New series starting next week - really looking forward to it. The teams are travelling in Asia, but I can't find information about the couples yet. Wednesday nights sorted!

My DD spent 4 months in Nepal with VSO. She lived in village with a family. She said they had so little, but shared everything. The whole village greeted her and the parties, especially weddings, went on all day and all night. Everyone was invited. The squat toilets were disgusting, but you soon got used to them... just wear flip-flops! There was one communal shower area for the whole village. Two meals were eaten each day- both were dhal and rice.

DD told me about clambering over landslides in order to avoid a 1 hour detour to get to a clinic. She said the whole mountainside could have slipped at any time. The journey to the village by road was terrifying just like you see in RATW, but it was truly the best 4 months. Living a simple, but happy life in such a close and supportive community was wonderful experience.

Wow that is a really interesting read

What's VSO?

Voluntary service overseas.

I apologise if this has been covered earlier in the thread but I’ve just caught up with the show and not read all posts.
Is anyone else struggling with the older sister Elizabeth? She seems very cold to me and superior and this episode she seemed to really revel in her younger sister’s discomfort in a cruel way.
Like the more anxious Letitia was the more she was acting like she was having the best time ever in an unnatural way and a bit like a bully.
I find them very uncomfortable to watch.

RaraRachael · 18/05/2025 23:03

I totally agree @Victoriawould24 that's exactly my impression of them too. I just can't warm to them or particularly care at all. Maybe it's editing to make it look this way, I don't know.

murasaki · 18/05/2025 23:26

I like Elizabeth and think Letitia would be very wearing. She was fine where she had the language advantage, and as soon as she lost that, she folded. She didn't seem like the person who said they loved travelling at the start. The dad's issues are not Elizabeth's fault.

NewAgeNewMe · 18/05/2025 23:46

I suspect so much of what we see and gather is down to editing. They are filmed all the time and then it’s put together at the end into a few hours of tv. We see what the producers want us to see as to the narrative they want to portray.

The brothers aren't my favourites but at least we don't get hours of navel gazing moaning from them. Once again, this episode was more back story than actual adventure and travel. It feels like at least 15 minutes was devoted to the subject of Tom's right hand.

We were also quite mystified that there was a shovel available for cleaning up the pig poo, but not for the buffalo poo. Did they actually think that made for good telly, forcing the poor man to pick it up with his hands? Do they think we're stupid?

I hope the sisters have their big bust up and reconciliation scene soon (very reminiscent of the Mum and daughter last year) so that we can all move on!

Maybe they only have one spade and could risk cross contamination of parasites and disease between the animals if the spade was shared. The buffalo are grass eaters so not las bad as picking up after meat eaters.

I'm surprised how little money is being talked about this series. In previous series budget has seemed a constant issue, whereas this one it's barely mentioned apart from talking about doing homestays to save money. It's not clear how much they earn from any jobs etc. I was surprised finn and sioned have been staying in hotels all this time rather than hostels/ sleeper transport etc.

I wonder if it will become more pressing as they go on (but they're seemingly doing quite well with budgets given they have approx half left, and India will be relatively cheaper than China).

I do wonder at the editing, given how many hours of film they must have. Interesting what they decide to leave in. We've not heard any mention of Finns diabetes since the start, but that must be a fairly major issue for him to manage. Also wondering as pp have said about illness in India. I'd be surprised if any pair want affected at all!

luluzu · 19/05/2025 14:30

I wonder how Gaz and Yin’s relationship will change when he watches back the footage of her crying about her ex partner and calling him her person. I was really shocked that she moved back in with Gaz after her ex passed and can’t see that he’s moved on at all really. Or that he can move on if still living with her. It must be weird for their daughter as well - divorced parents who still live together and do everything together but her mum is grieving another man!

I like the brothers and hope they win. Their humour and ability to just get on with it, despite not being in their comfort zone is a relief with all the others struggling with any change.

I did feel for Sioned being overwhelmed as I grew up in India for 21 years and outside of my city in the south west found most of the North chaotic and unpleasant. After 17 years in the UK though I struggle a few days when back as I need time to re-acclimatise. However, I do wish she’d be more stoic instead of always saying she’s homesick. Fin doesn’t seem to have much personality (unlike Owen and Alfie last season of a similar age) but I do think he’s more sensible in not wanting to rush marriage and possibly recognises that they’re not as compatible as Sioned thinks.

I was surprised by how different Letitia is someplace she hasn’t been before. I don’t think it’s the language as they’re getting by with English in Nepal and India. She seemed so confident initially and has become a shadow of herself! She still seems resentful of Elizabeth leaving which is unfair as her sister can’t be her keeper.

The drip feed on Tom was immense! And I feel
more empathy for him and his mum where previously I just thought he was being a bit useless. They both seem the most comfortable/least fazed in Nepal and India so I did wonder if they’ve been before.

claudiaswinklemen · 19/05/2025 16:09

I'm sure I read somewhere that Yaz has since moved out from Gaz's feeling more confident and adventurous about the future.

Istgisforreal · 19/05/2025 18:50

I spent months travelling in India, it's bloody exhausting and overwhelming. I possibly cried now and then, if you haven't been there you just can't understand how utterly intense it all is. I'd never go back and I've been twice.

Excited to see the brothers go to Rishikesh so I can reminisce

cakeorwine · 21/05/2025 21:13

Loved Rishikesh - spent a good few days there. Will definitely go back there.

Cow remarks

“It’s a girl,”

”But it’s got horns”

Made me chuckle.

Ha yes!! Been a few years since I went there. But i clearly remember how much more chilled it felt compared to Agra and . Delhi

That sleeper bus the brothers are on reminds me of the sleeper train scene in Some Like it Hot.

It is overwhelming, big cities with so much to see your eyes feel exhausted trying to take it all in. But exhilarating at the same time. I wish we had gone to places like Rishikesh, but were very much in the triangle, but I am not bold enough to travel independently.

jay55 · 21/05/2025 21:18

I’m exhausted just watching them this week, the over stimulation is crazy.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 21/05/2025 21:19

Seeing the children upset me too. It is really difficult to witness.

NCTDN · 21/05/2025 21:19

I do wish they’d show more like they used to, such as how they manage for food. That doesn’t seem to be an issue at all this time.

cakeorwine · 21/05/2025 21:20

Lucknow was interesting. There was a very different perspective on the Indian Mutiny (or uprising)

Just seen the poverty - yes, it's overwhelming and very visible
