Not sure when this is being released (?) but I’m really looking forward to it. I loved the old BBC series and afaik there’s not really been a remake (besides the films) so this is quite exciting.

The cast has just been released too. What do we all think?

Once upon a time Rufus Sewell would have been lovely as Mr Darcy. I suppose Mr Bennet could have been hot stuff as a young man! I like Jack Lowden.

lovemetomybones · 29/07/2025 22:45

No just no. BBC adaptation is the only one to watch.

zaxxon · 29/07/2025 22:53

Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourg! That'll be fun.

Although I'm not a big fan of Dolly Alderton's writing, so not holding out too much hope.

user2848502016 · 29/07/2025 22:55

I will probably watch it, but nothing can beat the 90s BBC version I don’t think!

FloraBotticelli · 29/07/2025 23:00

Urghh Olivia Coleman. She’s the same in everything.

Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine - great fit.

I can’t picture Emma Corrin as anyone other than Diana at the moment.

BBC diehard fan here though, I was hooked since it was released when I was 10. They’ll never win me over!

mylovedoesitgood · 29/07/2025 23:05

I just think ‘what’s the point?’ when there’s so many terrific adaptations still available to watch. Casting Olivia Colman as Mrs Bennett was a lazy choice.

Still, I like DA’s writing and I’m slightly intrigued to see what she’ll do with the screenplay as in will she modernise the dialogue like the writer of the 2022 Persuasion film did (also for Netflix).

ouch321 · 29/07/2025 23:09

Oh thanks for announcement, will look forward to that.

MeganM3 · 29/07/2025 23:14

I like Dolly Alderton who has adapted it for this series, she’s witty, so I’m going to watch it and hopefully enjoy it! Even though I love the old BBC version. And the film. I like it all. Looks like a good cast too.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 29/07/2025 23:15

Pffft, Emma Corrin?

Insufferable Manic Pixie Dream They. She’s no Lizzie Bennett.

Appalonia · 29/07/2025 23:16

I wish they'd cast Aiden Turner as Mr Darcy, he's got that arrogant, sexy brooding thing going on. I'd watch him in anything tbh!

VibeCurator · 29/07/2025 23:18

I don’t mind Olivia Coleman but I did roll my eyes a bit. She seems to be in everything!

Cant envision Emma Corrin as Elizabeth but maybe she will be good.

Love Jamie Demetriou and Fiona Shaw castings!

I really like Jack Lowden but agree on PP re Aidan Turner he would’ve been perfect. I had no idea this was coming - love the BBC version and rewatch every year. If it’s autumn/ winter time will be something to look forward to

No just no. BBC adaptation is the only one to watch.

Totally agree. Every character spot on. Keira Knightly was ridiculous as Elizabeth. I loved the Mr Collins in the BBC one. He was such a pain!

Pallisers · 29/07/2025 23:24

Can't stand Olivia Coleman

Also can't stand Fiona Shaw - she is so twitchy/mannered in everything on film. I suspect she is better in classical roles on stage ( she was ahead of me in school by a few years)

Emma Corbin does my head in.

I'll watch it anyway :)

VibeCurator · 29/07/2025 23:27

Agree the original BBC series had flawless casting. I have watched it in a long time, I used to have it on DVD. Is it on Iplayer? Can’t believe it’s 30 years old!

I watched the 1990s BBC one while in labour with my son - we brought the video set into the hospital with us.

Our daughters often re-watch it with us. It hasn't aged at all.

I quite liked the 1980 one - but Darcy was so wooden. Eliza was good though.

NewAgeNewMe · 30/07/2025 07:05

Elizabeth Gravie is my favourite Elizabeth Bennett. Though 1990’s version is hard to beat.

BCBird · 30/07/2025 07:20

Massive Jane Austen fan. Been to Bath loads of times for Jane Austen festival and have taken part in the parades- brilliant. Love the BBC adaptation. Do agree in a way, what's the point? Can recommend Persuasion adaptation with Amanda Root- fantastic

KiIIingMeDeftly · 30/07/2025 07:28

On a similar note to Rufus S's casting, the new version of Sense and Sensibility will feature the gorgeous Caitriona Balfe from Outlander... as Mrs Dashwood!

BabyCatFace · 30/07/2025 07:29

Appalonia · 29/07/2025 23:16

I wish they'd cast Aiden Turner as Mr Darcy, he's got that arrogant, sexy brooding thing going on. I'd watch him in anything tbh!

He's way too old!

BabyCatFace · 30/07/2025 07:33

I will watch but nothing can top the 1995 version. However I wouldn't say the casting was perfect - the actors were excellent but all too old and I'm afraid Jane was wooden and plain - not at all how Jane was supposed to be. No shade to the actress who is a perfectly nice looking woman but if you're casting a great beauty you need a great beauty. Rosamunde pike fit the bill looks wise but Keira knightley was a no for Lizzie.

I will reserve judgement. I enjoyed the recent Emma but the recent Persuasion was a joke.

RedRec · 30/07/2025 07:49

What, another one? And Rufus Sewell is still the gorgeous Lord M to me. Mr Bennett, my arse (to quote the great Jim Royle).

MigGril · 30/07/2025 08:01

No just no, why do they keep remaking stuff, let's have more original series like Bridgerton. The original BBC one was so good and so true to the actual book they even took lines from it. I can't see them doing anything better. If they modernised the language I'll cry.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 30/07/2025 08:04

It’ll probably have a soundtrack by Wet Leg.
