Anyone watching?

The pub ladies were annoying, I guess maybe the unhelpful sit down telling him it wasn't fit for purpose was a planned set piece, as it was such a negative and unprofessional thing to do - by that time it was already open and running, they should have said that at the bloody start! They didn't come across well from that, whinging about things he couldn't change. And same with the 'it's not my job' electricians and then Charlie fixed it. I'm not surprised Jeremy had a heart problem after all that lot. I didn't take to the chef either but he seemed to know his shit, it must be difficult when you know Jeremy's ideas are going to make life really difficult. But somehow he always seems to pull them off.

he gets the painted line to work.....

The electrician was very clear that it ‘needed a specialist’, wasn’t he?? 🤨

Apparently the pub is doing what the farm shop did. Hordes of people, endless traffic and it’s put another pub down the road out of business. So you can see why the council had concerns. Apparently the prices are eye watering high too.

I’ve just watched the last two episodes, and seeing the vast queues of people did make my heart sink.

Which is obviously what WODC were worried about.

bluebunnyjacket · 07/06/2025 01:16

Just finished the last two episodes.

I thought the two women running the pub were just awful to be honest. Was the scene where they looked like they quit due to the premises for dramatic effect?

I preferred the other series where it focussed on farming but it was interesting to see the pub stuff. It seemed like a money pit.

the80sweregreat · 07/06/2025 05:20

I found the pub episodes fascinating. I rarely go in any pubs, but I can see now why so many are failing :(
Especially as the likes of weatherspoons is cheaper and so on and the mid range price ones probably can’t compete and the running costs are eye watering too.

Littletreefrog · 06/06/2025 22:53

Doesn't make good telly though does it.

Yes I do wonder how much is done to make good telly rather than for sensible reasons. Somehow he has to keep ramping up the drama for the cameras. That must be exhausting in itself.

digiwidgy · 07/06/2025 07:54

Really enjoyed it but for me, too much pub stuff. I like the farming. I am also one who generally didn’t like JC but love him in this. I particularly liked him bringing back the cooperative to supply the pub. He does seem to have farming interests at heart.

I agree the two pub females weren’t great. I have read this morning that reviving pubs is their business. I wonder how that’s going to go for the, now.

Harriet was fabulous. What happened to the restaurant on Diddly Squat. I can’t remember. I thought it opened and was ok.

the80sweregreat · 07/06/2025 08:39

I don’t think the restaurant at the farm is still going, but the burger bar is. It’s not been mentioned anyway.

blobby10 · 07/06/2025 08:47

I watched ep5 but was in a bad mood and for some reason the episode annoyed me even more. Agree with all of you that those two pub women were ridiculous, plus wondering why they didn't just do the soft or limited opening but then, agree it wouldn't make good TV. Felt a bit sorry for the young staff members who were subjected to the JC swearathon about what to say if anyone queries prices and suchlike -- that was unncessary. But also the prices being so high must put off a lot of "just going cos its JC" visitors so self limiting the numbers somewhat.

It’s not cheap but it’s not a pile it high and sell it cheap type of place and British ingredients will be more expensive - the Cornish pepper was ten times the price of imported pepper.

That said the carvery people tucked in didn’t they 😮. Those plates were stacked high.

stickybear · 08/06/2025 11:20

Just finished the series last night and agree with others that I'd have preferred a bit less pub and a bit more farm, e.g. it would've been interesting to hear from some of the other farmers in the cooperative about how the bad weather had impacted on them. I still enjoyed it though and am sad that it's over! It's such a great cast of really capable, likeable people. I love Charlie and Alan the builder.

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2025 11:27

The two lady managers are getting a pasting on X, but I do feel a lot was staged and some criticism is just people who don’t like women in charge of things, but that’s only my opinion! Maybe protect managers always get the flak.
It was JC who messed up the bank holiday dates and that one week extra may have made a difference too. He was disorganized there , but no, it’s the women who are in the wrong !

derxa · 08/06/2025 11:28

Did anyone spot Rachel Reeves at the end?

Icebreakhell · 08/06/2025 11:29

I didn’t get why he wanted that enormous pub. It was like a theme park- hideous experience to visit. At the end when the farm crew were sat around a pub table chatting my thoughts were that this was the type of pub he really wanted. Somewhere anonymous, to hang out with friends and local farmers. He literally built the opposite.

Those 2 women were a joke. Unprofessional, profligate with his money, vile chancers. Anyone with pub experience and knowing what a draw it would be would have a trial opening, or at least taken bookings only. Letting people completely loose on that carvery was also avoidable. I can never tell though how many of the calamities are a set up for entertainment.

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2025 11:37

If it I had been two men project managers , they would have got some slack though!
The chef only brought up about extra supplies at the last moment too, but nobody had a go at him, although maybe he thought that JC had a plan there !
It was chaos and messing up the calendar didn’t help

I think he did want a pub like the one he visited at the end but unfortunately he can never have that and include it in his show. A lot of famous people own pubs but because they don't have such a hugely popular show they don't get overrun.

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2025 13:19

I suppose the hype will die down eventually and the prices are high end , so might turn people off eating there eventually.
Most of the other pubs they looked at were also huge. I suppose he could have tried for a smaller one, but like the shop , it was always going to be popular , so this was a comprise?
The food looks delicious. I hope it’s a success mostly because of the other farmers and employing local staff is always good too, so good for the locals. Even if the council isn’t always convinced because of other problems around such a venue.

whiterabbity · 08/06/2025 14:51

Yes @derxa, I said to my DH and we had to rewind so he could spot it- why was it half a second??

Loved the series but thought that he was being too optimistic re opening date. The two women really annoyed me, they found it hilarious that it was costing him so much money and were playing interior design with his funds. Also didn’t understand why they didn’t do a booking system or soft launch, look what happened when he opened his shop!

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2025 14:52

Surprised that they would let Rachel Reeves in the pub. I didn’t notice her there.

They didn't. Her photo popped up for a second when Jeremy said things couldn't be worse next year.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 08/06/2025 15:05

It was like subliminal messaging. It flashed up on the screen for a fraction of a second.

pyzaz · 08/06/2025 15:24

I thought the episode (7th?) where he so wanted to just do the harvest but was caught up with opening the pub was so well done. I thought JC did really well to show how stressed he was, and how the stress affected him - arguing with Caleb over nothing, not finding things funny any more, when he normally would. Like a little insight into the psychology of stress, how it comes about and how it can affect people.

It's implied that he regrets opening the pub at harvest time, but then I suspect opening the pub too early was all calculated to make good, dramatic telly (and it worked).

And I agree with other PPs, that the 2 women seemed like scammers from the start - don't know why he employed them in the first place, but I suppose finding the right people can often be difficult.

the80sweregreat · 08/06/2025 15:27

Oh yes! Sorry , I did notice that.
I thought the poster meant she was actually in the pub .. I did find it strange! Lol
( she is probably on the barred list )

It’s sad if another pub has gone out of business although I’m surprised, as for every person who wants to visit the Farmer’s Dog, an equal number would prefer somewhere quieter and and less busy. I checked his prices on their website and they were pretty average for the area. I know the pub they met up in a few of the episodes, it’s just outside of Chipping Norton, I’ve eaten there and their prices are pretty similar to JC’s place. It’s a fairly expensive area, Daylesford Organic is just down the road, and that place really is pricey! (Although beautifully done).
