Anyone watched the first episode?

Sorry to ask a daft question but in episode 2 what triggered the dead infected coming out of the ground and going on the rampage?

Was it something to do with what they found in the pipes and when it started smouldering from the sparkler?

Yes, the supposedly dead roots in the pipe were activated by the sparkler and sent a 'message' to the infected nearby.

Annoyed with myself. Watching episode 2 and I couldnt figure out who Abby was and I thought I had forgotten some plot point from season 1 so I googled “ who is after Joel in season 2” and first hit was about Joels death so I spoiled it for myself.

Find it hard to believe a serious organisation like the Fireflies or whatever they were called now would have groups heading off dedicated to personal vendettas though. They just left when Joel was dead. Also such a good look out why did Jackson Hole not have people posted there?

It was a shocker for sure but poorly executed I think.

Abby said in episode 2 that there were no fireflies left.

gamerchick · 27/04/2025 19:32

Yeah cordyceps got inside the town in the pipes and were activated.

From what I could make out in the game is the the remaining fireflies disbanded, after Joel’s attack at the hospital. so Abby and her friends went elsewhere and then returned 5 years later for revenge basically. I can’t say too much without giving anything away but when we kicked off in season 1 the fireflies were basically on thier last legs, was getting smaller year by year. Tommy, was part of the fireflies years before.

Arraminta · 28/04/2025 09:40

Yes, I think after Joel's attack the Fireflies were virtually non existent, so Abby and her crew travelled to Chicago to join the militia there.

spoiler for 2, 2 but I assume everyone is watching at tv pace ….

I only recently watched series 1 and enjoyed it . I loved the time that they devoted to the character development and it was also gripping . Have now also watched the first two episodes of 2 .
I was totally shocked by Joel’s death as didn’t know anything about it in the game . I suppose I missed all the hype and chat when the series first came out , although I knew a lot of people were watching and found it good .

I had to rewind it a couple of times to see that he had actually been killed - but there was definitely no going back from that !

The obvious comparison is obviously the Walking Dead which was based on a comic , but didn’t always follow the same story arcs .
I think that a lot of films / series etc are based on books and don’t always follow the book slavishly so assumed this would be the case here perhaps . I know they are also criticised for this and perhaps you just can’t please everyone .

I read an interview with the producer / show runner ( hate that term.. ) who basically said everyone who had played the game , knew that this death was coming and he didn’t want to torture them for too long waiting .

Has anyone played the game and is it closely following the narrative there ? Is that not annoying for those who know exactly what is going to happen ?

I have checked and Joel does feature in a few more episodes , I assume as flashbacks . I think for me the main strength of the series was the strong bond between the two main characters . So not sure I will enjoy the series as much .

It is, with some physical changes in casting, but story wise it’s primarily following the main narrative with some additional action scenes. I don’t find it annoying as I love the story so much!

Nah, they've changed a bit and added a bit but the story arc is bang on. I can't wait me. There are bits of the game that I'm dying to know if it's going in. A certain 'boss' is one. Not a spoiler but the gamers should know what I mean.

I just urge people to stick with it. It's an amazing pattern of events that storyline is.

labradorservant · 29/04/2025 14:47

Ep 3 question! Why does Ellie put coffee beans on his grave? Have we forgotten a reference? Also gamers please explain how a game has a story arc? Surely that depends on what you do with your character in the game. Please note that the only games I’ve really played are Tetris and supermario on the fave boy in the 90s!

gamerchick · 29/04/2025 14:59

In the first season where Joel and Ellie had a conversation about the coffee Joel was brewing when they woke up one morning. He loved the stuff, she didn't get why. Was just a bit of a tribute.

In the game we had Joel mooning over a long broken coffee machine in a hotel.

Loved the third episode. New groups introduced So next week should be good

In these kinds of games, you don’t choose to play a certain character and you don’t kind of go off and follow your own storyline. It’s a linear story arc and your choices don’t affect the game play in any way apart from in fight scenes where obviously that’s on you to get through.

There are loads of games in the world where you get to choose your own consequence with different storylines etc like Until Dawn etc but even the ‘open world’ games have a set story line and narrative for the main portion and then you go off exploring and doing side quests. The Last of Us is different in terms of storyline to say Skyrim which has lots of side quests and other things going on but is similar to say Horizon where there’s one storyline to follow and you play as the characters IN the story.

gamerchick · 29/04/2025 19:17

Oooo OT for a minute. Until dawn has a film now and it's just out, it looks excellent. That game was intense.

I wonder who TLOU will focus on next week. We've been introduced to the new factions now.

labradorservant · 29/04/2025 19:59

Thank you for clarifying. Maybe if my son doesn’t take his gaming PC to uni I might give the game a go.

Lovewine1975 · 30/04/2025 10:13

Can we talk about this weeks episode, had a question😀

Go for it

Lovewine1975 · 30/04/2025 12:05

Who where the group of people that were killed inc the bald guy and the little girl, wondered if I had missed something!

gamerchick · 30/04/2025 12:20

You haven't missed anything, we've just been introduced to the 2 new groups to progress the story.

They're called seraphites,

Lovewine1975 · 30/04/2025 15:09

@gamerchick Oh that will be interesting, finding out more about them

Squidgemoon · 02/05/2025 16:43

Slow to catch up on this week’s episode, but I’ve now seen it! I actually thought this was a really good episode, after the high stakes drama of episode 2. As a massive Pedro Pascal fan, I’m looking forward to seeing him again in flashbacks but enjoyed this episode more than I was expecting to, given he isn’t in it!

I really liked all the Jackson parts, Ellie going to Joel’s house after she got out of the hospital was sad 😞 Dina is great with her superior planning skills and I liked Seth’s redemption too.

Not yet very invested in the new groups, but I’m sure that will come.

imfae · 04/05/2025 12:01

@gamerchick& @saltandvinegarchipsticks , thanks for answering my question about the story line and the link with the game .
I think I will continue watching and give it some time to settle back after Joel .

I think I am a loyal person and this transfers to my watching habits as well . This is even when they have definitely, “jumped the shark “ . I think as a loyal fan of a show , I owe it to the writers not to give up and I hope that it was maybe just a blip and they will get back on track . I am getting better , although was probably one of the few who stuck with The Walking Dead until the last movie / special .

But we are only in season 2 here and the writing does seem to be very good.

CosmicCuppa · 05/05/2025 13:35

The actress who plays Dina really steals every scene she’s in, doesn’t she? I like the fact that she’s going with Ellie now. In the game she stays behind for the next bit due to the pregnancy and nausea. I love more Isabella Merced screen time.

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2025 13:42

I did wonder when Dina was throwing up after seeing the dead scar people if she could be pregnant, especially when she said that she had never done that before.

gamerchick · 05/05/2025 14:03

Man they've really got Issac nailed haven't they? Gave me goosebumps.

gamerchick · 05/05/2025 14:30

And that subway bit was just as anxiety inducing as the game 😅theyve done an excellent job. Can't wait for the next one.

CosmicCuppa · 05/05/2025 20:44

Isaac is perfect. Jeffrey Wright voiced the character in the games too so I think he’s doing a perfect job translating it to screen so far.
