Can anybody recommend me a series that's light and soapy but well acted?

I'm watching The White Lotus but I'm finding it quite dark and depressing. I loved Nashville and Desperate Housewives back in the day. Is there anything with a similar vibe on any of the streaming services? I don't have Apple but I have Netflix and Now.

Ransom Canyon and Sweet Magnolias - Netflix
Etoile on Amazon Prime - it’s by the creators of the Gilmore Girls and Mrs Maisel

Five bedrooms (was on iPlayer but not anymore - think it’s on Amazon prime)
Bump (iPlayer)
a million little things (available on U which is free streaming channel)
Did you ever watch Last tango in Halifax? It’s an oldie but a good one.

Have you watched Modern Family? Short episodes, very funny. Think it's on Netflix.

Also The Middle on ITV Hub.

I also loved Sirens and Four Seasons.

Seaside Hotel on Channel 4’s streaming service is delightful.

I had to get series 9 on dvd. Series 10 is so expensive!

Superstore on Netflix.

Yellowstone. It has a bit of fist-fight type violence but no sexual violence. It’s a great family saga with lovely scenery and mesmerising cowboying. And if you like it, there are loans of spin offs to keep you going thereafter.

User5612347 · 09/07/2025 20:26

I was watching Yellowstone until Season 4 but it got insanely violent. I turned it off mid episode and never went back to it.

The Good Girl's Guide To Murer on Netflix is good (originally shown on BBC)
All Creature's Great And Small (new one)
The Durrells (originally C5)

Did you watch Friday Night Lights?

Fasterthan40 · 09/07/2025 21:25

First series of Scandal (Disney plus) is all about the politics and is fun and glam. Then they started chucking in violence in subsequent series. I really resent spoiling a fun series with pain and misery. Just leave it at the scheming and dastardly plotting.

storminabuttercup · 09/07/2025 21:36

An old one but Stella?

I love the madam blanc mysteries, really enjoyed Death Valley, also death in paradise, beyond paradise, the good ship murder, hope street, Shakespeare and Hathaway

agree with others about Colin from accounts and 5 bedrooms also upper middle bogan

You need:

Colin From Accounts

Think there may be two seasons. Can’t remember which streaming platform but it would almost be worth signing up for.

The idea of Peaky Blinders being light and soapy is - gobsmacking! 😂😂

You DO need Colin from Accounts! So good!

No Activity by the same people.

Such Brave Girls - a mum and two daughters who are struggling financially since the dad left.

All on iPlayer.
Quirky comedies, a little bit different and unexpected, definitely entertaining with great characters.

I also loved Mad Men but you've probably seen that, it's an old one.

wejammin · 09/07/2025 21:43

Mum on BBC iPlayer
Better Things (I think is on iPlayer)
Kim's convenience on Netflix

wejammin · 09/07/2025 21:43

Bump on BBC iPlayer

That's how I felt about Yellowstone. I liked the scenery and Kevin Costner being all rugged and the banter between Beth and Rip. I don't know why they had to make it so dark.
