Not sure when this is being released (?) but I’m really looking forward to it. I loved the old BBC series and afaik there’s not really been a remake (besides the films) so this is quite exciting.

The cast has just been released too. What do we all think?

Johnny Flynn getting dressed in Emma is one of my top three erotic moments in film.

🥵

Fabulous shoulders.

I will take any Jane Austen adaptation and enjoy it on its merits. I personally love both the 2005 film and 1995 TV show for different reasons. Persuasion is my favourite book and the Amanda Root version is wonderful. Jack Lowden is hot and funny-I’m in!

Amanda Root Persuasion is pure perfection.

Amanda Root Persuasion is pure perfection.

Amanda Root is criminally under-rated and under used. She's amazing in the 2002 Forsyte Saga also.

It’s all wrong for Austen’s Knightley, though (though that’s on the screenwriter and director, not JF) — he’s an unusually self-reliant, low-key landowner, who walks everywhere, doesn’t stand on ceremony or keep lots of servants, and is scathing about Frank Churchill going to London for a haircut. The house is far too fancy for Donwell, Knightley wouldn’t have had a valet, far less stripped walking through his house and let other people pick up his discarded clothing! That’s more Louis XIV than Mr Knightley.

He'd ridden home and he was washing and changing before he strode off towards the Woodhouse abode. He was in his bedroom or dressing room.

In a later scene, he took his waistcoat off, but I didn't see him take off anything else then. I didn't hear him demand that any servant pick up the weskit.

Neither scene was written by JA. They were in the same category as Andrew Davies's fencing scene and swimming-in-the-lake-scene.

I think the Donwell Abbey of the 2009 version was right - I recall Mr. Woodhouse sitting by the summer fire in the right-looking big room.

       ...........................................................................................................

I only came on here to ask if Jack Lowden's walk will be right? In my book, Colin Firth's and Matthew McFadyan's were nice enough. (Sorry, MM, if I've mis-spelled you.)

PestoHoliday · 18/08/2025 17:38

Andrew Davies is a hack. Sexing up things that were perfect as they were. He has the nuance of a Cillit Bang advert.

Jane was wooden and plain - not at all how Jane was supposed to be. No shade to the actress who is a perfectly nice looking woman but if you're casting a great beauty you need a great beauty.

….

but couldn’t get on board with Susannah Harker as the local beauty.

I agree against our modern beauty standards Jennifer Ehle is the more beautiful, but Susannah Harker had very Grecian features which I imagine would have been the more desirable standard in Jane Austen’s time? So I think the casting is probably historically accurate?

i understood it that the casting and styling of Jane was historically accurate rather than meeting modern beauty standards

Oh interesting point about what they would have considered more beautiful. That sort of thing does make period accuracy so hard as we always bring our own of the moment baggage.

But I agree, Lizzie was prettier to me. She has a pair of exceptionally fine eyes!

KiIIingMeDeftly · 21/08/2025 08:13

It's weird to listen to interviews with Jennifer Ehle now as she sounds so American. I still think of her as Lizzie!

mondaytosunday · 21/08/2025 11:49

The 1990s one got me through some hard times. It’s my go to series. I hated the Kiera Knightly movie.
Im curious about this new one - but it has a lot to live up to.

I’ve had a glorious afternoon watching the Amanda Root/Ciaran Hinds version of Persuasion.

It is indeed perfection. Thank you to the pp who recommended it.

I watched a pair of interviews with Amanda Root and Sophie Thompson (who plays hypochondriac Mary) recently — I think when the BBC were having their Jane Austen season, and AR said one of the striking things on the shoot was that none of the actors wore make-up. Which gives it a much less glossy ‘made for a screen’ air.

Rivalled · 22/08/2025 19:31

I can’t think the new version will add anything to the bbc adaptation - but I suppose they do always get remade with celebs from a newer generation.

That’s what I loved about it. I felt like I was watching Regency England, muddy hems and all. No intrusive music, false eyelashes or whitened teeth. Wonderful.

And I’d take Wentworth over Darcy any day. Him overhearing Anne’s conversation and writing that letter makes me melt every time.

Yes, Wentworth is cool. He has a career, sees the girl he wants and proposes, and when she allows herself to be persuaded out of the engagement, he goes off to sea, gets promoted and makes a lot of prize money, comes back and falls in love with her again. And writes a brilliant letter.

Persuasion is definitely my fav of the books. I can’t find the Amanda Root version anywhere to watch.

Fabulous, that’s today’s viewing sorted. I must have missed it when I looked yesterday.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/08/2025 21:48

Glad I’ve found this thread, I’ve been off sick this week and have made my way through all the Jane Austen series on iplayer.

So far I’ve watched Pride and prejudice (film and series, unpopular opinion but I prefer the film!)
Ssnse and Sensibility, love the series and think it’s better than the Emma Thompson film.
Persuasion.
Emma the series.
I also watched Mansfield Park for the first time, not sure on that one as it felt a bit icky that Fanny ended up with the cousin, although I’m guessing not unusual in those days.

Im looking forward to the new series, love anything to do with Jane Austen, she is one of my idols. I can’t watch the old bbc series again as I find Alison Steadman so over the top as Mrs Bennet, she’s like a pantomime character. Brenda Blethyn version was much more balanced imo.

TubeScreamer · 25/08/2025 08:34

Off the back of this thread, I tried to watch persuasion on iplayer yesterday but had to give up. The sound was really muffled and uncomfortable to listen to. I genuinely thought there was something wrong with my ears. I changed to something else on iplayer and could here fine, so it wasn’t me! I was quite disappointed.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 25/08/2025 08:45

@TubeScreameri watched it fine, it is an old film now though. I noticed the film doesn’t include the scene where Anne gets mobbed by her nephews and Wentworth rescues her which is quite an important one really.

Isthisreasonable · 25/08/2025 11:02

Jack Lowden is just too much of a Simon Pegg lookalike to be Mr Darcy.
