@C8H10N4O2 I'm sort of almost not because I've been looking at his work more and am thinking of getting a couple of prints. So, thanks for doing good whilst being a twat, Craig!

I’m torn on prints. Can they really recreate the textures of the paint?

That said, Tate prints tend to be good and I have the perfect places for at least two of these (not wild about their framing options though).

I’m in the minority here I think but I thought John’s main bar was bloody awful and his amazing bar in no way made up for it. His place looked so much better before the makeover. Grin

Didn’t much like Craig’s either but at least he’s been good throughout the series. John should’ve gone in about week 2 or 3.

Rita FTW then.

Bruisername · 22/05/2025 21:18

I found that quite boring

johns performance space was rubbish but the bar was really nice

Craig’s was ok but definitely his worst

ritas was a bit meh tbh. But based on previous performance she deserves the win

I feel like the final would have been better with Craig. It’s not the first time a weak person has reached the final though and then won it I just can’t remember which series I’m thinking of

PuppyMonkey · 22/05/2025 21:22

@Bruisername yes it was the series with a really awful woman who made some horrible curtain thing for a hotel that would hand been a nightmare to clean. She was really rubbish but she ended up winning if I recall correctly.

‘Intentional clutter’ could be peak twatdom.

Is that another word for hoarding?

I love a good print, but nope, they can never recreate what's so special. We're so lucky that Rothko himself gave the Tate some of the Seagrams murals. You've never seen a painting until you get to stand in front of it and see everything about it. You can think something is pretty wonderful and then you see it and you're totally blown away.

But, I agree that the Tate do a good print which I where I've been looking. And their framing leaves a lot to be desired!

Oh and I've enjoyed meeting a fellow fan! Rothko isn't an easy man to find fans of so it's always great when you do and then you try to not go too over the top about it but Craig forces you to do that because he's a dreadful man! 😆

I remember that one. She had dark hair and was very sort of dark Victorian gothic who won despite being incredibly weak at times. I think she had some decent weeks - could be misremembering - but was a very, very weak winner of the series.

I remember her too. When I saw the bar (in a hotel?) which she designed as the prize for winning, it was really good. And she was good in the final but pretty crap for the rest of it.

Soukmyfalafel · 22/05/2025 22:47

A lot of people said that about Monica a few series back, but she actually did a great job in the final.

Was it Cassie from series one? I can't recall all of the winners now, but I remember her because it was baffling her winning, but she actually did well with the contract she got as a prize.

Bruisername · 22/05/2025 22:50

I’ve never seen what the finalist does with their prize. I’ve always thought they must get quite a big hand hold so it won’t be a disaster. The real prize is the publicity and contacts

FiveBarGate · 22/05/2025 23:03

Rita will surely suit the prize more so than John (although I could see him on a DIY show).

None of them are Banjo! He's great on Scotland's Home of the Year - much nicer than the stuffy original panel. Good for a watch on iPlayer if you are not in Scotland.

FagsMagsandBags · 22/05/2025 23:18

I keep meaning to watch that @FiveBarGate . I didn't know that Banjo was a judge on it now. They have some great houses up in Scotland. Solid and inviting.

Soukmyfalafel · 23/05/2025 07:04

Does anyone else think that 2k was a really shit amount of budget for the task? They were pretty big rooms. I get they moaned at John because of the furniture being left, but his rooms were massive. Maybe Craig went for the charity shop vibe because it is actually cheaper than going a bit more fancy.

Ellmau · 23/05/2025 08:01

I think they had 3K. And IRL it would cost more because it doesn't include the labour costs.

Bruisername · 23/05/2025 08:18

Rita was lucky that she had some decent furniture

RancidRuby · 23/05/2025 08:40

I think the right person went home. I quite liked the upstairs bar of Craig's makeover but the downstairs space was a disaster. I do think John had a slight advantage by getting a space that had good bones, it was a gorgeous building and had all those literal bones and the glass fronted cupboards to utilise, I also liked the existing furniture as it already worked in the space. I think he (and Rita to a lesser extent) had quite a lot to work with in the first place, Craig definitely drew the short straw in terms of venue.

Bruisername · 23/05/2025 08:47

I thought John put too many tables in the performing space. Agree that he had a better room to start with

i I thought Rita had the easiest space because it was one space

but I guess that’s just the luck of the draw

imfae · 23/05/2025 19:22

@MarySueSaidBoothat’s interesting you find the show stressful . I remember chatting to someone in a shop on holiday once and she was an interior designer and hated the show .
I love it . Loved Michelle’s blue outfit . I have to confess contrary to others here , Craig has been my favourite throughout with Rita second . She did so deserve to get standout space this week. Agree with other John’s bar area was brillant and Craig’s design wasn’t great .
I love also the further you go into the competition that you get to see more of the designers own homes / their spouses / partners / family .
just based on the designs on the night , Craig deserved to go but again he has performed better throughout than John .
Also love Scotland’s home of the year . Banjo was my favourite throughout the whole series he was in . His programme again on iPlayer of Designing the Hebrides is also good . Never entirely convinced that he completes to the original time frame, as he always goes off piste and changes things .
It would be great if Banjo could come back as a guest judge on IDM . Can’t think of any other contestants from previous years .They should do a catch up programme similar to location , location , location when they go back and see what the finalists / contestants are now doing .
Agree the woman with the brown hair from a previous year , who won wasn’t great . I just remember she had used lots of lace and it just looked really unhygienic / a dust trap in hotels / shared spaces .
Looking forward to the final . Will try and watch it live . Can’t usually chat on this thread live, as watch with my daughter and have to keep pausing as she asks lots of questions and I then miss bits .

BippidyBoppety · 23/05/2025 22:44

In the chats with friends and family last night Craig was featured in his Hastings Beach hut chatting with Maria McErlane, Graham Norton's big buddy.

Craig's upstairs bar had a tiled top coffee table, G Plan ... I have the smaller one of these (9 tiles) in my garage under a load of junk https://huntvintage.co/furniture/tables/coffee-table/coffee-table-g-plan-ceramic-tile-top-70s-mid-century?srsltid=AfmBOor79ZrVaX_8kOBSu38yBTMp3plRbxMXgiEtqp2RHKa1vo9TvTQO
wonder what that's worth!

Agree with the love for Banjo .. he was a judge on a TV show Best Scottish Christmas House which was madly entertaining viewing. 2024 is available on BBC Scotland still (Scotland's Home of the Year).

FagsMagsandBags · 26/05/2025 22:25

As guessed by many of us, Byrony will be coming back to help Rita. Saw it in the iWeekend TV guide.

MrsK · 27/05/2025 14:48

@BippidyBoppety , I’ve also seen her at the dinner parties Nigella does at the end of the episode

LillianGish · 28/05/2025 08:44

Very late to the party so apologies if this has already been discussed, but I was astonished that Craig went out as I felt like they were teeing him up as a winner from the start. When you know the prize is to design a range of accessories I always think they are looking for slightly different qualities than when the prize is to design a bar (or interior space). I did think the best designs won, but I was somehow expecting them to put Craig through anyway. I absolutely love the show (and Banjo's Designing the Hebrides for that matter) - Love Alan Carr and love seeing all the designs for good and bad. I think Rita will win.

Davros · 28/05/2025 09:44

I hated John’s graffiti and that pale yellow/beige colour but his bar was good. Agreed on the chandelier being too high. I cannot understand how he has got to the final but Craig did not do well last night. There’s a bar in West Hampstead called Bobby Fitzpatrick that has that style that Craig was going for (photo attached). It’s been there ages. I am also a Rothko fan and went to the big exhibition at the Tate Modern a few years ago, there’s definitely nothing better than seeing the real thing, I think particularly with Rothko as they can look simple

Lost my post whilst checking something . Working different days this week and got exited thinking it was Thursday and final day …
Hoping that Rita wins . Love looking to see what everyone is wearing. Will Michelle wear her gorgeous sparkling jumpsuit ? Can’t find anything about the guest judge . Wondering if it might be Abigail Aherne ?

I always thought they were pretend friends as they seem really awkward. 😊
