With only five posts left on the old thread, thought I'd start this so we can link between the two.

This thread carries on from the first:

Thankyou for the new thread . Looking forward to Wednesday.

I like the brothers more and more. The scenes with the camel herders were great, I loved them joining in the song!

Londonnight · 31/05/2025 13:41

I hope the brothers win. I really like them.

FleurDeFleur · 31/05/2025 13:42

Me too. They have such a great attitude, although I do like the others as well. It's a shame that Yin and Gaz couldn't continue.

hopeishere · 31/05/2025 13:44

Place marking! The sisters thing seems a bit overblown and the younger sister suddenly being all loose and singing and stuff was odd.

LuckysDadsHat · 31/05/2025 13:45

Is there 2 legs left? I couldn't work out how many are left.

the80sweregreat · 31/05/2025 13:46

I would have preferred to see more if Gaz and Yin, but not to be. Still haven’t any desire to go to India on the back of this programme, even if people seem to love it there

FleurDeFleur · 31/05/2025 13:47

No, I really couldn't cope with the parts of India shown on here. Poor Sioned when she saw that little child begging, I'd be the same.
I thought a lot of China looked very interesting.

Yes, I think there are 2 legs left. Then possibly one of those reunion programmes.

TwentyKittens · 31/05/2025 13:57

The sisters' backstory was especially drawn out. Both of them said the bare minimum about their circumstances, so no wonder we were left with them saying the same thing over and over and over again. And in the end the "reveal" was hardly seismic.

I think they were chosen because Letitia spoke Mandarin and that was a foil for Yin not speaking it.

I was going to suggest to a friend that we apply, we've certainly had enough trauma between us to be considered. But this series has completely put me off doing that!

TheyNotLikeUs - thanks for the nudge - sorry I missed it. And thanks to TwentyKittens for the new thread. I'm catching up on the series and threads.
I don't mind the back stories - I'd not stop watching RATW - still love to see the stunning scenery and the people they meet. "Luvvly Jubbly" did make me smile.

RaraRachael · 31/05/2025 13:58

Thanks for the new thread. I never had much inclination to visit China or India. Watching this has just reinforced that.

Me too. We've learnt a lot about them, but they also seem the pair we've had most fun with in the present.

Brian is obviously well off and used to travelling well, but he's not tried to pass himself off as anything other than someone who's done well and lives a lifestyle commensurate with that.

the80sweregreat · 31/05/2025 14:05

The brothers are very honest people. I like that about them both.

FleurDeFleur · 31/05/2025 14:10

@TwentyKittens , I would agree with that. Brian and Melvyn seem to be really embracing it, and getting out of it what they can. I loved the scene on the first leg when they ended up in that awful lodging place, and were rocking with laughter about it.
The sisters seem to be talking a lot about the same thing, which puzzled me. Fin is doing well with his diabetes as well as supporting Sioned being understandably overwhelmed by India.
Oh, and thanks for the thread!

Me too , I’d like them to win ,

the80sweregreat · 31/05/2025 14:42

yes, thanks for the new thread.

It’s a fascinating show , nice to see something different that isn’t a celebrity visiting somewhere posh in nice hotels or on a cruise or another quiz show ( I know there have been a couple of celeb series of this show, but same format )

advantagelove · 31/05/2025 14:59

I suppose I like one of the brothers more than the other one but they're both OK, same with the sisters. Really wish Gaz & Yin were still in the race.

PuppyMonkey · 31/05/2025 15:04

Brian, Melvyn and the wheely suitcase all the way! Grin

Gundogday · 31/05/2025 15:07

Apart from the youngsters, every pair seems to have a well travelled member between them.

Thank you fir starting this Shiney new thread.

This might have been covered in the original thread. When Yin said she didn't speak Chinese, I assumed she must have been adopted, but I got the impression she wasn't. Do we know why she didn't learn it at home from her parents?

If I recall correctly, her parents were Chinese migrants, but they always spoke English at home.

I think a lot of first generation immigrants wanted their children to be assimilated quickly so didn't continue using their mother tongue at home. In the late 80s/early 90s I was a Nursery Teacher and there was a local child minder who privately fostered Chinese children whose parents were running restaurants and take-aways. When the children reached school age they would go back to their parents. I don't think this happens now.

Her parents only spoke English at home. Back when she was young many immigrant families believed that only speaking English was the best move for their children to integrate.

ETA a lot of children I know who are Polish go to Polish school on the weekend to learn to read and write Polish as well as learning culture and history. It’s such a shame that parents felt differently when Yin was young.

INeverSeeYou · 31/05/2025 16:02

Yes, many 1st gen immigrants encouraged their children to speak English without the discrimination their parents faced with accented English.

That's changing now it's realised that racists are going to do a racism whether you speak your mother tongue or not.

The sisters and teenagers are my current faves.
