In a long awaited return to British television, ITV (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/a64348705/gemma-arterton-secret-service-itv-drama/) have scored award-winning actor Andrew Lincoln to lead in upcoming thriller, Coldwater.

Alongside Ewen Bremner, Indira Varma (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/a64475507/the-night-manager-season-2-release-date-cast-plot/)and Eve Myles, the six-part series is written by celebrated playwright David Ireland and, if recently-released first look images are anything to go by, is guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat.

The series (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/g31986791/best-tv-shows/) centres around John (Lincoln) and the unfolding of an unlikely relationship when he moves up to the fictional village of Coldwater in rural Scotland.

Exploring themes of masculinity and religion, the thriller blends dark humour with compelling characters.

What is the plot of Coldwater?

After witnessing a fiery confrontation in a local playground, stay-at-home dad John relocates from London as far away as possible up to Coldwater in Scotland.

Amidst his mid-life identity crisis, John befriends his mysterious next door neighbour, Tommy (Ewen Bremner). A friendly face and valued resident in Coldwater.

Tommy is a relic of the community; he is the leader of the all-male book group and married to Rebecca, the local vicar (Eve Myles).

Whilst John is totally enthralled by Tommy, his wife Fiona (Indira Varma) is completely unsettled by him.

As Fiona strives to add some spark back into her marriage and her career, she is wary of John and Tommy’s bond.

Fiona’s suspicions are correct, as underneath his charming exterior, Tommy is the neighbour from hell.

As his mask starts to slip, his shocking secrets come to the surface, and John starts to question Tommy’s motives whilst he grapples with his own personal struggles.

The official synopsis reads: “This is the story of a normal man, in a normal marriage, who finds himself in a far from normal situation. A man who discovers a newfound sense of his own power, right at the moment he falls under the influence of someone incredibly dangerous.”

Who is the Cast and Crew of Coldwater?
• Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead, Love Actually, Teachers) plays John
• Ewen Bremner (Our Flag Means Death, Trainspotting) plays Tommy
• Indira Varma (Obsession, Obi-Wan Kenobi) plays Fiona
• Eve Myles (Hijack, Keeping Faith) plays Rebecca

Rebecca looked just as sinister as Tommy there at the end 😱

Its completely barking

ITV already getting complaints on Twitter about the cat scene

I think David Tennant has been in something with a similar title.

Got a feeling it was about a small community with buried secrets.

Deadwater Fell?

Yes,I watched Deadwater Fell quite a while ago. From what I've seen so far, (episodes 1,2 and 3) I think Coldwater is MUCH better than that though!

I'm not surprised. It really upset me,as a soppy cat lover.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/09/2025 22:25

The cat is ok

Just finished the second episode. It's all completely bonkers but I am enjoying it, and it was quite darkly comic tonight. Glad Harlequin lived, I'm feeling very sorry for Cameron and little Harry.

Donttellempike · 15/09/2025 22:30

In case we didn’t get the message that Tommy is a psycho killer. Let’s have him torture a defenceless cat.

Dear me. Sledgehammer messaging 😽

SabrinaThwaite · 15/09/2025 22:32

I think the (all too grim) cat scene is to demonstrate that Tommy is a full on psychopath.

And that his wife (vicar / minister) knows.

PrincessScarlett · 15/09/2025 23:12

I am finding this utterly intriguing. As a previous poster said, all the characters are really unlikeable. And yet brilliant.

I wonder where Katrina fits into all of this? She was flirting with John and inviting him back to hers (presumably on the say so of Tommy) and then she couldn't stand John in the morning. Was it because she didn't get the evidence Tommy wanted of John cheating or that she is being used by Tommy? Or both?

I reckon Tommy must have dirt on everyone in the village. The scene in the pub where he was stone cold sober (but pretending the apple juice was whiskey) and watching his bible club all off their faces was really chilling.

diddl · 16/09/2025 08:59

I think for me Tommy was so obviously a psychopath from the off.

It wasn't subtle enough.

Clawdy · 16/09/2025 09:18

Yes, I agree, not subtle. That leering grin, his smirks - it would be more interesting if we weren't sure he was a villain.

FurForksSake · 16/09/2025 10:24

I’m very much hoping for a twist that he’s a psychopath but actually the minister wife is the one to fear… or something.

Yes, I couldn't believe Katrina flirting with John. Fifteen old years older, not to mentioned, shit-faced, and pretty weird to boot. So yeah, I imagine that's the mailgn hand of Tommy, somehow.

the80sweregreat · 16/09/2025 10:59

Yes. Poor cat;(
lots of mentions of Brady and Hindley
maybe the vicar and Tommy are actually Suzanne’s killer ?

Yes I'm thinking the twist might be Rebecca is the psycho as she showed a glimpse at the end last night and Tommy is so obviously acting the psycho.

PrincessScarlett · 16/09/2025 12:11

It was mentioned last night that Tommy and Rebecca have a daughter that moved away. I wonder if there is more to that as why mention it otherwise?

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/09/2025 12:16

I missed the apply juice was pretending whiskey

but yes he was sober

I said Tommy killed susie in e1

I didn't think there was any humour in it till this episode .John getting smashed at the pub, running across the fields to get to Tommy's house, asking for a lift from an unknown woman and Tommy throwing water over him so it looked like he'd had a shower . Dark comedy !!

Not sure what Fiona's up to, but I don't think she's as nice as she likes to come across .

RosaMoline · 16/09/2025 17:33

The only bit I laughed at was when Catriona took this piss out of John’s grey pubes.
I too wish that animal cruelty hadn’t been featured. That poor, beautiful stag, and lovely Harlequin.
I know that John didn’t kill the stag, but if he was my DP I would’ve have immediately LTB for being (in)directly involved. There would’ve been no going back on that for me, in addition to his lack of calling 999 and helping that lady in the park, instead of being just another weak man.

moto748e · 16/09/2025 18:07

Back in the real world, I assume shooting stags is illegal, and would have certainly attracted some attention in a small rural community? But this is TVland, of course.

FurForksSake · 16/09/2025 18:14

Why would shooting a stag be illegal? Culling deer is absolutely necessary for their own wellbeing as there are no apex predators to control their numbers. As long as it is open season, they’ve got gun licenses and permission of the landowner.
