Can anybody recommend me a series that's light and soapy but well acted?

I'm watching The White Lotus but I'm finding it quite dark and depressing. I loved Nashville and Desperate Housewives back in the day. Is there anything with a similar vibe on any of the streaming services? I don't have Apple but I have Netflix and Now.

have you watched Jane the virgin?

DeirdreDragon · 01/07/2025 21:58

Gilmore Girls! Brilliant stuff

justasking111 · 01/07/2025 22:00

I'm into Heartland at the moment.

Grace and Frankie

Sweet Magnolias on Netflix I was gutted when I finished them all

Virgini river
Cheapseprak shores
Magnolias

If Shtisel is still on Netflix, I’d recommend it. It’s a well written soap/drama about an Orthodox Jewish community; I found the cultural stuff really interesting and got involved with the characters.

The brief was well acted 😂

Thanks. I've seen Virgin River and Grace and Frankie but not Gilmore Girls. Maybe it's time to give that a go.

Shakespeare and Hathaway - superb cosy mystery series, and well worth watching. BBC.

Om83 · 01/07/2025 22:06

i’m not sure it’s well acted but is entertaining and easy… sweet magnolias, Chesapeake shores, ginny and Georgia, sirens- all Netflix. If you have sky I have recently gotten into watching ‘and just like that’ (sex and the city follow on)

A Place to Call Home
Heartland

Walkthelakes · 01/07/2025 22:09

Schitts Creek on Netflix
Bad Boys on Channel 4.
for me both of those were beautifully written, properly funny, but had deep hearts and were so moving. I absolutely loved both of them and am jealous if you are going to watch them for the first time

FloppySarnie · 01/07/2025 22:12

Oooh yes a place to call home is amazing.

5 bedrooms is good too. It’s on iplayer I think.

theresnolimits · 01/07/2025 22:14

This is Us - brilliant

CheerfulBunny · 01/07/2025 22:14

The Split is amazing if it's still on IPlayer.

Londonmummy66 · 01/07/2025 22:18

malory towers on iplayer

CatChant · 01/07/2025 22:18

Seaside Hotel on Channel 4’s streaming service is delightful.

Greetingscard · 01/07/2025 22:41

Parenthood on Netflix

BlueEyedBogWitch · 01/07/2025 22:44

I’m enjoying Stick on Apple.

Middlemarch123 · 02/07/2025 20:11

Have you seen Last Tango in Halifax on IPlayer? If not you’re in for a treat.

It’s not exactly ‘light and soapy’ as the OP asked for though, is it?!

We enjoyed 800 words, set in New Zealand, a widower and his teenage children move there from Australia. 800 words is the amount of words he has to write as a journalist .
