Whoop. S5 starts

Can't wait - love this and seems s6 is on the cards as well

The new four-part series will adapt four stories from Pater James’s books,

Dead If You Don’t

Dead At First Sight

Need You Dead

Find Them Dead.

John Simm will (thankfully!) return as DS Roy Grace, and we’ll see him deal with cases including a missing teenager, a gang of fraudsters running an online dating (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a63082040/dating-apps-dating-culture/)
agency, as well as themes including drugs, trafficking and judicial blackmail.

Based on the best-selling novels by Peter James, the new four-part instalment will see John Simm return as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, the hard-working police officer who’s given his life to job – and let’s just say he’s got a lot on his plate. A personal tragedy - missing persons, a brutal robbery…it’s going to be quite the series.

The Brighton-set series is based on the bestselling novels by Peter James, with the first ever episode airing in March 2021. John Simm starred in the lead role as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, a tenacious detective haunted by the disappearance of his wife some years earlier.

Over the course of four series, he and sidekick Glenn Branson (Richie Campbell) have investigated everything from a missing groom to a vicious robbery and a 30-year-old murder case. It’s safe to say, there’s rarely been a dull moment!

There’s also a lot going on in Roy’s personal life. At the end of series 4, Roy was finally reunited with his long-lost wife, Sandy (Clare Calbraith), and she revealed he had a son named Bruno.

The news came just as Roy was preparing for the arrival of his first child with his new partner Cleo (Zoë Tapper).

In a recent interview, however, John Simm revealed that there’s tragedy in store for the couple.

When we find Cleo and Roy, they are dealing with the loss of a child which has happened between the series," he explained. "So you realise quite quickly what's happened.

They're also trying to deal with Bruno, who's now kind of living with them. They both have to try and bond with Bruno through obviously tragic circumstances, what happened to Sandy, etc in the previous series."

"It’s quite heightened but great to play, you need some dramatic tension. As actors, it's much better to play something like that. It was a lovely challenge, actually."

Zoë Tapper, who plays Cleo, said of the new storyline: "You find out very early on that she's lost the baby, so that's the sort of first image you have of her and of them is dealing with this really devastating loss.

"They were really poignant, moving scenes to film and interesting in another way, because I think for Cleo, her work is so integral to who she is as a person, and she's on bereavement leave at the beginning of this series, and Roy has had to go back to work, so they're separated in their grief as well."

Is there a way of putting a spoiler tag so it covers my answer in case anyone wants to read the books? You can on a football forum im on

Just asked my Dad, who's read them more recently than me, Cassian is bent, but not for doing what he did in the show, and i can't remember what book he's taken down in

Cassian being proved bent comes a lot later in the books and not for being a murderer.

Edited for necessary vagueness.

Watched last night, wish they hadn't left that grim ending, obviously heading for a new series. Would have been nice to have a happy ending for once, perhaps with Chloe discovering she's pregnant. That scene with her carefully placing all the baby things away was so sad.

butterpuffed · 28/04/2025 09:15

I don't mind when an episode ends on a cliff hanger but not a whole series , very annoying .

I didn't quite catch why that policewoman [can't remember her name] had changed her name and pretended she didn't recognise the older police officer ...?

lazymum99 · 28/04/2025 09:33

I think he was suspected of killing an informant or something and was chucked out of the police for gross misconduct. He was a drunk also

lazymum99 · 28/04/2025 09:33

That is her father was the rogue police man

diddl · 28/04/2025 10:29

I've just read the last couple of posts.

Smash & Chloe?😂

I think another series will have done all the books to date?

moto748e · 28/04/2025 11:41

At this point, it’s looking like the clear winner here is Craig Parkinson who likely got out before the ship completely sank.

Blondes' tame reviewer nails it there! And he's not wrong: plot-lines were abandoned, character behaviour made little sense. Shaun Dooley is a terrific actor and always adds a lot, but he was wasted here. When he brought the document into the cell for his wife to sign, I thought it was going to be divorce papers! Is he really going to help her, or will he turn on her? I don't think I'll be watching another series to find out. Roy seems to have become more and more of a dick as the season has continued. Continues to ignore Bruno, and his attitude to Cleo sucks. And I loved that no matter how frantic the situation, there was always time for Glenn to do a bout of life-coaching for Roy. And it's an odd relationship too; on some levels, Roy doesn't appear to fully trust Glenn. What was the point of the two randoms, Richard and Sally, getting shot in the park? Seemed like just padding to me.

diddl · 28/04/2025 11:58

I can' take Shaun Dooley seriously in anything so the thought that he might be some criminal mastermind was just a laughable to me.

I wish they would stick to plots about the murders etc. The whole convoluted Sandy subplot is really being dragged out
I can't actually remember what her "debt" was and why they (who? Can't remember) apparently killed her. Plus I hate plots involving threats to children so I'm not sure if I fancy the next series.

NewAgeNewMe · 28/04/2025 17:27

Yes agreed. So the debt has passed to a child. Whose father is a serving police officer. Seriously? Is this the tv writers or the actual author, I’m not sure I care enough!

diddl · 28/04/2025 17:31

It's all very odd isn't it?

So Sandy owed money so they killed her?

Cassian helped her so that's why he was in debt to them(?)

Will they be trying to get Grace to take Cassian's place rather than pay money?

Does anyone care anymore?

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/04/2025 21:23

Def won’t get the money if she’s dead

so what’s the point of killing her

To frighten someone else into paying up?

Hard to make sense of to me!

FridayNight1975 · 28/04/2025 23:18

am i the only one that’s not sure the boy is Roy’s son?

I mean, wasn’t she sleeping with both before she disappeared? or probably just with Casien, since roy was never around.

wouldn’t it cross your mind if you're an experienced policeman?

also, why they introduce the storyline about the nurse and then we didn’t hear about it again?
