New 5 part drama

Will it beat Pauline behind the curtain 😂😂😂

Joanna moves to the quiet town of Flinstead with her young son, Alfie – a fresh start in a place that promises peace.

But beneath its quiet surface lies something more sinister.

When she discovers a chilling rumour about a convicted child killer hiding in plain sight, Joanna seizes the chance to bond with the local mums by sharing it – unknowingly unleashing a wave of paranoia and suspicion.

As whispers grow louder and tensions rise, Joanna is swept into a dangerous spiral of secrets and blame.

With trust eroding and fear spreading like wildfire, she begins to question not only the town’s past but her own instincts. Who can she trust?

And what will it cost her to find the truth?

The story is based on the Sunday Times bestselling book by Lesley Kara,

The cast of The Rumour includes Rachel Shenton (All Creatures Great and Small, For Her Sins, The Strangers Part 1 & Part 2) who stars as Joanna – a mother desperate to outrun her past and protect her future. Also joining the cast is Joanne Whalley (Willow, Wolf Hall, Scandal), Emily Atack (Rivals), Samuel Anderson (Doctor Who, Amandaland), Ellie Haddington (Enola Holmes, Motherland), Lucy Speed (Unforgotten, Afterlife), Liza Sadovy (A Real Pain, Patience, A Small Light) and Carryl Thomas (Emmerdale, Silo, Silent Witness, Eastenders). Rounding out the ensemble cast are Tamzin Griffin, Alex Waldmann and Okezie Morro.

On wed Thur Fri and then not till next week

Why would someone video the killing/“confession”?

JellyStarz · 18/09/2025 21:33

Are child murderers allowed to keep sole care of their babies?! Wouldn't there have been heavy SS involvement at every location if so?

I know, I know, its just a TV drama!!

JellyStarz · 18/09/2025 21:34

LIZS · 18/09/2025 21:21

Why would someone video the killing/“confession”?

Well I thought to frame someone and clear the real Sally M from suspicion. But now, perhaps not!

LIZS · 18/09/2025 21:42

And why not delete it knowing they were wrong?

JellyStarz · 18/09/2025 21:47

Perhaps she was about to, as she made the call to Bea

purpleme12 · 18/09/2025 21:50

I missed what was in the video on the phone and who, and who held the phone

Can someone explain?

JellyStarz · 18/09/2025 21:56

Quick prediction, Bea still alive but framed as died in fire...

First murder set up as suicide. We only saw the hand holding it.

purpleme12 · 18/09/2025 22:00

I think we knew it was set up as suicide though didn't we

LIZS · 18/09/2025 22:26

Exactly, so it seemed a bit pointless to show it and unlikely the killer would keep it as a reminder. Are we supposed to think her dreams were premonitions? And who planted the rumour on the website, assuming it was ever there, the killer?

JellyStarz · 19/09/2025 08:00

Yes the killer I believe.

I can't work out how we are supposed to feel about Bea. Her confession to camera was cold and didn't appear to be forced to embellish it, maybe once she saw Joanna but as Joanna crept it there was no incentive to lie.

And now they believe Sally McGowan died in the fire, they know its either the Mum or partner that were Sally M so now Joanna and Alfie will need to live in hiding for life too.

Really enjoyed the show but lots of unexplained loose ends I expected to be tied up.

autienotnaughty · 19/09/2025 12:49

End was a bit over the top. The book was a lot better.
How did Rachel figure out who it was? And why was Joanna sure it was her mum based on a signature? I can’t say I’d recognise anyone’s signature particularly of a different name!

Friendlygingercat · 19/09/2025 13:05

Why does Joanna have a male child who looks and dresses like a girl? Log hair in a ponytail! It was episode 2 before I realised it was supposed to be a boy. No wonder s/he was bullied at his/her last school.

Meredusoleil · 19/09/2025 13:39

What I still don't get is WHY the mum killed that boy? What was the reason? Am watching the final episode now and hoping it is explained 🤞

Meredusoleil · 19/09/2025 14:29

Just finished it.

Still don't understand what Bea's motive for the murder was. How old was she at the time? Just a child herself, no?

What happened to Rachel? Did she die in the fire?

It was all so messed up tbh!

butterpuffed · 19/09/2025 15:29

So, we're meant to make up the ending ourselves.

Some of them lived happily ever after 😨

purpleme12 · 19/09/2025 15:36

I think the ending was done fine

MouseCheese87 · 19/09/2025 15:59

I thought this series was boring. I normally like this sort of thing but it didn't hold my attention at all and it was obvious who Sally McGowan was from the start. I did persevere but wasn't really that bothered.

The mum was just a child killer , very similar to Mary Bell.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/09/2025 21:40

Right finally seen

hmmmm. So the sister did it tho how the hell did she know it was Bea

or was it as she was a prison officer so had data she wouldn’t normally be privy to

so yes now they now her mum was the killer but think she’s dead

Joanna made up with hubby and moved ?

queen bee finally kicked cheating bloke out and assume didn’t get with her friend

havnt a clue why Bea did it

and more to the point how she kept her child

OP posts:
LIZS · 19/09/2025 21:47

Yes she had joined the prison service in the hope of finding out information from other guards and inmates, and eventually got a lead. She felt a poor substitute for her brother. Not sure why she chose to abandon her own daughter at the hospital though.

itsgettingweird · 20/09/2025 10:24

Yes my understanding was she was born - not sure if after the murder - but was considered a substitute and never real to her brother. Sought out Sally for revenge for this

I’m guessing Bea is alive after the final scene but Rachel died in the fire?

I'm assuming Jo/Lucy doesn’t know her mum’s still alive?

Her and her DH loved away together?

So many answers which created more questions.

But seems Jo was in with mums at the end and the affair mum was out.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/09/2025 11:58

Maybe they thought Rachel was Sally ? Tho age wise wouldn’t work

LeticiaMorales · 22/09/2025 20:55

I also thought Alfie was a little girl, I thought maybe her name was Alfre. Cute child, though I do wonder about children in these dramas with strong themes, but I guess they're well protected. His mum plays Fatima, so at least she's on hand.
Like pp I thought it was Bea from the start, because why would you cast Joanne Whalley just for a few lines as someone's mum?
The Budapest setting is a bit strange. It's all so obviously central European. A small UK place would have been less distracting. I kept thinking, "they had to get a UK police car over there!" etc.

Empress13 · 26/09/2025 06:55

just finished watching this. I too thoughtl it was her mum as Joanne Whaley is a big name for such a small part. Where have I seen Michael before ? Was he in a sitcom? I too thought Alfie was a girl tbh and had no idea it wasn’t filmed in UK! she did it because she said she was young and she just lashed out at him bizarre! Agree why wasn’t her child taken off her being a child killer? That wouldn’t have happened IRL it would have been adopted. I thought at first Jo/Lucy was not her child it was all a bit messy and confusing at the end tbh. She should have told Deb that her slimeball
DH was sleeping with Fatima.
