varma) is completely unsettled by him.

As Fiona strives to add some spark back into her marriage and her career, she is wary of John and Tommy’s bond.

Fiona’s suspicions are correct, as underneath his charming exterior, Tommy is the neighbour from hell.

As his mask starts to slip, his shocking secrets come to the surface, and John starts to question Tommy’s motives whilst he grapples with his own personal struggles.

The official synopsis reads: “This is the story of a normal man, in a normal marriage, who finds himself in a far from normal situation. A man who discovers a newfound sense of his own power, right at the moment he falls under the influence of someone incredibly dangerous.”

Who is the Cast and Crew of Coldwater?
• Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead, Love Actually, Teachers) plays John
• Ewen Bremner (Our Flag Means Death, Trainspotting) plays Tommy
• Indira Varma (Obsession, Obi-Wan Kenobi) plays Fiona
• Eve Myles (Hijack, Keeping Faith) plays Rebecca

Jesus this is one of the worst things I've seen in a very long time....

GeorgeSmiley1969 · 16/09/2025 21:00

This is such mind bogglingly awful tripe that it is compulsive viewing. The characters are all have zero credibility.

Have actually binged watched the whole lot while doing other things at the same time. None of the characters ever says or does anything interesting nor are there any twists in the plot so "watching" it doesn't require much effort or concentration.

moto748e · 16/09/2025 21:56

Frankly I think it's pretty rude to come on a "No Spoilers" thread, and say, I watched it all, and it was rubbish. Do you think anyone wants to hear that? There's usually a spoilers thread where you can give your opinions.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/09/2025 22:16

Thanks for that @GeorgeSmiley1969- can I remind you title is no spoilers !!!

I gave up before the end of E1. So disappointing as I wanted to like it, but the characters are very hard to believe.

Edited

TBF that poster didn’t post any spoilers, just their opinion that they found it dull and didn’t like it.

It's grating on me how they say 'play park' for playground

FurForksSake · 16/09/2025 22:56

Is play park unusual? We have three parks where I am, the little, the big and the new park. I’d probably call them play parks as a playground is what they play in at lunch at school.

I've never personally heard anyone say play park

purpleme12 · 16/09/2025 23:38

The whole programme makes me feel really really uncomfortable to be honest

purpleme12 · 16/09/2025 23:38

And the cat bit was just awful

I don't know whether I want to watch any more

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2025 04:08

A ‘ play park ‘ is clearly a children’s playground that identifies as something a bit more upmarket ! Lol

Gloriia · 17/09/2025 07:13

I kind of like how weird it is. Episode 2 was better than 1. As a pp said its all a bit Royston Vasey or inside No 9 isn't it. Getting drunk in the pub whist Tommy glowered in the corner, the run home and getting a lift from an oap.

Cameron seems the only normal one in it.

It's weird, and they're all batshit but I'll stick with it I think.

PrincessScarlett · 17/09/2025 08:21

@Gloriia oh no, I think Cameron is just as strange. There's definitely a weird vibe between him and Tommy.

lazymum99 · 17/09/2025 09:22

I think play park is American terminology. Never heard it used in the UK

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2025 10:10

I’m finding it intriguing. Eve Myles is very good in this.

lazymum99 · 17/09/2025 10:16

She is good. I am finding it an interesting and different watch. It is quite uncomfortable viewing but I think some people are taking it too literally.

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2025 10:18

It is like ‘ the wicker man ‘ film ( the original one! ) edgy and a bit different

BoilingHotand50something · 17/09/2025 22:43

I think play park is how they are referred to in Scotland actually.

ozarina · 18/09/2025 17:19

Read main reviews online..noone seemed to like it!
Indira ( Fiona) was on Lorraine ITV this morning.
I think ' comedy' idea may stem from 3 actors being well known from the hit BBC Scotland comedies Still Game and Two Doors Down. Colin ( Jonathan Watson) plays the therapist Williams here 😂
I've now watched all 6 episodes and it was quite a ride! Unsure if it was a good idea or not.

Yes that is so bizarre when you are used to them in other things! Naveed there too 😂😂

the80sweregreat · 18/09/2025 17:35

I’m in the minority as I like it.
Lots of criticism on Facebook though

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/09/2025 20:55

I like it as well @the80sweregreat

you and I have similar tastes
