Not sure when this is being released (?) but I’m really looking forward to it. I loved the old BBC series and afaik there’s not really been a remake (besides the films) so this is quite exciting.

The cast has just been released too. What do we all think?

I’m going to watch for Rufus. I still have thoughts about him as Charles II. Mm.
Those cheekbones.

Going to watch the 90s and Knightly ones first as a refresher.

Rallentanda · 31/07/2025 11:39

Also a massive fan of the 1995 version, but I loved Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyean as well, it was different but just as good.

I think it's a story that works for every generation to be honest so I'm not surprised to see a new iteration as it seems to be done about every 20 years.

If I had to complain I'd say Jack Lowden is a bit too old, as all the Darcys seem to have been actually. Isn't the book version in his mid 20s? And Emma Corrin doesn't appear to have have the joyful spirit of Jennifer Ehle and Kiera Knightley. Always a bit pinched and watchful. Prepared to be proved wrong by some actual acting if that is available.

I really like Olivia Colman! Think she's done some great things and some mawkish pedestrian British films (she did say she had a large mortgage to pay).

LavenderBlue19 · 31/07/2025 11:51

Looking forward to seeing it, but not convinced by Emma Corrin either - she seems far too serious to play Lizzie. Olivia Coleman is a very obvious casting but I'm sure she'll do it well.

Slightly perturbed that I seriously fancy Mr Bennett, am I really that old? 😂

PestoHoliday · 31/07/2025 11:57

@Rallentanda I agree - lots of people dislike the 2005 film but I love it. It's got its own charm.

Emma Corrin was good as Diana and fine in the House Of Dragons thing, but there certainly isn't zest or humour in evidence. I'm not sure she has the warmth and charisma to be Lizzie.
I'd like to be proven wrong, though.

I liked the Emma Thompson S&S, apart from the fact that she was glaringly too old for the role of Elinor

That's true actually... When I went back and re-read the book, it struck me that it's a very different story when Elinor and Marianne are younger. So the film version is not true to the book in that sense. But I like the way the film plays up Elinor's fear of spinsterhood and a lonely old age - it seems more poignant when she's already on the wrong side of 25.

Or indeed 35…

Emma corrin wasn't in house of the dragons, that's Emma Darcy, another they/them female actor

thatone · 31/07/2025 15:57

I will watch it and see but like so many others the 1995 BBC version is the truest to the book IMO. Someone really should make a decent adaptation of Mansfield Park - have not seen one yet.

deadpan · 31/07/2025 16:10

I don't think they've hit the mark with the actress for EB, they seem to have gone down the Kiera Knightly route and she was awful - she's awful in most things though. Mind you that film was awful. Daryl McCormack will be great as Bingley but to be honest he should have been cast as Darcy. I hope OC doesn't overdo Mrs Bennett like Alison Stedman did, everyone else rang true apart from her. Stath Let's Flats will be fab as Mr Collins though.

I have high hopes for Stath!!

Lol at Alan Tudyk! You're not wrong 😄

Unpopular opinion but I didn't like the Jennifer Ehle version at all. She really ruined it - so smug, and smirking in every scene.

Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility will always be the gold standard for me

Of course she was smug: she was shagging Mr Darcy IRL 🤣

Untailored · 31/07/2025 17:14

I’d keep the BBC one but pinch Mrs Bennett, Jane and Mr Collins from the KK film version.

i loved the Emma Thompson S&S but overall prefer the Hattie Morahan & Charity Wakefield version of S&S.
I also prefer the Romola Garai version of Emma.

I have little enthusiasm for another version of P&P but will no doubt watch. The most recent version of Emma grew on me. Persuasion did not.

Agree about S&S and Emma. I loved the BBC version of P&P but I also loved the one with Keira K. My favourite persuasion is the one with Sally Hawkins, although it grew on me, when I first watched it, I found the camera work dizzying! I also loved the recent Emma film. However, the recent Persuasion film was completely misjudged and absolutely awful. Painful for everyone involved. I hated it and that comes from someone that didn't hate pride and prejudice and zombies 😂

I think Emma Corrin is a wonderful actress and I think they will be amazing. Love Jack L in slow horses so will be fascinating to see how he handles Mr D!

ExitPursuedByABare · 31/07/2025 18:02

Hmmm. Not overjoyed with the Emma Corrin casting.

And not sure we need another adaptation.

I'd love one too, but you can see why not, though. A mousy, shrinking heroine whose only show of character is refusing (a) a sexy suitor and (b) to play the Cottager's Wife in home theatricals, who is exhausted by walking half a mile in summer, and who is in love with a man as dull and unimpeachably virtuous as herself, and where the liveliest and wittiest characters are the wrong'uns...😀

Can't stand Olivia Coleman

Also can't stand Fiona Shaw - she is so twitchy/mannered in everything on film. I suspect she is better in classical roles on stage ( she was ahead of me in school by a few years)

Emma Corbin does my head in.

I'll watch it anyway :)

Agree with all of this.

Olivia Coleman will be unbearable as Mrs Bennett.

And Lizzie Bennett would never bloody bind her breasts nor not know who she was. Sigh.

But I’ll still watch it. If only to complain it’s not a patch on the 90’s version.

Was she really?!? Ok, in that case I'll let her off the hook. Someone should make a dramatisation of the making-of that series, we'd all watch it ...

There was making-of interviews on the original VHS! There are probably copies kicking around on YouTube. I’m sure there’s a bit where Colin Firth said he was supposed to act like he had an errection when he bumped into Lizzie walking to Netherfield to visit Jane!

Jane was wooden and plain - not at all how Jane was supposed to be. No shade to the actress who is a perfectly nice looking woman but if you're casting a great beauty you need a great beauty.

….

but couldn’t get on board with Susannah Harker as the local beauty.

I agree against our modern beauty standards Jennifer Ehle is the more beautiful, but Susannah Harker had very Grecian features which I imagine would have been the more desirable standard in Jane Austen’s time? So I think the casting is probably historically accurate?

I found Susannah Harker perfect in her role.

Emotionalsupporthamster · 31/07/2025 23:43

Not convinced by the Emma Corrin casting either. They were good as Diana but a bit joyless for Elizabeth Bennet, and really it should’ve gone to someone in their early 20s. Didn’t rate them at all in Lady Chatterley’s Lover either. Reserving judgement on Jack Lowden cos I love him but he wouldn’t have been on my list for Darcy.

Aidan Turner would’ve been a magnificent Darcy about 10 years ago.
