How can he be so funny yet be so incompetent?

Anyone watching?

OP posts:

He has mellowed out a bit , I think doing some farming has grounded him really. Made him realize it’s not all about him maybe !

There was a vaguely profound bit where he ruminates on the cycle of feeding waste from brewing to cows that then fertilise the fields the barley is grown ...

Cocolapew · 04/06/2025 14:43

I love JC I still watch the Top Gear specials for a laugh.
I loved the tractor taking off across the field and Lisa is a gem.
I just can't get my head around how he can feed so many people in his pub in a day 😄. Farms must have a bigger turnaround of livestock for meat than I thought.

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2025 14:54

He said once that one pig can feed a 1000 people or something? I remember it was a lot of people !

It was one cow.

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2025 14:55

Oh a cow ! Sorry

"thinks about the size of a Pig , that would feed 1000 meals"
Has nightmares 🤯

Young Farmers! Best days of our lives. The range of activities is amazing. Speech making, stock judging, talent competitions as well as dances and the usual getting pissed. It is brilliant for giving people confidence. I notice that a lot of the girls look like Harriet. Longish blonde hair eyelashes posh leather boots and shorts if the Royal Highland Show is anything to go by

The YFs do the gate and so on at one of the ag shows we sometimes go to, and the women scrub up incredibly well. They manage to walk about on tussocky grass in smart shoes, looking as if they're about to go to a wedding.

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2025 16:43

Sorry , I could have sworn JC mentioned pigs ! ( maybe he did!) of course it’s cows 🙄

He has pigs as well, but that was a conversation with his butcher, who listed all the different cuts and how many servings he would get off each from one of his cows.

Somewhere in Series 2, just after he got the cattle and was preparing to refurb the lambing shed into the restaurant.

I loathe his local planning authority, they really do have it in for him. I know he sails close to the wind with planning stuff, but all farmers do, AND farmers do have certain permitted development rights on their land, and making farm tracks is part of normal farming.
(But not turning a new lambing shed into a restaurant, sadly)

Charlie has seen it all, and he's continually "surprised" that applications keep getting rejected.

chattyness · 04/06/2025 19:15

I am loving this show so much, I didn't expect to as I've never been a JC fan, I didn't dislike him, I just didn't watch anything he was on for more than a minute before switching off as not my type of shows. Anyway I totally love him in this & Lisa, Kaleb & Charlie too ,also really liked Harriet she is brilliant isn't she.

The blooming councils down there need a big shake up, such petty jealousy and mean spirited a**holes nearly all of them.

chlodk · 04/06/2025 19:38

I’ve just started watching and it feels more staged than the last seasons (the painted line maker invention was obvs never going to work, the trough alone would only hold one lines worth) Still watching and enjoying it but not as impressed as previously.

SerendipityJane · 04/06/2025 20:50

I loathe his local planning authority, they really do have it in for him.

To be fair, they did allow the picnic area to go.

Charlie: "Yes, we called them and they said there was no need for them to see you, they'd just approve it." 😀

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 04/06/2025 23:05

The Council simply dislike him, as an individual, which is the height of unprofessionalism.
They see him as lowering the tone of the place, if he attracts customers to the area. He wants bums on seats, for crying out loud.

Those people could be (whispers) working class!

But, they seem to be a law unto themselves, so, there’s no one to keep them in check.

It was a notorious Dogging area, though!

It was a notorious Dogging area, though!

With the usual caveat about not knowing the full story, edited for TV in place, whilst that's true, it's doesn't explain why the previous owner seemed unable to get them to relax it ?

It's hard not to believe the fear of publicity rather swayed them.

AliasGraced · 06/06/2025 07:46

Apparently the pub is doing what the farm shop did. Hordes of people, endless traffic and it’s put another pub down the road out of business. So you can see why the council had concerns. Apparently the prices are eye watering high too.

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2025 13:00

25 k loss for the durum wheat :(
Its soul destroying isn’t it.

To be fair to the planners though, it does matter that it’s JC who’s making the application, as it’s a totally different consideration than if you or I were making it. I live in the area and the hordes of people his shop/pub have bought to the area are immense, day in day out, and the roads just aren’t built for it. Yes, the pub is just off a main road but the people who travel to see the pub also want to see the farm too, and the popularity of the show has brought massive crowds. And as a previous poster has already mentioned, the other pubs in the immediate vicinity of his are now all losing a lot of their business. So the planners needed to consider this.

I enjoy watching the show, and think he’s done so much to support British farming, but it is a bit like someone’s opened Alton Towers in our village!

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2025 20:55

Wow, how hard is it to be a farmer or a pub owner !
This show had educated me in the art of business and how hard it is and he has money to throw at it. How anyone normal manages is beyond me ..
Such a brilliant show

Littletreefrog · 06/06/2025 22:09

I loved Charlie trying to fix the gas/fan issue. Everyone else was freaking out and he was just trying to fix it even though I'm pretty sure it wasn't really his job to do that.

I thought the two women running the pub were just expecting to be able to spend his money willy nilly. They knew well before the pub opened the limitations of the building but waited until everything was going to hell in a hand basket to say the building wasn't fit for purpose. Plus I have never worked in a pub (and I've worked in a few) that had a staff room.

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2025 22:21

Most places have a staff loo / locker rooms, but not sure about pubs? Must be somewhere for staff to get away from the customers?
I agree that the two ladies probably thought it might be easier to do than it was! They should have done a dummy run or ‘
soft opening ‘ first.

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2025 22:22

Charlie is pretty cool under pressure isn’t he? I do like him , he is someone you would want on your side in a crisis.

I couldn’t understand why JC was so fixated on opening for the August bank holiday. It would have made so much more sense to have had a soft opening with more limited numbers so they could fix issues and ease the staff in. Instead it was an absolute shit show.

Doesn't make good telly though does it.

I love it and he is far from incompetent. `He has had an excellent career, a great promoter of himself and has turned his had to farming in his 60s. its a great series. I have rationed myself to one episode a day and tomorrow is the last one I am already feeling sad
