I’m getting snacks and drinks in and watching the whole thing while pretending I’m 12 again. Can’t wait for the Quo to kick it off in half an hour! Anyone else gonna watch?

That bit is so cringe. I remember at the time even 12 year old me thought "Nice idea but you really didnt think it through".

Think he was imagining "Courtney Cox with Bruce Springsteen", didnt pull it off!

Think they planned to do Pride but had to drop it due to Bono’s walkabout.

Merrilydancing · 12/07/2025 21:04

Watching Bono at the edge of the stage reaching out to the crowd and it was nice to see that it was all fans and not the usual VIP section where everyone stands stoney faced.

Also no corporate sponsors. Nowadays they would be sponsored up to the hilt.

JaneJeffer · 12/07/2025 21:05

I thought they were great @MissAmbrosia

Evenstar · 12/07/2025 21:06

We saw Simple Minds at IOW Festival last year and weren’t particularly impressed, he kept shouting at everyone to get their hands in the air!

JaneJeffer · 12/07/2025 21:06

Sting is back

SirChenjins · 12/07/2025 21:06

There definitely fewer female acts then than there would be now - never really noticed it at the time.

JaneJeffer · 12/07/2025 21:06

Lovingmayo · 12/07/2025 21:06

He was on the original song, so seems fair.

Seeline · 12/07/2025 21:08

I think bananarama were the only females singing on Do they know it's Christmas.
I think many of the popular female artists at the time were American.

Definitely.

Money is for Nothing. It's hard to imagine the impact MTV had now when you can stream anything you want.

Jellykat · 12/07/2025 21:10

Band member in the red jacket is a tad keen Grin

Appalonia · 12/07/2025 21:10

I'm kinda confused now, who's in the UK and who's in Philadelphia!

SwedishEdith · 12/07/2025 21:11

HauntedBungalow · 12/07/2025 20:58

Is there any subject that the British can't shoehorn a discussion about WWII into?

It's just a benchmark for timelines that's all. The end of the war is quite a notable historic date.

And Jodie Whatley from Shalimar.

SirChenjins · 12/07/2025 21:12

Grandparents? Parents if you were a teen/20 something in 1985!

Definitely grandparents. I was 17 in 1985, my parents were 37-38. Admittedly they were young parents but my friends' older parents were still not old enough to have served in WWII!

Wild. I was 20. DD is 29 NOW and her grandad served in WW2. He was a little older than average, but was 18 when war broke out. Lots of my friends had parents who were old enough. You only needed to be 18 in say 1944 so born in 1926 and 59 in 1985. Surely lots of people in their late teens/20s had a parent (father anyway) who was 59?

God I had the biggest crush on Jim Kerr

Charlie Burchill for me

SpottyAardvark · 12/07/2025 21:13

Brothers in Arms had just been released in the summer of 85 and Dire Straits were becoming superstars. Tens of millions of CD sales, constant rotation on MTV and massive global stadium tours followed, then Mark Knopfler decided he was done with superstardom, broke up the band & went back to the quiet life. Sensible chap.

WillowTit · 12/07/2025 21:13
