How can he be so funny yet be so incompetent?

Anyone watching?

OP posts:

Love him or not, but Jeremey Clarkson has helped to make some cracking shows over the years and Dh and I still watch old ‘top gear’ ones in Africa and India etc.
He seems to know how to make them entertaining , but I appreciate he has a good team around him too.

hby9628 · 30/05/2025 15:57

I’ve only watched 2 episodes. Agree about Kalebs roadshow. So embarrassed for him! Harriet is mega what an inspiration she is. Brilliant. Can’t wait to watch the rest

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 16:02

Two more were put up today , so had a nice morning catching up with the pub buying antics and costs !
Considering it is a business wrought with problems and setbacks , I am surprised he wants one tbh.
Mind you , the farm was a mystery to JC at first and he has managed that ( with his trusty band of people behind him )

Soubriquet · 30/05/2025 16:02

I’m rewatching from series 1 and I love Harriet! She’s fantastic

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 16:03

At first , I thought that Kaleb was doing panto ! It’s an actual road show by the looks of it.

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 16:06

I have re watched episode one and I do believe that he really had no idea about what equipment to buy and the actual logistics of it all. I don’t think that was scripted at all ( even if some of it is )
I know I wouldn’t have a Scooby either , it’s really been fun being educated about farming. )

I think that in a previous season ( can’t remember which one ) Jeremy Clarkson set up a ‘ pop up ‘ restaurant type thing as I recall the camera men and women and production people sitting outside and they couldn’t get their cars outside this place so had to walk to it. Not sure why it had to close down , but it hasn’t been mentioned since?
I love how they just casually mention a million here or 400,00 there , it’s another world and Lisa seems to be on board with all of it too. It must be lovely to be that wealthy. The pub he had bought is nice, apparently, but such hard work even if he manages to hive off a lot of it to other people.
looking forwards to the last episode on Saturday and I did like Hariott a lot. Such a hard worker and very pleasant. I know a lot of it is scripted, but it’s my favorite series ever and I know diddley squat about farming ( but I feel I know a lot more now. )

They were trying to circumvent the planning department, if it was an existing building they could open the restaurant so they went all guns blazing, it up to code and open in 2 days and 2 days later got a cease and desist letter from the council.

I love this show - have some relations who are farmers and they say JC has done more for the farming industry with Clarksons Farm than Countryfile has done in over 20 years. Its not just the moments where you think "WTF is he doing? Surely no one is that stupid" but he doesn't shy away from stating the cold hard facts and difficult decisions that farmers face everyday - will Richard Hammond survive? What about Harvey Swinestein the bully pig - will he survive to mate again?
Add into that the falling number of abbatoirs, the decline in the number of village pubs, village shops etc etc and he seems to encompass the whole industry, not just the agricultural side, as well as the Govt red tape

SerendipityJane · 30/05/2025 18:24

Who knew ploughing was environmentally costly ? Until last week one fact I thought I could take to the bank was that fields were ploughed before sown.

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 18:33

I guess that rural pubs suffer more because people can’t get to them and home again that easily ( unless you have a designated driver or a cab booked )
Where I live , people tend to walk up into town and home again or it’s cheap for a taxi if you can’t get the bus. Pubs haven’t really suffered that much where I am and always look full , have bands on etc.
JC is taking a risk becoming a publican and it’s not easy getting an alcohol licence , ( so I’m told ) he’ll need a decent manager and chef and so on.
I admire his risk taking when most 60 plus people are looking to retire or slow down a bit. Plus with the shop and the farm it’s all full on. Makes me feel lazy ( but then I haven’t any money to invest in such things !)

Tooty78 · 30/05/2025 18:45

Clarksons Farm is brilliant! We rewatched the previous 3 series last week prior to watching series 4. Isn't the English countryside glorious? (apart from that horrendous rain in one of last weeks episode) Farmers are so at the mercy of the weather gods.
When I mention this programme people will say 'can't stand Clarkson', but as other posters have said this version of JC is different. The sorrow he showed when he loses lambs or piglets is so touching, and I am still laughing over the series 3 episode, when he was using the mustard seed cracker, and hadn't taken the lid off and poured the seeds all over the floor! His face was a picture😆

My PILs had a small holding when their kids were younger, and my DH always said
"There is nothing cuter than newborn piglets" so he is really loving this programme.🐷

I know several farmers and they all agree that Clarkson has done a massive amount to alert people to the realties of farming.

One of my very few claims to fame is that I know someone who knows Cheerful Charlie.

I love Charlie!! 🤣🤣his expressions when JC announces his latest madcap plan or turns up with another monster tractor 🤣🤣

showyourquality · 30/05/2025 19:06

Really enjoying this series, as usual. Harriet is great.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 30/05/2025 19:09

I love Charlie too!!

I am Charlie where I work, having to rein in the boss and his madcap ideas with boring old numbers and compliance and whatnot 🤣

Tooty78 · 30/05/2025 20:30

The Oliver Reed comment cracked me up😆

derxa · 30/05/2025 20:38

I’ve been at more livestock auctions than you can stick at. Why the hell did Jeremy not just stick to the lots he had marked on the catalogue. That was a bit irritating. I’m enjoying the series hugely though.

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 21:35

The Scottish farmer did look like Oliver Reed ! ( unless that was his actual name ! 😂)
I love how Charlie was busy praising Harriet’s bought cows , but JC’s ones need to eat more.
The ‘ jumerellas ‘ are a fortune arn’t they ? 40 k for four , it really is another world

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 21:37

Charlie is my favorite too. The way he’ll just say ‘ no ‘ or yes ‘cracks me up. Or the ‘ I told you so’ face when it goes wrong . 😑
He is brilliant

Littletreefrog · 30/05/2025 21:39

So how does Charlie make money? Does he have a set fee or does he get a percentage of whatever the farm he is advising make?

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 21:42

Charlie works for many other farms as a kind of mobile business manager I think. He manages the farm that is ‘ next door to J C’s one as it was mentioned in series one. I bet he earns a lot of money , but that’s just a guess ( based on nothing ! )
He knows his stuff

Skandar · 30/05/2025 21:50

I watched the Kaleb roadshow thing the other day and was pleasantly surprised. It is a bit cringe in places, but he mostly talks about how he got in to farming, when he doesn't come from a farming family. He's so young and has done incredibly well for himself!
(He also covers where milk comes from, his love of tractors and why he hates sheep)

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 21:57

Kaleb , I imagined he would come from a farming family ! Shows what I know ( which is nothing )
He is so knowledgeable isn’t he.

MissyGirlie · 30/05/2025 22:01

Littletreefrog · 30/05/2025 21:39

He works for an agricultural advice company which iirc he founded or co-founded. It employs a fair few people across the country. I suspect they will be paid by the hour for advice.
