Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks.

I like David Tennant. I’d love to see him on stage. He’s very good at creepy and cruel but he is an actor, dahlings. Got a very soft spot for Casanova, that’s from a good while ago.

the80sweregreat · 16/08/2025 15:58

I don’t mind David T either , I also remember the Casanova and Secret smile where he played a horrible character really well and one where he was a priest or something? Can’t recall the name but had Stanley Tucci in it ( who I do like )

ForTheNightOrTheRestOfTime · 16/08/2025 16:10

Rebel Wilson
Pedro Pascal
Jim Carey
Emma Watson
Daniel Radcliffe
Jennifer Lawrence
Priyanka Chopra
Lily Collins
Eddie Redmayne

Nicole Kidman

I was working an event at the BFI decades ago where I heard a famous director (wouldn't be fair to name him) saying that Nicole was all wrong for a part because she always acts in sotto voce (whispering) and insists on wigs, which always looks very theatrical and unrealistic. Basically since then I've never been able to watch anything she's in without immediately seeing & hearing those two things: wigs & whispering.

Of course, now she's had so much work done on her face that it doesn't move and she looks even more unrealistic in roles than before. But I understand that she has her own Production company that keeps her in work.

FKAT · 16/08/2025 20:45

I think Nicole Kidman - frozen face, Baby Jane wigs, whisper and all - can still act anyone else off the screen. I know this is not a popular view.

When I worked in the biz it was well known that if Keira Knightley or Gemma Arterton were in a film, box office forecasts were immediately marked down.

FKAT · 16/08/2025 20:49

Not quite on topic but I was watching a clip from Mamma Mia the other day and I've never quite understood why Amanda Seyfried is not a bigger star. She's funny, pretty and can sing, dance and act in a lot of different genres. She's like Paltrow but without the obnoxious persona.

Boobyslims · 16/08/2025 20:55

Al Pacino. Can’t bear him, all that ho-ha, it’s Al Pacino

We might not agree on Dame Emma but I am right with you on Kidman. She makes interesting choices too.

coldinsummer · 16/08/2025 21:08

Matt Smith x a billion - I actively avoid anything he is in. Just seen a poster for a film starring Austin Butler… there’s Matt Smith with a Mohican 🤮 - I cant even look at him.

Tom Hanks - mostly when he was in everything, liked him recently in Elvis though.
Meg Ryan
Daniel Mays
Bradley Cooper
Daniel Radcliffe
Kristen Stewart
Tilda Swinton
Joanne Froggatt
Tom Hiddleston
James Corden - ew ew ew
Pedro Pascal - didn’t like him anyway but his words re JK put the nail in the coffin
David Tennant except in Dr Who
Eddie Redmayne - was gutted when he was cast as Newt Scamander
Keira Knightly - how the hell was she Oscar nominated for being in P&P when she butchered it? Has grown on me more recently with the spy thing on Netflix.

mylovedoesitgood · 16/08/2025 21:12

Nicole Kidman always looks slightly ridiculous, which is distracting, but she is a talented actress. She also does too much TV.

That’s made me think of someone else - one of her co-stars from Big Little Lies - Shailene Woodley, who is the same in everything.

SeasalterSadie · 16/08/2025 21:29

McGann in Call The Midwife-seriously cannot act
Keira Knightley - the teeth!
Nicola Something.. looks like she has a permanent sneer on her face
Tom Cruise - odious little man

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 16/08/2025 22:41

I used to agree about Kristen Stewart but she's been doing some good work over the last few years. I really liked her in Underwater and even more so in Love Lies Bleeding.

DoreenCorkhill · 16/08/2025 23:38

Not keen on Ashley Jensen
Suranne Jones sets my teeth on edge .
Neither are very good actresses in my humble opinion .

DoreenCorkhill · 16/08/2025 23:40

Ditto Sheridan Smith
Oh and David Tennant

RaraRachael · 16/08/2025 23:50

Sally Lindsay. If I see her name in anything it's a complete turn off. The Madame Blanc Mysteries are utter tosh but Love Rat is possibly the worst programme I have seen - complete tripe.

Suzanne Jones seems to play a lot of high powered women parts but I just don't find her believable.
She has one expression like a hard faced disbelieving stare.

I think 'got famous in a wacky sitcom but now has decided to do prime time ITV drama, look serious and win BAFTA' genre produces some of the worst acting: Caroline Quentin, Sheridan Smith, Olivia Colman

I need to rewatch The Favourite again and see how OC's acting holds up. I thought she deserved the Oscar but now I'm questioning it after this thread.

ETA, there are very few British actresses who don't have a 'look at me, I'm ACTING' head girl undertone to every performance. Compare to say Frances McDormand or Viola Davis or Julianne Moore who seem to be a lot more emotionally authentic. Struggling to think of any tbh.

Edited

I love Frances McDormand, Viola Davis & Julianne Moore. They really disappear into the characters on an emotional level. I think what I enjoy about their work is the realism, whereas the problem I have with Nicole Kidman is that you are always very aware that it is Nicole in another very obvious looking wig, trying to deliver a performance and ending up doing the breathy whisper thing.

Tracey Ullman is a genius when it comes to wigs and transformations. She's really got at capturing the essence of a person.

As British actresses go, I think Sally Hawkins is very chameleon-like and massively underrated.

PomegranateVase · 17/08/2025 22:40

Olivia Coleman
Tom Hiddlestone
Maggie Smith
Celia Imrie
Will Ferrell
Matthew McConnaughey
Owen Wilson

HereWeComeAtLast · 18/08/2025 11:00

I'll also add Amanda Holden, appreciate it's probably insulting to all other actresses to put her in the same bracket. She's vacuous and vain and just bloody awful in whatever she's on. Always trying to be younger!

MollyButton · 18/08/2025 12:50

Laurence Fox - really wish he hadn’t been in Lewis but he was so wooden I guess I can pretend he is a cereal packet.
David Tennant is a good baddie (Jessica Jones and that thing where he is supposed to be a nice Scottish Dad)
And Jim Carey was good in Spotless Sunshine

Rebel Wilson is a turn off (can’t think of an exception).

I agree about them, they're very talented. I had the huge pleasure years ago of seeing Tracey Ullman in a play in London and she was as wonderful as I'd hoped.

In an exception to the self-conscious style of acting from the Sheridan Smiths and Olivia Colman's of this world who did a lot of TV work but aren't that great at acting, Sarah Lancashire is someone with a wide range, who continues to thrive and who I find always credible in her roles.

DoreenCorkhill · 17/09/2025 22:16

Eve Myles .

The Grey haired Scottish actor who always plays someone evil and/ or a solicitor or politician. Brian Cox or Peter Capaldi, both of whom I like, or someone else?

Dooray thingy, the rent an actor who is in the Harlan corben films. Dougray Scott? I like him too.

Is the grey haired Scottish actor Mark Bonnar? I really like him.

TheBabyFatmoss · 18/09/2025 08:14

Kristin Scott Thomas, The English Patient would be perfect without her

MinnieCauldwell · 18/09/2025 12:53

Getting a bit tired of Stephan Graham being everywhere. I don't particularly think he is a brilliant actor. I thought Adolescence was over rated, sacrilege I know
