I'm sure someone posted earlier, and I don't think it's a spoiler but will ask to be deleted if so, that he had no hearing issues and was surprised post filming to find he was subtitled as no one had had an issue at the time.

Yes I think they all said they had no issue with understanding him. That’s why I wondered if it might be a regional dialect that they understood (even if it appears as mumbling.) Like I would understand a geordie accent yet an Aussie may struggle..

It's not his accent, it's his lack of enunciation. Easier face to face because of body language, much harder to understand through a 2D tv

Yes, I think he said he sounded normal for his home town. It maybe that it's ok in person but the mics don't really work with it? I can imagine it's odd to find yourself subtitled post event when no one said anything at the time!
